No shit?  Hawt damn then, I might check it out.  Am really intrigued by the game but after SWTOR I am done with P2P MMOs and wasn't gonna consider TSW dues to GW2, DDO's xpac, and Neverwinter at the end of the year.  Looks like I might be able to dabble with TSW this summer.

Guess that after AoC lost estimated 90% of their original subs within the first couple of month, Funcom is a bit hesitating to release another P2P title. At least one thing they seem to have learned is that their disastrous launches and B-rate games can't carry the weight of a p2p model.

AoC however was reported to celebrate a great revival as F2P (which in AoC's regards is plain P2W) game, so that's probably their choice from now on.

It's always better to start F2P and announce some premium/VIP p2p later on than the other way around. Plus they don't get into the uncomfortable situation having to report quarterly sub losses, but a constantly growing playerbase.

I think that person mis-typed what they meant.  This game is not going to be F2P (as far as what info has been released).  At least I haven't seen any information saying it was anything other than P2P with a vanity cash shop.

I haven't heard anything about the pricing model changing, but it would be nice if it only required a box copy to play... because I been thinking about leveless gameplay and the lack of treadmills in it.

Once you've done everything *once*, what's the point of doing it again? The less they rely on a dangling carrot, the less this game will deserve a monthly subscription. People will cancel out the moment they 'max-out', or generally hit a place where a lull sets in, because it's not worth paying monthly for if you are not still climbing ladders. You're done.

This is how EVE gets people; even if you're not playing, your sub is training your skills. So in some minds, payment = progress, and there is no payment without it.

No, I meant exactly what I typed. It doesn't matter if you're using a hybrid model like LotRO, I still count it as F2P. They've said that the shop is going to be vanity items, but I will be extremely surprised if it remains that way.

Eve was going the exact same route, and the only reason they pulled back in that case was because of severe community backlash. I don't expect that to happen with TSW.

~But it's not a hybrid model like LotRO, afaik.

It's a subscription game with a CS like WoW, Everquest 2, etc, etc, etc. From all accounts so far you *have to* pay a monthly sub to continue playing, and there will be a CS on top of it. Like WoW, Everquest 2, etc, etc, etc.

Why wouldn't they for the first 6 months before going fully F2P like AoC did?

    (beleaguered sigh)

I hate suits and their dirty practices... but I will still prolly buy the damned thing, play the free month, then come back a year later when it's free. They know I will, and it's why they do it... at least, from what I know, Funcom hasn't pushed lifetime subs then gone F2P yet. Don't punish me if I'm wrong, though.

Btw, I mean Everquest 2, not EQ2EX. At one point you had to pay monthly *and* there were typical CS options... beautiful.

P2P means I'll pass.  It will probably go F2P eventually, I can just try it then.

Normally I would feel sorry for the poor saps that buy into this game, but not this time. Theres ample information on Funcoms track record that it cant be ignored.  You ignore it and get burnt, its all on you at that point. I cant wait for this game to launch because im going to be right here to rub salt into the wounds.

You sound bitter.  Did you get burned on AoC for 75 bucks and have to pick up a few extra shifts at McD's?

Yes I did get burnt by AoC, and if you knew my financial situation you would know 75$ isnt a factor on why I felt burnt. Just FYI it was because i am a huge Conan lore fan.

Speaking of financial situations, i have come to realize that I got into the wrong business. All a guy has to do to make millions is make an mmo, and it can be the biggest pile of crap ever released, but all you need to do is make a few fancy CG trailers and brainstorm up a list of great sounding features. With that all you sheep will buy it up in the millions. If somehow you could slap a high profile title on it like a Star wars or a conan type name, oh my god look out profits just doubled.

Mindless sheep will always be mindless sheep, you follow the devs words like its the bible never questioning anything. Im going to sit back and enjoy every minute of the shepard leading you mindless oblivious sheep to slaughter.

oh btw I dont need an alt account like you accused me of. I havs spoken my mind on only one account, its got me warned/temp banned, i have even got into with mnoderators, so stop with the childish arguments. It make you look bad. but then again your a new account so what are you hiding.

I kinda agree with him =. P2P MMO's are a big investment, time and money. This scares buyers, and scares developers. They tend to lean less on innovation and tie more towards imitation. This genre really needs a major overhaul that benefits all of us. Producers are greedy, communites are damaged. /endofworld

Game has potential, but will have to wait and see if Funcome has the ability to deliver good mmo. It is different than most mmos nowadays and for now that is there strongest weapon and chance to have uper hand in this market.

  • DannyGloverDannyGlover Member Posts: 1,277

Some people may call me a mindless sheep or a sucker because I try new mmos when they release. I enjoy taking the plunge, being the first to experience a new mmo. I like to get my hands dirty. But you go ahead and sit on the sidelines and talk trash on the people actually playing mmos.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

I am looking forward for two games as it stands, GW2 and Arche Age.

In the mean time I am mainly having fun a couple of hours a day playing WoT untill either of the above titles come out.

errrrr...    GUILD WARS 2 IS A THEMEPARK

Was talking about this earlier in fact and I'm not so sure it is anymore.

