No, you need to understand that not everyone wants fundamental gameplay changes. You need to understand that people enjoy playing the tried and true formula. Innovation isn't the end all be all. To some people, what matters most is the fun factor, and if a game can deliver that, then there's no need for change. Of course, not everyone feels the same way. People desire different things, it's natural. I'm sure there are those playing this game to simply kill time while they wait for "the next big thing". This happens with virtually everything, and it's no surprise that some feel that way regarding TOR.
It's a time killer till GW2 and/or TSW. SWTOR just confirms that I'm pretty sick of the standard themepark MMO design. Good game, intrersting, and overall a great CoOp game, I still feel that it largely missed the "Massively" mark in MMO. I simpely don't agree with the companions and small party sizes. It just stinks of ME all over (never played KotOR) to me though and think it's more of a single player game with some multiplayer options than an actual MMO. Have a rising suspicon/conspiracy that SWTOR will be a testing grounds to pave the way for a ME MMO in the aftermath of ME3 which I think is a hell of a lot more intresting setting with races, lore, characteristics, ect ect than SWTOR.
Looking foward to see if GW2 can bring back the actual "Massively Multiplayer" in MMO.
Spin it any way you want, pal. It's a great game. It's a fun game. And it's a popular game.
I didn't "settle" on anything, and the people that are playing the game LOVE the game. I know that's gotta bother you something fierce, but you're just going to have to deal with it.
It's a mediocore game. It's a boring game. And it's a flavor of the month game.
You did ''settle'' but don't want to admit that you did. It's fine to love the game but not everyone does and I am sure the majority wants something more then a basic WoW clone with voice overs and you're going to have to deal with it when they leave the game.
Did you settle on bitching cause TOR wasnt a sandbox/GW2/whatever?
I am having a great time. I figure if I get a dollar an hr of enjoyment out of a game, then I didnt get ripped off. I gotta be getting close to 60 hrs in now(probably more like mid 40s, but would of been there if server wasnt always full....anywho). I will easily top 60 hrs this first month, and a heck of a lot more than the 15 each month to sustain it.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
I was mainly waiting for D3 or GW2 to release. I tried the last open beta weekend, enjoyed it and decided to preorder at the last minute. SW:TOR gives me the best leveling experience I've ever had. I'm 50 now and am collecting the datacrons.
I'm 100% burned out on the MMO end game gear grind and so I probably won't be subscribing right away. I wouldn't mind leveling alts, but I have an issue paying a susbcription just to do that as I could get a similar experience from a single player game. I'm praying they do something really special with multiplayer space combat.
I think BW has the option to take the game in a different direction than WOW, ie. no arena BS and a non elitist based end game. They can't beat WOW at what it does best, it needs to differentiate itself a bit.
Yep, I even beta tested the game and didn't like it all that much because of the eerie comparisons to WoW. But, I've been sitting here gameless for quite some time. Even had Skyrim going for a while and even though that was great, it's over. I can't play Skyrim again till I get some new content.
Long story short, I caved. I got the fricken game. I really hate myself for it. I can think of a very similar comparison for how I feel about it right now, but it'd probably get me banned. Anyway, I have it downloading and I'll enjoy it for a little while, while I wait for something actually good to play.
I knew it wasn't going to be the greatest MMO of all time, replete with new features and gameplay that seems as fresh as the first wave of MMOs, so I guess you could say I "settled". Thing is, it's turned out to be loads more fun that I thought it would.
The other thing is that after being all angsty for a few years about the state of MMOs today, I realised a while ago that if the awesome, compelling, innovative and sandboxy MMO that I'd been dreaming about actually did come out, I wouldn't have the time to play it anyway nowadays. So I'm happy with my TORs and COs, they fill the time I've got to play in a fun, casual way.
That said, I've been caning TOR pretty hard over the holiday season. I hope the new MMO shine wears off a bit by the end of the weekend or I'll end up playing it more than I really should once everything else gets going again.
The overwhelming consensus revolving around SWTOR is that everyone "knew" what SWTOR WASN'T going to be. Essentially, we all apparently "knew" going into SWTOR that it wasn't anything innovative, the same-old-same-old, WoW-Copy & that the devs made this VERY clear far FAR FAR before launch. So, I shrugged my arms after reading NUMEROUS previews, player reviews, and overall "ZOMG" threads. Unfortunately, I've gained enough experience over the years in terms of MMOs to know what I'd be getting into should I had gone ahead and bought SWTOR. So, I didn't get the game obviously.
