EQ1 vs EQ2

schrollbachschrollbach Member UncommonPosts: 72

With EQ1 going free to play later tonight, I'm tempted to give it a try, but I just want to know what your opinion on the games is.

I would think the games are similar, but what I'm looking for is a game where people group up to do things in the game. Right now in EQ2 i've soloed everything up to 38 and it's getting boring/old fast.

Is grouping in EQ1 more prominent? Is the game "harder"? I don't have a lot of time to play and I just want to know some things from people with experience in both games.

What's your guys' opinion on the games?

I have played EQ1 from Kunark to Gates of Discord (at a top tier raid level). My experience for EQ2 is a iksar bruiser leveled to 55 mostly solo with little old raid experience.

The biggest difference is the requirement of groups. In EQ1 you will get smeared on the ground into a pulp if you go against an equal leveled monster. Only certain classes can solo w/ ease but even then it will take them ages to level. The reason I quit EQ1 is a prime example of the difficulty.

Uqua pre-patch raid you zone into a tiny room and will be trained within 5 min by mobs constantly that hit for thousands. Did I mention that upon entering you get a miasma debuff that makes all of your stats 1? The only way to get the miasma off you is to loot an item off the mobs you killed; 1 mob 1 item. After you survive that your entire raid force (of about 70~) will be in a TINY room which has a door and a table with four key's on it. Every 10 seconds the lock changes and a random person will be whispered which key is safe. If the incorrect key is picked everybody dies.

It is a very fun game to explore and quite the adrenaline rush, I personally prefer it over EQ2 as it is way too easy after they nerfed it to hell and back.

AA's in EQ2 are only in hundreds. AA's in EQ1 are in the thousands. Nuff said.

wow i love the sounds of EQ1 from above...i minded the outdated graphics until he said how hard it was to play it and grouping seems to be a regular thing to progress in pve. my mmo days are back in business.

EDIT: is the free to play version gamebreaking along with the shop for someone who doesnt pay for that stuff?

the games are not similar - beyond lore

for playstyle, EQ2 is more similar to WOW than EQ1

Not sure, the game went F2P today actually. With a new server opening up as well. You can find the "details" here:

    http://www.everquest.com/free

Most things they said you can alternatively unlock with one-time purchases stuff like unlocking certain races/clases or # of items you can carry. Although honestly there is nothing wrong with the free race/class combos, the inventory stuff might be rather annoying though and probably will be what most people pay for.

Warrior and Cleric are "free" which are the meat and potatoes of any group.

EQ1 used to be very group heavy a few years ago but most people have soloed in it the last few years.....Now some of that may change with the game going f2p and getting a new influx of players.....THere should be a decent amount of vets returning to try the f2p and many of them enjoyed the group aspect of EQ1...Also there are only 4 classes that the free/silver players have access to and none of them are very solo friendly so they will most likely have to group up at some point.....