In many ways the way the content in this game is presented is much like Skyrim, in that you go out, see what's there and do your own thing. No two people are likely to have the same exact levelling experience as a result. Which is kind of counter to a themepark is it not? Where everyone is led down the same tracks towards endgame.

Sure the personal story is set, but you can do that whenever you like. You have complete freedom in this game to just do what ever you want. That is something Themepark mmo's do not offer.

Certainly not saying that GW2 is a sandbox though, not sure what it is...maybe it's something new.

On topic: My interest for Secret World died when they said that they were going to charge for the box, a sub and have a cash shop at launch.

There are plenty of other games on the horizon for me to play without supporting a company's attempt at triple dipping it's player base.

SKYRIM ISNT A SANDBOX - its a hybrid

GW2 to me sounds similar to TSW in a it's a thempark but you can go on any ride you like.

part 2 box, sub and cosmetic cashshop  - so just like wow then

Iv'e only totally regretted it with 2 games, DCUO and SWTOR.  I have had some fun with other mmos, even if I unsubbed after a month or grew to hate them.  DCUO I couldn't get to work it might have been alright.

not really interested in TSW or TERA. with GW2, ME3, Tribes, Firefall, and MW:Online on the horizon, i wont know what to play first.

The fatal Age of Conan launch taught me once: Never listen only to blunt "words" and / or advertisment.

Of course you should forgive people, but companies? Its still not that transparent that I / we can see behind companies and developers actually excusing themselves for what they have did wrong in the first place.

That means, I will not buy TSW. I am excited from 1-10 like a 4 or 5. Maybe I will take a look when the trial will be released.

The setting, character development etc isn't that mindblowing for me. Mediocre excitement.

I mean... this setup in TSW is basicly our world, with a twist. They mix up all kind of horror-creatures ever created and give it a little bit of lore. Meh...

Not interested at all. There are some intruiging concepts going into this game but none of the videos of the gameplay I have seen look fun at all.

Also, I'm pretty sure you still have to level up your skills in the game so that whole "no levels" thing they were saying is BS.

Im the same as both these guys, hell I even enjoyed the first month of SWTOR, there is something to me of starting a game at launch, I did it with AC, with WOW, with Conan, SWtor, Rift, every one of those games gave me plenty of entertainment.  Im getting TSW at launch, and maybe TERA as well.  Both games look good to me, and should be enough variety to keep me entertained for sometime.  Also will be playing Path of Exile which is a great Diablo style game in beta right now that will be totally f2p

I would say this is the one im keeping an eye on the most atm, though i am im trying to not have any expectations.

I do plan to try it for sure, I'll let the game decide if i like it and stay.

I certainly hope that we level up the skills, if there is no leveling, no skill leveling, what is there to do?  Just go play Street Fighter.  You have to be able to improve your char thru time, no MMO would ever be successful otherwise

I'm excited, really hope funcom will pull through with launch this time.

I haven't been too thrilled about AoC, it ended up too similar to wow imo, but i've played it quite a bit.

Loved AO, though i got into it really really late. But the depth and complexity, love it. After twinking in AO I can never call "getting an 80 to run you through dungeons for all blue gear" for twinking, it doesn't even compare.

No leveling up of skills, no "fireball 1 2 3 4", only skillpoints to gain and new skills to spend them on. 500+ skills alltogether, all of them can be bought on a single character given enough time. From those 500+ skills you can only have 14 (7 active, 7 passive) "equipped" at any one time.

Skills are what funcom calls "horizontal progression".

There will also be "vertical progression", in the form of weapons and chakras. Clothing will have no stats.

  • ZyllosZyllos Member UncommonPosts: 537

I am excited but skeptic due to the skill system and how they interact with your character.

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

You remind me of my boss who wants to add a feature to our software and says: "Can't you just add a button?" Adding the button is easy. Making the button do anything useful can be very complex.

I have played a bit of the beta and it was like reading a book. The start was ok - pretty standard stuff really. Did some missions. Well made missions, but nothing that new. Then I get this quest that ties really well into the other ones and I start THINKING about what is going on here? All the other guys zombified while this lone guy being all ok? Why? This wasn't even a investigation mission, it was just a regular quest, but it really made me wonder.

Usually when I play computer rpg's I just wait for the plot to unravel in front of me as I click through the quests. Like reading a book, just more awkward. I think TSW is going to be a bit more open-ended. The regular missions give you information you can use when you use when you do the investigation missions. I think this will make the investigation missions quite successful and the regular missions much more useful. Now, instead of a mission just being "kill x of y" you might notice something that helps you solve an investigation mission you are doing if you pay attention.

Anyway, I am most excited about fiddling with the skill system and creating builds (which I have tried and loved) and crafting (which I haven't tried). I think the amount of customization and small tweaks you can do to your character through skills, gear and clothes is going to be awesome. The game also looks very friendly for a player who wants to play the occational hour or three building your character bit by bit, instead of the endgame just being a relentless gear grind.
