Another down, speaks volumes when two Bioware employees leave 3 months after SWTOR release.
Yes, volumes. Read the guy's blog. He retired. People do it all the time. He even states he's looking forward to playing more golf.
retired at 41? Sounds like the early retired or pink slip plan to me.
If you don't want to read much or comprehend what you read... and simply want to take a shot at bashing a game...or a company .. which really is an entirely different subject .. then you can read it that way. At some point when you are unhappy about something you need to let it go... I'm not the poster child for TOR being "good" that's for sure.
The problem is this person simply reached a point in their life.. where they don't have to work for someone else. So they are retiring from that... so they can do the things they have wanted to do. Writing the works they want the time to write... at the pace they want to write.. and relax.
My view would be its too bad it took until they were 41 to reach that point.
Some people are lucky enough to get to that point at a younger age... some people never really reach that point.
None of that has anything to do with early retirement or pink slips.... since this person clearly states they will still be working... they will just be working on their own things instead of writing stories for someone elses games. *edited for clarity*
Really getting tired of the doom and gloomers... <.<
The guy left. The actual reason for it is unknown. Can it have been because of SW:TOR not living up to expectations (if you believe it hasn't) - Yes.
Can it be because he wanted to finish that one project before retiring rather than quitting in the middle of development? - Sure.
Could it be anything else? Yup.
We don't know. We don't have all the facts, we don't have some magical insight and in the end we can all only guess.
Personally I believe he wanted to finish up SW:TOR before leaving the game industry writing, and thus left when he's finished what he were supposed to. Of course, others might want to make more cynical and complicated guesses. And go ahead.
Just remember we don't actually know.
------
EDIT: Also, after reading the actual blog post, how can anyone doom and gloom it? He celebrated his retirement with Bioware and it was his choice so he obviously weren't fired.
How the heck can you actually doom and gloom that? Then again, I guess the same people believe he's lying in the first place.

Yes, I retired too, ironically because of 'differences" at work.
Projection. You retired because of "differences" so he must have too?
For the record, I have my exit strategy planned from my career as well. There are a ton of different reasons to leave a company, even when things are good.
Ninja edit: I'll be 41 when I "retire" as well.
Quote from his blog: "I’m leaving to focus more time and energy on my novels and other non-video game related projects. But even though I’ll no longer be working on games for BioWare, I’m not going to be severing all ties with them. Many of my closest friends still work at the company, and I’m also in the process of writing the next Star Wars: The Old Republic novel, though I can’t say too much about it yet."
This is not doom and gloom but apparently it has been 3.639 hours.
Arguement from ignorance.
Your assuming that a claim is false simply because it has not been proven true or cannot be proven true (at this time).
See we can play this game all day long
You're right. Silly me. I can only go by what the guy says and assume he's being honest, you can see the deeper meaning.
I forgot there were psycics in the world.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
Never had any interest in playing Swtor but, thanks to tall the hate and gloom threads, the game has provided me with hours of entertainment. MMORPG.com forums never fail to entertain!

My reading comp is fine TY anyway. Mearly poking fun at the instant excuse making.
He is not retiring, he is a writer and has side projects of his own. Only he didn't leave BW due to retiring. You don't have to read the tea leaves to know there will be major cutbacks to staff now. Like I said a few posts up, EA has liquidity issues right now (stock issues) and they are going to cut back all of their projects to brace themselves. Stop being so damn defensive, Im not attacking the game, I know where its going. It doesn't need a push from me.
Bah, stupid edit don't seem to show and only makes my posts spaces go... well.. postal.. sorry for the bad pun.
Anyway, after actually reading the blog entry I don't get how anyone can think he got fired, left on bad terms or as a result of SW: TOR "failing". Unless you believe he lies about everything in that post, in which case you might as well assume he still works for Bioware and the part of him not doing that any longer were a lite too.

Can't insult people only because they refuse to believe 'made up facts' on internet by some random guy who just some how 'knows it all'. right?

It's possible that you're right, let me first admit that. I do find it unlikely (personally) however, as they could easily cut down on other reasources than a reknowned writer (unknown writers for example).
Regardless, we only know for a fact what that blog post tells us (or rather, that is the only info we can assume is fact based on our current knowledge). There as been no evidence of your assumption other than your 'reading between the lines' and interpretation.
Still, it is possible of course, however unlikely.
This is my opinion though, and the beauty of opinions is that people don't have to share them.

There is a reason your position is called "arguement from ignorance", I'll let you figure it out.
This clearly means the game is going to F2P within a month. Or close down. Either way, its the end of a genre.

