Progress of STO - Release version vs current version

ChromeBallzChromeBallz Member UncommonPosts: 342

A friend of mine has been trying to get me into STO again, but the version of late beta/release still left a bitter taste in my mouth.

What has changed, what has been added? What makes the game worth the Star Trek monniker now? Has it improved as much as my friend is trying to say?

Playing: WF
Played: WoW, GW2, L2, WAR, AoC, DnL (2005), GW, LotRO, EQ2, TOR, CoH (RIP), STO, TSW, TERA, EVE, ESO, BDO
Tried: EQ, UO, AO, EnB, TCoS, Fury, Ryzom, EU, DDO, TR, RF, CO, Aion, VG, DN, Vindictus, AA

It is free to play now, and from what I hear a lot better (that is from a guy who I played with at release).

Easy to just check it out for yourself.

I was n beta and launch and left shortly thereafter.  Went backa few months ago and while some of the kinks have been worked out, if you had issues with it and left, I can't imagine it will keep you interested for longer than a week.  Since it free though what's the harm?  Besides no matter what I say or anyone else does, the only opinion that realy matters is yours.  If i listened to opinions,I never would have played SWTOR and had, (currently having) a good time.  We have a about 15 guilds what we fight with so it keeps it fun and fresh for me in spite of  what the haters say.

It IS better.  I have no shortage of posts ripping on what STO did and didn't do, but I'm willing to say that for free, it's a pretty good game.  Still wouldn't pay a sub, but the free model gets you a game well worth playing.

I agree.  STO is ok now that it can be played for free.  I would not recommend paying for anything at this point as the paid content is not all that good.  For free, you should get a week or so amount of fun out of it.

How much of it is p2w, if anything at all? Is there more to the game now than ship and ground combat?

In terms of ships, it can be P2W.  They did add in a Duty Officer (DOFF) system to send "away teams" on various assignments.  It is essentially just a click through that yield a reward.  The rewards are xp, dilithium, crafting samples etc.  Think of it as a farmville for STO.  Other than that, it is still just space or ground combat.

There is a definite element of p2w about the game, but since there doesn't seem to be any real pvp it doesn't matter much.

Also is very gear orientated.  For example a tier 4 ship(the last free ones) with full borg gear can easily take a tier 5(c store) without and then some.

Be specific, which tier 4 ship and which tier 5 ship?
