Went through the tutorial (which, by the way, once you get through, you can only do about 3/4 of the things it teaches you).
Picked one of the Freedom servers.
Appeared in the middle of a village/town/settlement.
Inquired as to where a good place to settle may be found. 'Anywhere but here.' Okay.
Wandered northeast, using handy compass, so that when I was killed I would know where I was. Got killed. Respawned, no longer had a compass. Awesome.
Wandered random direction, as the last time was about 90 minutes of wandering. This time after about 20 minutes slid down a well disguised hill directly into a mine with a locked gate. Could not be removed from mine. /stuck did nothing. No GM would answer/was available. /suicide.
Wandered in another random direction. After about 20 more minutes, eaten by mountain lion.
Gave up for the day.
Today...wandered in another direction. Found clay...found water, found a nice hill with iron in it...and trees. Excellent. Started actually doing things. Made sure no one owned anything near me. No one did. Chopping down a tree to fuel fire to melt iron ore in. Things are going swimmingly. Person comes online and starts screaming that I am murdering the trees he's saving for later. Me = confused, as there is no settlement or anything within visible limits. Random person goes on and on. I produce a log. Random person picks it up. Me = unhappy. Random person follows me around, while bellowing on global channel that I am stealing his resources.
Me = give up. Hours and hours of searching just to find a place to level your skills and the 'amazing' community aren't worth the trouble.

wurm would be a fairly good game if it would actually have animations. You're basically a sliding block.
Has to be one of the worst communitys ever :-3
EvE doors
See the best doors on EvE-on!
This is why I am veering more and more towards single player games... People can be the best thing about these games, but they are often the worst.
Internet folk are getting too much hard work for me to deal with in my gaming time TBH.
Thanks for sharing. I've never played Wurm. The game sounds great to me. I love wandering and exploring. But bad community can ruin anything. If there is no mechanic for "reserving" resources then the tree did not belong to him. Maybe the community has some uncoded rules of ediquette but it sounds like you did everything appropriate before chopping. Did anyone else in global chat support his assertion that what you did was innappropriate?
No one in global responded to him at all, and I never said a word in the chat myself.
I realize it's supposed to be a survival / 'hardcore' game, but when you add in the jackholes that's just adding to the difficulty and I have better things I could be doing.
Also a fan of ATITD but you need about a dozen good friends to play that.
A nice quiet sandboxy crafting game that isn't so 'serious business' would be nice.

"nice quiet sandboxy crafting" sounds like Ryzom. You only craft gear though, not structures. No cost to try it out for a few months.
It's not a mmorpg but you might enjoy Minecraft if you want to build on a grand scale. In any case, good luck finding something that fits your style.
Sorry to hear about the Random Person jerk. Usually the people in global will set that person straight, but sometimes everyone gets preoccupied with their own projects, or sometimes just think that Random Person is a well known local jerk and intend their silence to show lack of support for Random (when it would have been much better to give the new player a bit more support, since you are already exhausted and trying everything you can.)
The starting area "village/deed/settlement" is a spawn site that can't be developed by anyone, so when they said "Anywhere But Here" it was probably meant less as a "not in MY backyard" (though you can get that too), and more of an encouragement to go wander -- which is of course exactly what you were trying to do.
I am not sure if you are totally burned out from your experience, or if it intrugued you enough for one last try, but if you can start in Independence server, I would be willing to pick you up in a small rowboat and we could tour the shorelines and find a nice little empty waterfront area with trees and mining and friendlier neighbors (or none at all), as there are still a lot of nice spots out there just not always easy to find. Especially with a mountain lion on your tail. Anyway in a boat it will be safer and faster to find a quiet little nook with everything you need to do-it-on-your-own.
I am a Wurm addict today, but my first few tries with the game over the years did not always go well. Still, the game was "on paper" the one I most wanted to be playing, and kept drawing me back periodically, so I would give it another shot again a year later and again, and finally the third time was the charm. Part of the reason it went better, was I found a small village willing to let me learn with them for just a week or two, no longterm commitment, before taking my new skills and better knowledge of the game and striking out for a place of my own. Some villages expect you to be part of "their team" and commit to their goals, but quite a few others are set up especially to help new players have a shortterm safe haven to learn before trying to tackle the world solo.
Sometimes I do wish there were a singleplayer version of Wurm though, because in any game -- and Wurm is no exception -- people can sometimes just be jerks =( Anyway, the offer is open if you want to try scouting by rowboat with a guide to find a good starting site. But I will understand if you are a bit too much burned by your first tries, to want to tackle it again right now.

feel you bro
Which server did you choose? you mentioned one of the Freedom servers, do you remember the exact name?
Every game has idiots, most of the Wurm community is generally kind and helpful but if your not going to talk in chat then people will be hostile towards you and suspect your trying to steal from them then do whatever means they can to get rid of you.

I would be open to that sort of thing. Unfortunately tonight and tomorrow are no good.
I'll start a new character and pick your server and get back to you when I'm set.
As an aside, I don't recall which Freedom server it was, all I remember is I'm not a PvP fan and ran to the Freedom portals and picked the first one I came across.

