New Hellgate London worthy to try?

tazarconantazarconan Member Posts: 1,013

I recall playing back some years ago the vanilla Hellgate London and it somehow gave me that Diablo style fewling (u know slaying mosters satisfaction ) .

I recall i played 2 characters 1 marine which i loved laying mines machine guns grenades pew pew action and 1 melee dual wielder with swords cant recall the classes names. I played it alot at start when it launched somehow i quitted after a period cause i had some expectations for the game (pvp and pve).I have to admit though it gave u some chills searching carefully in dark corridors or rooms and all of sudden screams and demons running after my poor butt and pew pew on the run hands shaking etc was quite nice heh.

After the new Hellgate launched recently i heard from a guy some good comments and was thinking to download and try it.

Anyone around that played it and can give any insight thoughts and expiriences from the new Hellgate? Is it better? improved? worst?

It is literally the same game, but with an abhorant pay to win cash shop, slower leveling (or at least thats how it feels), and it feels a lot less shiny than I remember it being.  I would say that this is the work of time, but it seems to me that this game isn't aging well, and I really see it as a years old game with nothing new.

My personal assessment is that it is a worse game than it use to be (I think they changed the main quest line a bit but that could just be my imagination or something).

I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.

Well, they actually have fixed some bugs from the original, but the above poster is mostly correct.  Most of the story was rewritten to make it more standard and less obscene in addition to the drop mechanics being completely changed.  There really aren't any drops unique to bosses anymore, since uniques can drop from any enemy within a certain level range.  A lot of the classes have also been completely changed, rebalanced and even had new skills added.

I'd say it's definitely worth a try, since it's free and the only cash shop milestone would be the Act tickets required to enter Act 3 and Tokyo respectively.  You can't enter Act 3 or the Tokyo expansion content without them and they cost $4.99 each in the cash shop.   It's not really a big deal though considering you only need one of each to permanently access the content (they're consumed on use and flag your entire account as activated for the content) and they can also be bought/sold/traded for between players.   I personally bought mine from another player after about 4-5 hours of farming in-game currency for it.

Give the game a shot if you enjoyed Hellgate or just action rpgs in general, but don't expect it to be Game of the Year or anything like that.

If you enjoyed the original version then you will likely enjoy the current version as well.  The npc dialog is more immersive now.  There are some new locations.  The character models were updated.  Changes to the items were made to introduce a cash shop.  You must spend $4 near level 20 to continue and there is another such requirement later on.  Otherwise you can play with no expenditures.

If you liked the original permadeath option I am sorry to say it is gone.  There are 3 difficulty levels but you can switch between them in any station so it is much easier to group than the original.  We all play the same game now.

The game still suffers from inexplicable lag at times which is my major complaint.

    Basically what Grimm said,

My input would be: "OH GOD NO"

I really liked the original Hell Gate, and yet I HATE the new Hell Gate.

I'm playing it right now and while it might not be on the level of newer MMOs, I still find it quite enjoyable to play from time to time.
