ranger melee.

i dont know how to bring this up so i just will.  if some of you played the white lion class in warhammer you will know exactly what im talking about. im hoping pretty much that the pet abilities that you use as a ranger in melee can trigger combo's for you and your pet to use with decent synergy.  if anyone has played the live demo can you confirm/deny this?

thanks again,

cake.

Sounds just like Brutal Pounce, but it actually works when you want it to.

And yeah OP, I played a WL up to RR78 (before the RR cap increase) and absolutely loved the class. I played Loner spec for most of my career but once I hit RR60, I went full Guardian and never looked back. Hoping, like you, that the Ranger is capable of close to the same play-style.

Basicly the Ranger have been reworked since autumm, especial his pets. wich you can read about here http://www.arena.net/blog/guild-wars-2-development-update-by-jon-peters

but besides that i don't think that we have a real picture of the state of the ranger atm. But i think i read something somewhere that ArenaNet esactly was working on getting more synergy in between the pet and the ranger.

WL  was one of those classes i didnt know what to expect, and was the first pet class i actually liked. all other games pet's just felt like a chore.

Melee with a Pet worked great in the first Guildwars unless you failed at the game in general.  And even then, there was some hammer & dagger Gimmicks being run in PvP that steamrolled faces just by rolling your own face over the keyboard.  Rangers have always been viable in Melee and in a few cases involving max Expertise, they were actually overpowered and had to be nerfed a lot.

You can already see hints of this happening again in bits of Great-Sword videos when the demo tester isn't fully retarded.

My first and main char in guild wars was an axe ranger/warrior build that was structured around RAO with a few pet disables tossed in there, The synergy was there for sure as far as your pet goes...cant wait to see what i can do in GW2 with the same Ranger/War combo.

Been looking at the Ranger (since it was my GW1 main) to play for GW2, and honestly don't see them having the ability to go toe to toe with the other melee classes like a warrior or Guardian with melee only.

I could be wrong, but without their bows, they forfiet so many advantages it baffles me how they will be able to balance them both ways without making them overpowered or completely outclassed.

This better not be the case image

My ranger/war had alot of versatility but by no means was he op....if GW had bigger pvp scenarios like 20v20...hed be cannon fodder, but even with the standard 5v5 hes still a glass cannon. The synergy between the ranger and the pet is what made the combo viable and they better not have compromised that to encourage bow builds cause its pretty much the only class that appeals to me.

Edit: well this makes me happy... http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Winter%27s_Bite

Seems to be alot of Bleed overkill between both the ranger weapon abilities and pet abilities but we will just have 2 wait and see.

That's the key here, synergy. It's the only way they can do one without effecting the other. To make melee a viable alternative to a melee / bow ranger, synergy will have to be increased for the melee ranger, without enhancing the ranged part by much.

It's not impossible, but right now the warrior and Gaurdian just have way to many things to throw at them. And have you seen what a thief can do...OMG.

  • illeriller Member UncommonPosts: 518

Izzy came out and admitted that they're trying to make Ranger the range king b/c you can't have Rifle Warriors and Staff Guardians showing them up in that specialty.  But you have to think of that in terms of the situation.  Some maps favor CQC so that kind of Sniping based minmaxing won't be viable and they'll definitely need a fall back option that will be determined by Traits that will probably directly contradict the Range-King build.  So no, they won't be able to just run both builds at the same time and be totally overpowered at both Ranges just by weapon swapping.

i dunno...there seems to be a good deal of synergy as of this moment...not nearly as much as gw1 but at the same time the ranger class itself now has melee specializations built right in.

Bottom line is 2/3 of all weapon skills....are melee, and that isnt counting the pet attacks.

I just cant see them putting in 30 melee weapon skills for the ranger just for fluff,i also cant see them making rangers so 1 dimensional....just cant see it.it may taake some time for them to get melee rangers down to a point where there viable but thats cool with me.

Edit: didnt see the "Not" in "Not Impossible" so erased the edit ..my bad image

just look at that. HTey have 2Handed sword, sword, and axe combos.

They need to get two good players at Anet (Izzy and Karl perhaps) to do a 1v1 between a melee ranger and a thief.

That would be one hell of a fight to push PVP with any doubters.

My only concern is the Ranger class needs some TLC not to get screwed up by Anet. The original demo they seemed like they were an afterthought. Getting the ranger to be a quality melee class and yet still be a quality ranged class would only make it lethal as a hybrid. Like I said, synergy for melee only with the pet could do this, but then bows would have to be negated somewhat. Maybe worried over nothing, but this is my personal favorite class and would hate to see them get overlooked.

I just hope that as a ranger i still options on how i choose to play him, viable ones...

I really hope it isnt a 1 spec viable melee option....the thing i loved most about GW1 was the fact that you could see tons of viable specs ranging from different class combos.

I hope they dont pigeon hole me image

Mesmers were an afterthought in PvE too, then look what happened to them after Post-Release development...  It's because the best way to make a Class get noticed, is to first establish a meta, then make that class rape the meta.  We're now seeing that go in reverse as people are going back to Shitterflames and Starburst b/c Mistrust ignored too much armor.

Also if someone's gonna do a 1 on 1 as the Ranger, it better be Jon Peters.

im not really talking about success as much as gameplay style. what i was mostly hoping for like people pointed out was synergy with the pet. not the pet just auto attackins.
