Trion's Success

NephaeriusNephaerius Member UncommonPosts: 1,671

So after the flood of negativity in the server merge thread I just wanted to point out a Massively article today that indicates Trion has made $100 million in revenue over the last 10 months and has secured another $85 million in funding to open up Rift to the Asian market.  Oh and of course they're still considering having an IPO.

Sounds like those server merges really spell the end of Rift and Trion, huh?

Using these numbers and math, can anybody figure out how many subs the game has?

Well $100 million over 10 months = $10 million per month.  Divide $10 million by roughly $15 for the average sub.  That equals 666,666 subs.  Kind of a scary number with all those 6's.

IMO number of subs is irrelevant as long as things remain financially profitable and there's enough players to enjoy the game.

    Well, its 10m per month.

Its dificult to know the player base with this numbers because this money dont come only from subs. Other think we cant forget is alot of ppl sub for 1 year to get the rewards.

    10m/13 = 769k, so maybe around 400-600k players this last 10months?

Anyway, gratz Trion for that. The game is not for me but seams they are doing a good job  image

Edit: Nepha was faster then me  :)

Saying it was subs that generated that amount is not exactly correct.  You also have to take into account how much of that is from sales of the game and other money they made on other things.   So I do not think they have 650K+ subs.  That is not to say they don't have somewhere in the neighborhood of 300k-400k subs, but even then I think that is generous.   It is good though that Trion is starting to get its feet.   Let's hope they continue down the road of success and make Rift even a better game.

I'm glad to see that Trion is doing well. They seem to be one of the hardest working studios in the mmo genre and clearly have their players best interest in mind.

you have to figure in box sales.   650k the first month at 40 per box, plus 10 for the CE.  Not everyone bought the CE, but Im sure most people that bought the CE bought the second CE for another 10, so well just leave it at 50.

    650k x 50 for the first month  = 32,500,000

by july or august they had sold over 1 million boxes and well estimate low and say probably another 150k have tried it since, so thats another 500k box sales.  These were *not* at full price, between promotions and such we can estimate 30 per (probably a low estimate given two CE upgrades)  eeping in mind that the cheap options did *not* come with a free month so the cheapest box actually sold was $20

    500kx30 = 15,000,000

so that leaves 52,500,000 (generously) in sub revenue over 9 months (first month is being factored into the box price) means 5,833,333 revenue per month. divide that by 13.50 per month and you get roughly 430k subs per month, which was obviously higher at start and lower later on.

However I am probably lowballing both the number of boxes past the first month and the cost per (not everyone did the promo deals and paid the full 40), but probably wouldnt go much lower than 400k per month.

I completely forgot about the people that are paid in advance....so my final conclusion is that its pretty impossible to tell.

For what its worth, Age of Conan had around 100 in million revenue its first year (source Funcoms financial report that projects TSW at 100 million if it performs like Conan did)

Keep in mind AoC merged down to 6 NA  and 6 Euro servers 7 months after release.  Eventually dropping down to 4 servers a little over a year after release.   Rift is a few weeks from its one year anniversary and still has 40 very full servers. AoC sold a lot of boxes but it was basically a ghost town after the first month.  Plus Rift has shown mild growth in subs the last 60 days.  Rift has retained a very healthy and loyal subscriber base.  The difference here is Rift was a game made for the long run not for box sales.  Trion continues to invest in the game and hire people.  While AoC was all about box sales not long term content or subs.  This is what Hartsman did at EQ2.  Rescuing EQ2 from a bad launch and rebuilding the sub base by continuing to add new content.

    It isn't an article, it's in Funcom's Q3 2011 presentation, on page 15.

    http://www.newsweb.no/newsweb/attachment.do?name=Funcom_Q3_2011_presentation.pdf&attId=93917

It's noteworthy that the 100MUSD AoC scenario described is with slightly better retention ratio than AoC, so AoC probably had something between 80-90MUSD in revenue the first year.

Also, the target scenario is for 157MUSD for TSW.

This is just proof of something everybody should already know, that the opinion of these forums rarely reflects the majority of gamers.

The majority of mmorpg gamers are actually playing the game they love rather than hanging out here waiting or complaining about a certain game.

I'm happy Trion has found success in its first year, and SWTOR for having a great launch in terms of numbers and sales. 2012 looks positive, the balance in the market is shifting slowly out of WoWs favour and is being divided amongst other games which is great, healthy competition is what this genre needs to evolve.

? I have no idea what the player retention was for AoC the first year although I think it's a little higher than some people expect, but I'm kind of sceptical about the mild growth in subs for Rift the past 60 days as well as the 40 'very full servers', I think it's more like kind of a mild decrease compared with 60 days ago.

As for AoC, seeing how they've added a lot of drastic changes and content updates even outside of the expansion, up till now even the House of Crom update and a crafting revamp, I seriously doubt that AoC wasn't about long term content and subs to the intention of the FC people. Also, after 1-1.5 year after launch the number of AoC servers afaik were 8 US servers and about 16 EU servers (English, German, French, etc)

Couldn't agree more. And that balance will be divided even more with the other MMORPG's that will arrive this year. Which is good, to have various very different MMO's sharing the top spotlight, instead of just 1 towering monolithically over all others.

better late old news then never i guess, this aside op,this is a very good move for trion going asia will get then 3 million player easy cause the game is actually good ,i sure hope they do like ff serie and use a world server instead of regional server a la wow

cause this would bring up player base everywhere by a lot the main hurdle right now is not enough player ,remove this and you got a very good game way better then swtor ( i am currently playing)

  • smh_alotsmh_alot Member Posts: 976
I wouldn't bet on those 3 million players if I were you, especially with a number of strong very Asian oriented MMO's that will be there in 2012-2013. But you can always hope ofc, I see people fall into such extremes of unchecked hope or deep hatred/dislike regarding games all the time on these forums :-)

Nevertheless, 100 million dollars revenues and 86 million dollars extra funds will give them enough room to invest in Rift and their other upcoming MMO projects, which look quite interesting.

That is great news. Of course you need to subract development and runnings costs but the game is successful since it is on plus. Of course can that Asian thing go very wrong ($85 mil is a lot of money and more than they paid to make the game) but so far so good.

It at least have proven that modern P2P MMOs still can make money and that is great news for all devs that try to get funding for another project, and of course for anyone working at Trion.
