I am asking because of the current amounts of hype being given games. TOR was given tons of hype, now it seems to be given tons of hate. GW2 is generating megatons of hype, every other post here seems to be on some aspect of it and referring to it in someway. When it launches will it also generate the same amount of hate and disappointment? Time will tell. But given the hype - hype that is often rabid towards anything that might be construed as being against the game - can GW2 or any game live up to it?
I am not against GW2, am not saying that it might or might not be a great game. What I AM asking is will even a great game live up to all the hype? This is actually for any game - they keep coming up on the horizon, get hyped, get launched, then the post theme towards them changes and the next game comes, rinse and repeat. I have been noticing this for awhile.. thought it became really apparent with TOR, and then when Diablo III - a single player game with a co-op option - announced it would not launch with PvP - there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
I, myself, have been cured of buying games pre-launch. I have had too many bad experiences doing so. I want an assessment of the game, post launch, so I know what it is like not what is advertised. I would also like a short demo of the gameplay... not a free trial where i get to play for a week or so, but just a short trial so I can get a feel for the game - maybe 4-5 hours play. Too much to ask... most likely.
Anyways - I ask you - can any game live up to the hype that is given pre-launch?

I feel your pain, | was a follower and active community member of FFXIV for well over a year before launch, and it let me down hard.
I think GW2 deserves the hype its been given, we have gotten enough info on it to make a valid assessment. But your plan sounds best its what im planning also, my heart still isnt mended...
Yeah sure, as soon as 100% of the mmo playerbase, every single player of every single game, share the exact same wants needs views and opinions.
Its not even about a gazillion different players all wanting a gazillion different things. Even if you split the entire playerbase as a whole straight down the middle 50/50 with only 2 seperate mindsets for each half no game can live up to the hype.
Games are too easy to hype. With such easy access for so many ppl to hype games no game will live up to it.
For every one player who loves the game when it finally comes out you will find one player who hates all the same things.
Until all players share the same brain or we are no longer allowed access to websites that we can hype at, it just wont happen.
I wonder which one of those two things will happen first.
Short answer not anymore. Furthermore, just follow and pay attention to the haters and hypers and 3 months down the road they will be here singing a different tune; it never fails.
Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box. ~ Italian proverb
maybe not, because the hype tends to go overboard in every game... but i hope GW2 lives up to the hype because they (Anet) do try to please their players with good games. Some other popular companies dont really care about the players, and sit back waiting to collect paychecks instead of making their games unique
I feel GW2 has already lived up to the hype. Why? Because it is a well known MMORPG that is going F2P at launch. In my eyes, that already puts this game on my hype list (regardless of how I feel the gameplay is IMO).
This already answers the question on topic, since I feel GW2 is living up to the hype.
Not only does level of hype vary by the individual, but the very definition of the word hype seems to vary among forum-goers, ranging from general anticipation to blind, unfounded, unwavering excitement. Notice that the latter definition itself assumes the game is either already objectively bad or the "hype-ee" has somehow been otherwise misled. You can see the circular reasoning that ensues. I suspect general disdain for the fanboy mentality has something to do with definitions of similar extremism as that of the second.
On the subject of my own history with this entity known as hype, I can only speak for myself. I am pleased to say that almost no game has failed to live up to its hype for me. Rather, I find that gaming media and general information available on the internet today allows me to make a fairly accurate assessment of whether or not I will enjoy the game before I even try it. This allows me to make an informed decision. It follows that I have ultimately enjoyed almost every game that I expected to enjoy.
I honestly can't think of a game that I expected to be great and turned out to be anything less than great. I can certainly think of games that were disappointing (in that I wish they were better), but I also expected them to be disappointing based on what I learned before playing it.
F2P or buy to play? I believe it is buy the game you can play it, not just "download and go play, by the way check out our cash shop".

Skyrm lived up to the expectations, if not exceeded them.
It's the first love syndrom. No MMO is ever as good as your first. It's the only time MMOs are ever really new. After that every game has that seen it, got the t-shirt feel.
Then it just becomes a search to find what's missing, and what's missing is something most ppl will never find. A game that feels like you haven't done all this before.
About to go play a new character on it in a minute - so fair enough. That's 1.

Actually I always feel like that in EVE, because even after playing for awhile there is still alot I have not done. WH's, null sec wars, etc.

Most games will not live up to the hype.
I will be picking up GW2 because I liked GW1. I like the idea of the same sort of system of skills and abilities picked to form a build and your skill at using them in a group enviroment is what seperates you instead of time spent grinding gear.
Yet grinding is still cool. You want flaming blades, glowing shields, or daggers dripping with blood? Earn enough rep or beat a certain boss for them. This style of game appeals to me as a plyer who loves being competitive and willing to put in time but maybe not as consistent as it takes to play for a strict raiding schedule.
What these forms and articles do is blow up a certain aspect of the game. RVR we will have DOAC again!...maybe but unlikely. I noticed the devs put additional emphasis on the "personal story" as a way to piggyback onto SWOTOR. Cool, story was good in GW1 and I expect no less from GW2 but this is not a defineing feature to me at least. The no dedicated healer is a nice different direction to take as GW1 random arenas were plagued by having a monk on your team or not. It was extremely hard to win a random arena without a dedicated monk because to have success without one required a greater amount of coordination (spike/disable attacks) then the average random group possessed.
While I will love the individual responsibility of health management I honestly do wonder how that will play out with the general populace. No hard aggro mechanics and insignificant outside healing makes deaths your own fault for the most part. I wonder how much this will scare away below average players. Then again, because this game is buy to play, I suppose the money has been paid when said player realize they cannot hide amongst the ranks as easily as other games.
Hype is an iffy thing. What is one man's goldmine the next could care less about or at least consider it a slight pleasentry compared to the next feature. Today's games get every major feature hyped seperately to appeal to these only one thing matters types of players. IT HAS RAIDS. IT HAD PVP. IT HAS NO HEALERS. IT HAS FLEXIBLE SKILLS SELECTION. Marketing at its finest. Nothing wrong with that.
every game i play lives up to my hype, which is all that matters.
I understand your concerns and we all have opinions BUT
Why bother bringing this up? This "too much hype" has been discussed almost as much as the fanbois saying GW2 is the messiah... you'r almost spreading the hype around since all your thread will do is attract fanboys that will "defend" the almighty messiah from being criticized
Simple reason for hype - too much innovation = too much to discuss about
<INSERT NAME OF MMO YET TO BE RELEASED HERE>cannot be portrayed accurately until we know what needs improvement or correction.
I'd also be willing to bet on the fact that there are some people on the band wagon posting fanboi responses to every possible critical post against the anticipated game who have also been singing the praises of said game for not being a WoW clone, will get it installed and quit it, come back here and trash it for not being like WoW.
better than yet another "insert game name" is the best game ever thread.