HOWEVER, a couples weeks have passed since SWTOR came out (pre-release, or release....it's all the same..don't try to color it differently), and now I'm seeing a tune of a different color? I guess the hype died down enough that we're starting to see people agree on certain points that are making them disgruntled with SWTOR?
So my REAL question, and the entire purpose of this thread, is the following:
"Did you settle for something second best because you're bored with the current state of MMOs in general, and you wanted something new & since it was 'Star Wars' you hopped right on it?"
Yea, I get the grammatical errors thoughout that question. However, I wasn't willing to split it into two sentences for w/e reason :P?
Thoughts?
Do you read MMO/gaming forums?
Do you think that MMO/gaming forums are populated by the majority of MMO gamers?
Do you think because many MMO gamers on forums are negative that that is the general concensus of the majority of MMO gamers?
If you answer yes to these questions then your whole premiss is flawed and therefore your conclusion is flawed. MMO/gaming forums are a very small sample of the gaming world and I mean less than 2% of the MMO gaming community. The only way to judge the success or failure of an MMO is to wait and see. If the game is churning out content and has hundreds of servers at medium to high at peak after six months big success, if it pushes out content and has less than a hundred server at medium to high at peak good success, if in six months its closing servers but pushes out content to a handful of servers then its surviving, if in a year it has 6 servers down from over a hundred then a failure. Though these are generalisations you get my point. But speculation is fun for some so knock yourself out and we'll see if you are right and if you are tell me my lottery numbers in 6 months OK?
My persoanl thoughts are that Bioware have produced a immersive, engaging game with planty of content to keep the average MMO gamer happy for many months unlike all the MMO's from the past 7 years except you know who, whether bthis can be sustained in years is anyones guess and is up to Bioware to churn out the updates but my feelings are they will and SW:TOR will be the first proper MMO success since WoW. So to me your "overwhelming concensus" view is not really overwhelming or a concensus yet as millions are playing the game every day and I don't see on my server very much complaining or dissing just happiness and fun. Its only on forums I'm seeing this amount of negativity funnily thats the same when i was playing WoW many years ago go figure, but of course my RP server is an "exception" to the rule as its full of endorphin crazed roleplaying fanboys and fangirls

"Did you create this thread because you're bored and dont like SWTOR and never have, and just want to create negativity?"
So far, SWTOR has exceeded all my expectations. The gameplay is great, the story is amazing, and I am actually grouping with people a lot and playing more multiplayer content than I usually do (I am mostly a solo player) due to the Heroic 2+ and Heroic 4+ missions, and flashpoints. Oh and they flashpoints are awesome fun too.
The game is keeping me engaged in a way that no other MMO has done for a very long time - each time I start to get slightly tired with something, something new and cool is introduced to keep my interest. As long as they keep the content coming, I see myself playing this for a very long time.
Yes, there are a few bugs, and a few game systems that could do with improving, but this is the same for all MMO's.

Stopped for "settling" for "second bests" or "lesser evils", etc - I've done it for last few years - mmo wise and I got tired of it.
I don't play mmropg's that don't fit my "mmorpg cravings" anymore.
I am not playing any mmropg atm cause of that.
For last few years I was like "well there is no mmorpg of the kind I would like, so I will just choose best from those that are avabile even thought I am not really a fun of their design (running instances for tokens, instanced pvp, LFG tools, queuing, auto-teleportations, lack of emphasis on social aspect, interdependancy, etc - you get the image what I dislike).
I even had fun for a while I admit, but ultimatelly I realized that those games don't have features that made me play mmropg's in first place (basically games that are creating vibrant, living worlds, with societies and itnerdependancies, real player made economies, etc) so I've stoped. Could not stand "wait in queue for instance" kind of gameplay anymore.
So I am not settling for "second's best" or "lesser evils" anymore. I prefer to NOT play any mmo than to play and support games that carbon copy current WoW-like model.
That's why I decided not to play Swtor after I tried it in beta.
I am only playing SWTOR cause I hate what Turbine did with Lotro. The ROI expansion was the most unfun MMO experiance I have had (and I love LOtro). So that got me looking around at other games that is when I started Swtor. I am really enjoying myself. For the first time I am taking it slow while leveling. I am not looking forward to endgame cause it is the same hamster wheel that Lotro and WoW have become. I hope by the time I get to 50 there will be something else to keep me busy other than doing the same instances I was doing while leveling.