Thanks for the feedback - It is very valuable to us.
Would love to hear other annoyances and things that need fixing, except the obvious that we're already working on
thank you in advance

I also started fresh in Wurm a few days ago (had played it a couple of times before for short periods and love the concept) and although I did have some decent experiences, I was also very put off by the community this time around and found it not worth the stress/drama.
I played Xsyon in beta and LOVED it, but it crashed and burned with a patch just before launch which made it unplayable for a good long time, and so I just fired that back up and am loving my time in that game again.
I will still dabble in Wurm too though, at least a little bit longer, as I do really love the concept... I wish it had more animations but I can live with that (I still love and play text MUDs so i really cant hold Wurms animations against it ) as long as the community is decent.
In sandbox games like Wurm and Xsyon and AtiTD, etc... community is 90% of the equation for me.
Wurm actually has one of the best communities I ever seen, besides an ever-changing deluge of emo kids that like to ruin chat lines here and there. Vets are real nice, for the most part.
The problem is that you asked a question nobody wants to answer; "where can I deed?"
Not really a question of what village to join, because then you would have had tons of invites. Instead, you must have given the impression you wanted a chunk of land, and nobody wants to give up their privacy, nor the control they have over their immediate surroundings.
Because this is somewhat a hermit's game, where even if you live in a big village with tons of people, unannounced neighbors = beef. Nobody wants to settle, have plans for the square-mile of land around you, and then have a neighbor come in and plop right next to your doorstep, usurp your resources, block your roads, change the terrain you worked hard on, etc, etc. 80% of all new neighbor experiences I have had over the years went sour, and when I recently came back and went to the Epic server, I *accidently* planted my deed within the local chat range of another player. He was offline at the time, so there was no way to know, and we weren't that close to him, but people don't want anyone immediately around them, just on global chat for the blab.
It worked out fine though. Dude was wary about us at first, and understandably, but he pretty much made sure we survived the first week be giving us water and other stuff. Good dude.
~and from looking at your newest post, it seems you had a taste of this kind of generosity too; just remember that anyone else plopping near you might not have the right intentions in mind - and most people will assume this up front. People will like you once your established... nomads are always trouble.

I have been play'ng th's game for a long time, I can say that it has one of the best communities in mmo games. If you are unbelievably unlucky you may not get a response to your help cry. If you think about living by yourselves, think again. Freedom servers are actually very friendly but almost all nice coastal places are somewhat settled and going too far away from civilization may be extremely harmfull for new guys. However you can find abandoned places to live in, ask around in local, in global chat.
Wurm is a unique experience. You never have chance to get bored
My bad experience seems to have been due to a single person on his first or second day of the game, and as bad as it was, he seems to be gone now. I've carried on and found the rest of the community to be delightful. That one apple though... it was really bad. I've been playing mmorpgs since M59 in 1996 and MUDs for a while before that, and never have I run into a person quite like this guy. He even searched my character name, discovered an old forum account elsewhere and used my email associated with that to attack me outside of the game!
Anyway... bygones
I will continue to check out Wurm.
This was similar to my experience. I went to the Epic server as I have no desire to be on a carebear one. Got killed.. which is to be expected. Noob tools do not respawn if you are killed in pvp, ok no problem. There is no way to obtain the basic tools for getting startedin the game... WHAT? That is kind of retarded. Unless I want to go begging (which I don't do) there isnt much for me to do in wurm.. I guess I could attempt to kill the next noob that logs in and take his but that would just put him in the same boat.
You can start with making crude tools from rocks and branches, and eventually from there, make everything you need. The only one that is difficult to replace on your own is flint and steel for lighting a forge, although you can buy those at a trader, or just smelt ore in a campfire till you can trade for one with another player.
http://wurmonline.com/wiki/index.php?title=Crude_tools
Description: If you have lost your basic tools, you may rummage through rock tiles and find some basic iron ore and rocks to create crude tools. These tools will have very low quality but may get you going. You can also create low quality fires from wood scraps and kindling.

Xsyon>Wurm...nuff said
as soon as they add character animations.....and make it F2P.
It is F2P, but you can't do many 'griefworthy' actions without a sub.
The game simply *must* have a sub as a deterrant to such, like Darkfall or MO, or EVE, as nobody is willing to actually have monetary loss attached to the risk of getting a ban. True F2P in a setting with that much 'freedom' causes organized asshatting (see; 4chan). Wurm players have enough stories about this already, and so would other games that 'require' a certain barrier to entry.
Also, Haven and Hearth would have a way better community if there was a manditory subscription to PvP and murder, but I expect those loving how they can be a jerk and make as many accounts as they want to say how it would ruin the game... for them.

I've tried to get into Wurm a few times but can never do so. Got a few friends to try it with me last time and we were completely lost. We ended up rerolling, then finding a guy with a boat that offered to take us someplace we could get some land. Unfortunately, his boat glitched into the dock and we had to trek on foot. Needless to say, we got seperated and couldn't find any direction as to where to go.
The game looks like a lot of fun and I've always wanted to get into it but I just can't figure out where to go. Is there a map or something I can review to see where we need to go? I was considering dragging my boyfriend into it....
http://blackburrow.s3-external-3.amazonaws.com/overmap/wurm_overmap.html
This the complete map of wurm includind all server transition methds and connections. you can also see individual servers in more detail by clicking on them.
Navigating itself has its own fun times btw.
"need to go" is not the name of the game.
You just build a settlement and survive, you could have parked and started *anywhere*, but the one place you would 'need to go' eventually is the very place to spawned at in order to get a deed so you can claim your land all legit-like. It costs 10s (1o euros) and requires upkeep after that 10s is eaten by the deed. Otherwise, you don't really need one, but everything will decay offdeed, and the land is technically not yours, so anyone else can deed over a spot you havent put a house on.
~also, you can type /suicide and spawn back at the starting point to get one, as well as meet with all your friends, and you wont drop your noob tools - but everything else will. Never keep money on you, always bank it.
Once you find a patch of land to work with, use the wiki to figure the rest out. It's linked to the very game site itself, and is a *must use* resource as much as the minecraft wiki is. Same guy made both games, after all, and there is tons of noob-friendly survival guides, and lists of all craftable items and their requirements there too.
The game is amazing the moment you're willing to *learn* it.
~In fact, I'm going to do everyone a solid and start writing a guide for noobs to this game, vote for sticky when it's done.
