It's easy to win MMO of the year when there is no competition. Btw where is the RPG of the year, Skyrim deserve that award.
This.
Also Gamespy has been the Rolling Stone of game reviewers for close to a decade now. That is, they reserve their highest praise for those that make the most money. Between that and the fact that there weren't any other real attempts at a high quality title released this year, it wasn't difficult to guess who they would award.
-with such little emphasis on the MM aspect due to heavy instancing
-that by it's main concepts rather is a singleplayer-game
and got released like 10 days before 2012 can steal the award from Rift, that is lightyears ahead in features and in which Trion put like solid 8 months of work since release.
Don't get me wrong, i'm neither a hater of SWTOR nor a fanboy of Rift. But this is just not right and it stinks.
So, to all who looked at the game and questioned where the millions went: Such "awards" obviously show where the money goes.
What is the meaning of calling TOR game of the year ? Can we get a reduction of prices now ? It all adds to the prestige of the name. Even if I am convinced these gratuitous glorification are not bought by money. How could we believe this is something to consider when playing, buying or appreciating the game
Is it possible to give a true-hearted assessment without extremes ? We all know perfections does not exist in this real world. And for and against have their own fans, in the same extremes as the unrealistic stories we want to believe in.
Rather weird I find the idea that BioWare had already achievements and awards even before they launched ! I don't know about the average reader of the forums which display such messages, but to me this sounds suspecious. Very suspecious indeed.

This industry always has that happen. It isn't specific to BW. Shows you how much credence one should give those publications. Never have put much stock in them. They're rather worthless and have always been prone to being part of the flavor of the month brigade and the band wagon effect.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
It managed to keep players longer than anyone would've guessed. And was bound to end up abandoned not only because SW:TOR was dated to launch at the end of the year but because they didn't manage to upkeep the game and their FOTM-rotation was too overboard.
Trion is a new kid on the block (established on 2006). Who would've thought that under 5 years old company manages to create a MMO world and lore from thin air and execute such flawless launch they did with huge launch day population. Not me.
I'm sure Rift will get back their portion of players in 2-3Mo to keep it running as big as normal MMOs do.
To even consider SWTOR for any kind of award is irresponsable journalism in my opinion. Now hear me out before you start flaming.
MMOs by their nature do not hit any kind of real hint of the kind of game they are until they have been out about 6 months. MMOs need a bit of time to grow and give the players a feel for the direction and style the producer will give in the long term. With that in mind to find an MMO of the year you need to seriously look at games that have at least 6 months under their belt to make a respectable case for it having the honor.
I agree.
SWTOR should have been in the consideration for 2012, not 2011. Eleven days (20th - 31st) is hardly enough to do a comprehensive review of an MMORPG.
This would complete sense, if SWTOR had been released in 2012.

Rift's main problem was the infinite grind of the minimal options at level cap. Had it had anything at cap that wasn't exactly the same as you did leveling up, me, and most of my friends playing it, might have actually stayed longer than we did. Simply giving me a better reward for doing the same instance for the 53rd time does not make it a different instance.

I loved the Witcher 2 and Skyrim equally. Its hard to choose between the two. Was a great year for RPGs, thats for sure.

I don't see how a game
-missing tons of basic mmorpg features
-with such little emphasis on the MM aspect due to heavy instancing
-that by it's main concepts rather is a singleplayer-game
and got released like 10 days before 2012 can steal the award from Rift, that is lightyears ahead in features and in which Trion put like solid 8 months of work since release.