Absolutely. This guy was not "thanked" because of swtor failure. Everything is ok, and the swtor staff will not feel any collateral damage.
Now close your eyes, and swallow that blue pill.
Granted i only played SWTOR during beta and never got a chance to buy it and play it.... i never read or heard that it is already a failure? are they shutting down servers or something?

100+ servers close down in a month? that would be some world record...
His blog indicates that the retiring from Bioware is just another stepping stone in his working life. Not sure why ppl here think that has to be because of how SWTOR turned out to be. Retiring from the entire games industry because of that reason wouldve been a silly dramatic move. Why not just believe the man?

We know this for a fact, He is not retiring. He is writing a book right now called Children of Fire. Working still means he is not retiring.
As for EA, yeah their liquidity issue is a market analysis feature right now. So that's not my opinion, its professional opinions who bet real money on its validity. Right or wrong is another matter.

aka Swtor's failure to meet expectations.

I do believe him, just question the motive and timing.
Christ, the batch of doom&gloom naysayers are annoying in their broken record ranting >.<
After years of writing for other people's IP's and very likely a crunch time period of the past few years, the guy wants to spend more time on his own books. Now that has NEVER happened before, right, that people who're expert level in their field stop working directly under a company and go freelance or work for their own? So rare! Right.
The wishful thinking of doomsday prophets is strong in this one >.>

Maybe you should rethink your strategy when leaving a work place then. Just because you might have pissed some people off on your way out doesn't mean we all do that. Generally it's quite short sighted but obviously your specfic case might be different.
Recently I left a work place after working there for 15 years. Was it because I hate the direction the company was going? No but I was tired and wanted a change. That's natural, we all want different things at different times in life. I have many happy memories of the place.
Also as he's a writer it may just be the case he's successful enough now to pick and chose he's assignments. For many writers thats the ultimate goal and he may now not need the financial secruity of a permenent job.
I'm sure the haters will say it's because he hates the game and wants nothing to do with it, thus vindicating their opinion. Frankly if it makes you feel better go for it, I'll see you around when the next time a great white hope of MMOs offends you.
Look there are so many variables we just don't know. You can ask yourself if SWTOR was a blockbuster success rising up to 5 million subs, and the writing was heralded as the greatest in a game ever if he would have left. If he wasn't working for a studio that was now aligned with EA would he have left? Maybe not, maybe it went from being a passion and a dream to a chore and a grind. Maybe he just didn't want to write stories for the few series Bioware has that are now going to get rehashed and manufactured under EA.
Who knows, but I could see all of this ringing true and not spelling gloom and doom for SWTOR. 12 years is a long time, and imagine if your small company rose up to the heights Bioware has and was now working with EA and how you could see the passion turning to grind. I could definitely see leaving that setting and focusing on my own projects, ones I can be in charge of and be passionate about. Especially now that he has developed a following as a writer. His books were all highly reviewed, and then the latest, Revan, found him getting slammed left and right. Many people hated it, and I could see his hands being tied down with this story. It had to be so guided and restricted and it can hurt an author. It was like it wasn't even him writing it. You can definitely see a shift in his writing from when he was likely allowed free reign to where he was restricted.
All things considred I am really happy for Drew and I will definitely be reading his stuff. I think it was the right move for him, and I think it does spell some doom and gloom for Bioware in general now that they are associated with EA so heavily. We all know what EA does to game companies. There is no denying it. Maybe not bad for SWTOR though.
Regardless, we only know for a fact what that blog post tells us (or rather, that is the only info we can assume is fact based on our current knowledge). There as been no evidence of your assumption other than your 'reading between the lines' and interpretation.

Right. He's writing. Now, I don't know how it works in your country but in My country people who retire still are able to and usually do stuff they enjoy after retiring from their workplace.
If he enjoy writing books, why should he stop that because he retired?
Then again, maybe it's just us. We're "socialists" after all. <.<
EDIT (if it works this time): Yes, EA is a bit shaky on the market now. I admit that. I doubt he leaves because of that though.
Karpyshyn was the principal writer for SWTOR. That's not a connection, BigDaddyX? O.o
Connection as in he quit because of SWTOR and somehow it speaks volumes about the game? a very vague statement so yeah i don't see the connection here.
What does it tell us he quite because SWTOR sucks?
Hellen Kellar can see it though.
Wasn't she the SWTOR graphics designer?
At the last minute, she changed the graphics from 220 grit to 60.
its funny how hard some ppl look for ways to connect a person leaving the industry and trying to prove a game is a failure. You guys really think he would be let go??? Bioware is known for their stories and if anything whether SW:ToR failed or not isn't because of the storyline. If anything this is one of the staple points for taking your time instead of trying to hit lvl 50 and thhen complaining about lack of content.
