I got my start in RPing on pen and paper, and one of the most innovative systems I can remember is the GURPS (Generic Universal Role Playins System). Everything is skill based, with very little emphasis on race and a ton of emphasis on attributes and skills, similar to Palladium's system, but better thought out.
Now, would an MMO, sandbox style with themepark "Islands" work if the system were GURPS? It would be a bit "Heavy Metal"-esque, with cowboys on robot horses booking passage on the local steamboat for a transfer in Metropolis X to a luxury spaceliner, blah-blah, but I think it would be interesting, if a bit gritty, with the cutthroat attitude of EVE for those who want it, and the "Look-At-What-I-Can-Do" jump around in circles stupidity of WoW for those who want that. I mean, c'mon, who doesn't want to see the waste-wandering Ronin chop a "look at my noob robot suit my mommy bought for me" in half because they thought they were invincible?
Anything new here? Hmmm... Nope. o/

maybe, but I think you trying to please all of the people all of the time, and that usually ends up pleasing none of the people ever. But go for it, you will never know until you try.
Currently bored with MMO's.