Also I hear alot of people say it is a WoW clone, but you talk to people playing, almost all the complaints are that it isn't like WoW enough, lol. In all honesty it is much more like Lotro Shadows of Angmar- Tons of group quests, similar crafting, story driven. Non tanks don't get kill in 3 shots (always drove me nuts about WoW, if the tank lost agro for 3 seconds it could be a wipe).
Of course it is a thempark all the way and for most people that means it is a Wow clone along with AoC, Rift, Aion, EQ2, Lotro
I agree I definitely feel its based more on the LotRO mold than WoW it just reminds so much of LotRO for the things you mention.

I settled for this (for now) because it is a great game and I am having loads of fun.
You know, if there was a first best and this was second best to that then I would play both because this second best is pretty damn good and so that first best wouldn't be first enough to stop me playing such a good second. Please tell me what that first best is so that I can actually make a comparative judgment.
I am playing with some people that I played SWG with, that I havent played anything else with since then.
It is what I thought it would be so far, its not really my thing. I like some of the ideas, but like anytime something is newer, the new ideas are screwed up, for the most part.
I am looking forward to TSW/GW2 in the near term.
I will get my money out of swtor, but I cant see it as a long term game atm, it plays kind of like a RPG that you can invite a few friends to play with you for the most part. It also is very railed, to its detriment, atleast as far as I have seen, its very hard to sync up and quest/play with other people. I am like 33-34, so I mean I have been waiting for it to 'open up', like I was told, but I haven't seen it yet.
I won't sit around killing the game though, as I said, its what I thought it was.
No settling here. SWTOR is the best MMO on the market, and it s just getting started. GW2 looks decent, but I m not getting too excited over it yet. This website is one of the, if not the worst place to find out info on games. I just see in game and how people love the game. To each their own, but I think it s one quality MMO.
Swtor will be fun for some people for the first month or two but after that the numbers will start to drop.the game doesn't offer enough to keep players playing longterm. its just another themepark raiding mmo with some pvp tacked on.been there done that too many times.
I don't accept the premise of the question. I didn't "settle" for second best by enjoying TOR. What is with some of you people anyway? Is it really hard to grasp that people are enjoying this?
Yeah, agreed. WTF is it with some people on these boards just not wanting to accept that there are people who think TOR is fun? Not everyone needs the second coming of Sandbox Nirvana to be happy.
I stopped playing MMOs when I started graduate school back in August 2010 because I knew I wouldn't have time for them. It was either my MBA or an MMO. Now that my degree is in sight (May 2012 -- woo!) I'm gaming again. If TOR wasn't fun, and if I didn't enjoy it, I would have quit playing it back during the beta when all it would have cost me is time. Instead, I pre-ordered and bought the game, and I'm enjoying it. My friends and guildmates are playing and we were up late last night running heroics and having fun.
Why is that such a problem for people? Why do they have to act like TOR is "settling" for something? For some of us, it's a legitimately fun game. We enjoy it. Is that really such a sin?
I wasn't expecting much as far as an mmo, nor do I from any new launch since 2005. I bought it for the story and have been pleased with my purchase. I was never a Star Wars fan and I can't recal having watched one of the movies all the way through, but I'm enjoying it anyway. In the end that is all that matters to me. I don't care if it is an rpg, strat, fps, or mmorpg, as long as I am having fun and feel it was worth the money I spent, I am happy.
**An unfortunate side note. My fiance and I both dumped our money into the CE of the new EQ2 expansion, played it for a week and quit. That wasn't a purchase I ended up being happy with. SWToR at least helped keep my mind off of the money wasted, until now.
I don't accept the premise of the question. I didn't "settle" for second best by enjoying TOR. What is with some of you people anyway? Is it really hard to grasp that people are enjoying this?
I would say that the question is obviously not targeted at you, or people that feel TOR is the best Mmorpg out there.
I was pretty sure "KOTOR 3 with multiplayer" would be worth my 50 bucks.
And technical issues (and oh are there a-plenty, game is performing horrible and can't be adjusted, see official tech boards for reference) aside, I knew full well that PvP would be a mediocre sidekick and PvE a rails on rails game with no sandbox-elements in it whatsoever.
But you know, it's a nice filler...
Will it succeed, most definitely, Star Wars after all, will claim the "bestestest game evar created"-award, probably not.
And in fact, from what I hear atm, there are lots of people ingame bridging to XY, be it SW or GW2.
