It's easy to win MMO of the year when there is no competition. Btw where is the RPG of the year, Skyrim deserve that award.
The RPG of the Year award is on page 4 of the review, helpfully listed under the title "RPG of the Year". I'll give you three guesses as to which game won it . . .
But I think - even without having played it! - that SW:TOR is very likely a deserving recipient of MMO of the Year award. A thousand forum trolls complaining about everything they can find to complain about can't be wrong, it must mean it's a game worth playing if the trolls are out in legions trying to explain why nobody would want to play it.

I think rift should get it even though i didnt like the game.Trion have done a really great jobs with updates and had a great release, even better than swtor. They didn't use the staggered release trick to make it look like a smooth release,if i was Trion i would put it down to bioware living on there rep.Look how the same website reviewed DA2 and we all know what that game was like.
50% chance to become MMO of the year?... nice odds
Feel a bit sorry for RIFT... brought a few nice ideas to the MMO table...
Depends on whether it is for newly released games or all MMOs. I think they just go by released in the calendar year which by my math would give it a 33.333333.....% chance. DCUO released in Jan. Any other releases this year?
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
umm no it says mmo of the year, that's a big difference.
skyrim is game of the year no matter what any site says about anything lol
Actually, if you look REALLY close at the article, you will see a box that says 'Game of the Year : 2011 : MMO' just like the one above it which says 'Game of the Year : 2011 : Action' So technically it does in fact say GAME OF THE YEAR. Just saying.......... Oh and even though I might agree Skyrim is an excellent game, this site did not pick it as the GAME OF THE YEAR : 2011 : MMO, it picked it as GAME OF THE YEAR : 2011 : RPG. Again, just saying...... :O

To even consider SWTOR for any kind of award is irresponsable journalism in my opinion. Now hear me out before you start flaming.
MMOs by their nature do not hit any kind of real hint of the kind of game they are until they have been out about 6 months. MMOs need a bit of time to grow and give the players a feel for the direction and style the producer will give in the long term. With that in mind to find an MMO of the year you need to seriously look at games that have at least 6 months under their belt to make a respectable case for it having the honor.

This type of logic has no place in mmo review sites.

This is just completely false.
You can get a pretty good hint about an MMO within the first hour of play. After 20 hours, you have a good idea about how the rest of the game will play. If, after a month or two, you are still keen, there's a good chance that you are in it for the long haul. You've likely already had a taste of the end game, so you've basically seen everything. After six months, you've already decided if you are a lifer. If you aren't, you're probably already playing something else.
The only way I can see your statement being true is for someone who only plays an hour a night. Most of us will have played an MMO to death in half a year, so we already know *exactly* how the game plays, likely from the perspective of a couple of different capped characters, and if it appeals to us. If you don't, you're (not *you* specifically) either hopelessly obtuse or painfully indecisive.
I will concede though, that MMOs need to be reviewed twice, once shortly after release and once six months to a year later, after it's been seasoned a little.
The preliminary review should give us an idea what to expect from the game and how it plays, but most importantly, it should tell us about the weaknesses, primarily as a result of release-related problems. They should review the state of the game AT THE POINT OF RELEASE and NOT speculate on what it might be later.
The second review should occur after the growing pains have passed, when hopefully, the release jitters will be gone. It should go into greater detail about the mechanics and then, speculate about where the game might go from there. We should also be given a good idea of how the developer has addressed the initial problems and what we can expect from them in the future.
Giving MMOs a pass shortly after release because they have this mysterious thing called "potential", is stupid. Judge it on it's release state, which is what players are going to be paying for initially. Later, judge it again on it's current state, which is what players are still paying for.

I agree.
SWTOR should have been in the consideration for 2012, not 2011. Eleven days (20th - 31st) is hardly enough to do a comprehensive review of an MMORPG.
ROFL!!! Man , I'm gonna die laughing one of these days , this is just as funny as when people say that *Input any MMO* would be the next WoW or WoW killer. :P
Just because something won't die doesn't mean it's not killed. That's the lesson I've learned from mmos. EQ was dead on it's feet for years, still is. It's dead yet it lives on. Many mmos do. It's players are zombies living in a bygone era.
Players that won't leave even the most dated, tired, stale, boring mmo until the lights are actually shut off don't really count.
Could someone please link any post from these forums that actually said SWTOR was going to be a wow killer? Bonus points if you quote someone who actually had more than a couple dozen posts here. Otherwise it's just Fox News.
The game is really a multiplayer version of the Kotor games. And im not using that as a negative but explaining that few things were changed from those original games. Hell, some of the annoying things from the KOTOR games are seen in TOR. That's how little this stuff was changed.
In reality they had 11 days, which isn't fair to rift, what's funny is just like hypocrisy, you switch the release date and I'd bet money on Rift winning within 11 days.
SWTOR should be going for MMO of the year in 2012 for a [real] plus.
Nonetheless though I'll congratulate them for winning the award in other places.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.

Couple points.
1) SW:TOR is what is called an MMORPG, not an MMO. There is that thing called RPG in that title there...you know the one thing 95% of you on these forums forgot about 3 years ago when you got stuck on the WoW 'game mechanics' train and never looked back. This web site, these forums are to discuss MMORPGs, wouldnt' it be nice if people started to call them what the hell they are for once? Even GameSpy missed it, the biggest point about SW:TOR, the one thing which sets it apart from Rift and all the others this year, its the story, the Role Playing Game in it. And yet they give it the award for the best Massively Multiplayer Onling Game. Farmville is an MMO. (and yeah I know this is a nitpicky gripe on my part, but hey, someone has to make it a point) MMOG, MMORTS, MMORPG ... ok let me just link it already...
2) IF a game that was released in the year 2011 just happens to be BETTER than any other game that was released in the same year in said category, why shouldnt it be given the award in that category? Does it matter if it become the best in one week when all the others didnt even come into the same bracket until they had been out for 6 months already?
Just because it hasn't been out for 6 months doesn't mean it has to be to win. If the rest suck so bad they dont even compare.....well then just give it to the only one left that can stand up there on the pedistal.
Now all that being said, I am agreeing with you that time does need to be given to provide valid reviews on any product, no matter its media. But you have to take into concideration the impact the product has too. A car that looks great, drives great, is built very well, gets great gas milage, and a respectable price should be taken for what it is. Just because it hit the market 1 month ago does not mean it cann't be seen for being superior over all those that came before it. If it is, then it is. In the case of Gamespy and SW:TOR they said it in their article itself "our staff was sucked into SWTOR by its well-written storylines" and "we've become fully immersed in SWTOR unlike any MMO before it". If those statements are true, then that says it all in my opinion on why they gave it the award. The impact.
