Always loved Star Wars as a kid and even now. Really enjoying ToR as well...
But with that said I would love to play a MMO in the Mass Effect world even more. Maybe it's because we know Star Wars and overly familiar with it. There's little mystery to it honestly. Mass Effect is unknown in the fullness of the universe it's created and unexplored. Meanwhile the story is just...well...damn good. I will be picking up Mass Effect 2 again to beat it a couple of times before I get ME 3 this weekend, that's for sure.
Guess I was one of those when Bioware said they are coming out with a MMO I was hoping it was Mass Effect. Skyrim is a good RPg but it's like someone said . The story isn't very strong and while it is open it is repetitive quite a bit. I really like it but it doesn't grip and hold me like Mass Effect does. The story engages you in a stronger way. I appreciate the openess and living in a world like Skyrim but I'm the type that loves a damn good story to dive into. Mass Effect makes me feel like I'm living inside of a book as Shepherd.
The reason ME is better is because it's a single player game, it's been perfectly designed to give a player an awesome path of awesomeness through the story to it's final ending. TOR, on the other hand, is an MMO. Not only that, it's trying to copy WoW, which is bloody awful when compared to just about any single player game with a budget, especially ME. It's like trying to compare apples and oranges, single player games are personal stories, MMO's are trying to give a story to everyone at the same time.
On a side note: I was playing ME2 earlier and while doing the Kasumi mission I heard mention of a planet called 'Illium'. Not quite Ilum, but close enough to be a reuse of the planet name in TOR.
I thought the Shadow Broker DLC was the best of them all, great story and good adventure in it, but what do you mean with that little touch at the end of it?
Also, for Draciil, what was it that made ME3 better than ME2?
The dossiers. Seriously, read all of them, including the correspondence part of them. They provide a lot of background for the ME universe.
I thought the story of ME1 was just awesome... start to finish.
I thought the overall story of ME2 was a pretty meh turn of events... just didn't have the same epic feel for me (human/reaper-hybrid = dumb). of coures, all the planets and little sub-stories were great.
We're also talking about vastly different levels of maturity in the content. TOR is for ages 12-14-ish... ME is aimed at 18+.
While a fun boss fight (unless you have the Widow, then its just way too easy), yeah, I really was scratching my head at that turn of events.
The actual Collector Mission was outstanding.
ME2 wasn't as much about story as it was character development. The "story" such as it was, you got it overwith 30 minutes into the game. The buildup to that story required making characters believable. Quite simple. Any, and all could die on that mission. You want to have a believable character when someone dies.
I only point this out here because there are no outstanding characters in TOR. While the stories are serviceable to good, the companions at times interesting, never once did I really care about them. Never once did I think they were that complex. No character in TOR manages to match up to characters like Subject Zero or Mordin Solus. None in TOR manage to have the complexity that Loghain or Sten had in DA:O. In none of the stories are your enemies rational actors. In DA:O, Loghain was an enemy. Yet when you recruit him, things really get opened up. Hell, when you do the Return to Ostagar DLC, everything he does is rational, even if you disagree with it, and even if it hinders your progress. Same with Wrex in Mass Effect 1 when it comes to the genophage.
The "story" is only good in the sense that most MMO's, if they have a "story" it is a really crappy one. This one is average to above average. It is nothing on par with Bioware's previous work as far as story development goes.

Here is my experience with the two games.
Mass Effect = Boring and awkward.
Star Wars the Old Republic = Entertaining and intuitive.
"Don't corpse-camp that idea. Its never gonna rez"

Many of them you just massively lol on.
