And no, I'm not talking about that bastard child tactical-FPS X-COM game that 2K is making.
Firaxis Games, responsible for development of the Civ series of games and other Sid Meier games, has announced development of a tactical turn-based strategy title which will be called "XCOM: Enemy Unknown".

Nice... It's about time someone continued or rebooted this franchise. I was rather disappointed when I found out 2K was making some FPS out of this IP. Good to see someone is remaking it and being true to the source that is a classic game that was never really duplicated. Hopefully being 'Multi-platform' doesn't make them do a half-assed PC port however. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this one.

*wonders what year this is*
*cringes at how the X-Com IP will be raped and mangled this time*
Well I trust these guys a heck of a lot more than 2K as Firaxis Games is made up of mostly ex-Microprose developers... You know the guys who made the original X-Com? If anyone can do a proper reboot of the franchise it's Firaxis Games.

Agreed, Microproose was the best game company ever. Takes me back to my C-64 days and great games like Pirates!
That's my hope as well, though I am worried about the whole 'console port' issue.
On a side note, the X-com complete bundle is on sale for $5 on steam today as well.
I remember when the original came out, I think it was early summer 1988. I'd just finished my first year at university and was home. My mum nad Dad were off on vacation and I'd got up early to take them to the airport, 6am or some god awful time like that, and called in at the local game store on the way home by game store I think it was a shelf in the local computer store) and saw UFO:Enemy Unknown. Got home loaded it up and started playing, a short time later I got hungry and looked at the time and realised I'd been playing for about 6 hours so I grabbed a sandwich and went back to it...
The next week followed the same pattern, it's definitely one of my all time favourite games. Pity the sequel wasn't as good, the under sea one - can't remember the titile. The third onewas pretty good - gain the title escapes me - but I didn't like the ones after that.
EDIT: Terro from the Deep and Apocalypse are the titles.
Hopefully this is a trend with them... A rebooted Master of Orion would be great also.

Really quite surprised and excited about this development.
Finally. A real X-COM... Thats a relief. In an odd way.
Firaxis Games already has a website up for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Check it out and don't forget to bookmark!

I cross my fingers and hope this product delivers. I loved the original game.
I had a heart attack when I read about this wonderful bit of news. A bonafide X-Com strategy game. Not some FPS bastard child who's only relation to the franchise is the name. Better yet, an X-Com strategy game made by a company built because of strategy (first being Alpha Centauri) and has further built on that reputation with more strategy games.
The first ray of light in the franchise since the late 90s.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
Sounds great. Hopefully Firaxis can pull this off without screwing with what made the original X-com so great.
UFO: Extraterrestrials Gold actually accomplished that feat for me. I found many hours of enjoyment in that game as it kept the spirit of X-com while adding a few new things to the table. Hopefully this new X-com can do the same.
I used to be a fan of the old one
Great news and thanks for the link!
