3. Mechanics that work with the world. Just slapping Wows mechanics on top of any world is not good enough. When you use a famous IP the game must feel like it belongs to the IP, not just be a revamped Wow.
Stuff I don't want:
1. Hamsterwheel grind. You know when every day you play feels just like the day before. Standing and grinding a thousand orcs, doing the same few raids over and over for months.
2. Skill rotation combat. YOu know when you stand still inthe same spot and click fastkeys in a particular order over and over. It sucks.
3. Easy combat. You know when you defeat most mobs within 5 seconds and only a few elite monsters pose any difficulty. i want to be on the edge when I fight, not having a snorefeast.
I want a game that challenges me when I play it, and most of the time, not just against a few raid bosses. games give me less and less of that.
My post would've been very much like this. The single likely thing that would put me off a game would be bad and/or unoriginal gameplay.

I agree, that is the most boring combat in the world to me. It's fine for the first 5 minutes of gameplay. There after it's terrible and combat like that has the potential to ruin the game for me even if other elements aren't so bad.
I'll play a game that is fun and continues to be fun as I put time into it.
I won't play a game that isn't fun or stops being fun as I put time into it.
It really is that simple. A game that is "fun" could have many different traits and two games that are both fun could be very different from each other.
Must Have: DAOC 2 circa SI and most certainly not with TOA mandatory raiding/artifacts
Must Not Have: Standard Theme Park Design with gear grinding endgame.
Nice to Have: EVE in a Fantasy setting with a combo skill system that includes real time skill training with a form of extra reward for those who put in extra time actually playing game. (to silence the work hard for their progression crowd)

3) Balanced PvP (Not balanced in a 1 vs 1, I think each class should have another class that is its bane, I mean balanced across factions and in group PvP)
Things it must not have:
1) Compulsary crafting. I dont mind if crafting makes great items or items using raid drops, I just dont want to be forced into it myself like some games like EQ2 have done in the past (forcing you to have a high level crafter to finish various Heritage Quests).
2) Spell effects that make no sense. I prefer good graphics, but can overlook it for gameplay, but having spell effects that dont match the spell description really bugs me. I refused to play Conjurer in EQ2 because they had an Earth attack that had the graphic of a big red sword chopping downwards, to make it worse it was the primary nuke for the class.
3) Boring races. I'm a human 24/7, I dont want to be a human in a fantasy game or a human with pointy ears. I have been spoilt in the past with Everquest and Vanguard so I wont settle for a game that doesnt have at least one or two interesting races that appeals to me.
For the poll I picked other: I would have said boring combat. Its the biggest deal breaker for me. Games like Vanguard have shown that even traditional hotbar clickers can be interactive and fun by adding things like counter attacks / spells and reactive defence.
I chose Other. My choice would be " The end game ". I just can't play mmorpgs that mainly focus on the end game - and that being instance and gear grind. I just hate when the only content left is to run same instances over and over again for better gear. That is usually the point where I cancel my sub and and take my sh*t somewhere else.
4 Things a Game Must Have to Make Me Stick Around Longterm
1. Living/breathing environments....must have ambient sound, must be beautiful and explorable without invisible barriers (much)
2. Compelling crafting system with gathering that isn't idiotic and raid-instance dependent
3. Customizable housing (to what degree is debatable), if possible a carpenter/lumberjack profession to craft housing items (this "requirement" of mine is so rarely seen that I can't say it's a MUST, but it's an absolute WANT)
4. (sorry, but have to have 4) SMOOTH combat controls....it should feel like an extension of my hand
4 Things a Game Must NOT Have for Me to Stick Around Longterm
1. An annoying community of adults that act like pre-teens (I can overlook this if the game is REEEEALLY good)
2. Linear questing to the point of it being completely restrictive....I'm not a big fan of quest logs and quest hubs
3. Bad music. It drives me insane.
4. (again, sorry, but it's necessary) FFA loot ruleset (at least not on ALL the servers)...I want somewhere I can play without it, I don't mind if those that want it have it, but I want a place WITHOUT FFA PvP
Must Haves: - In-depth character creation/customization. - An open and freely explorable world. - Lots of variety in activities, ie: more than just bash on mobs.
Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Things it must have:

2) Fun combat

MUST HAVE
Excellent story/background/lore
Large world that's alive without SHARDS/instances - don't want to wait till 65% of level cap till I see an other player
Good party/group options
MUST NOT HAVE
Fixed faction based PvP
Auto-walk to quest objects and/or forced quest-objective tracker
PvP-toggle on PvP servers *WTF?*
Must have:
1. A large, non-instanced game world
2. Plenty to do beside combat
3. Good background lore (Edit: lore does not mean story)
Must not have:
1. Aimed at e-sport PvP (other PvP is fine)
2. "Free 2 play" with cash shop
3. Fast action (Twitch) combat

Likes: A decent,generous UI
Balance
A sense of wondering what is around the next corner
Dislikes: Clunky Combat
Worthless sense of reward and achevement
A lonely, scrub world
Ballerinas are always on their toes. Why don't they just get taller ballerinas?
must have:
interesting crafting/harvesting system edit: or world made for exploring (gw2)
long character progression
must not have:
ffa pvp
1. A degree of risk (eg losing items or exp when you die)
2. Open world PvP
3. A well developed lore and backstory.

IF a game wants to keep me long term it needs to have the following:
1. good community (which pretty much rules out FFA PVP games or games involving gankers)
2. Slow leveling, always an incentive to level.....Raiding for gear/faction alone will not keep me playing
3. Meaningful crafting....
IF a game wants to lose me quickly:
1. Extremely fast leveling that is no challenge
2. terrible community (even if tis a good game)
3. Expensive (whether cash shop or sub)
Must Haves:
- In-depth character creation/customization.
- An open and freely explorable world.
- Lots of variety in activities, ie: more than just bash on mobs.
Bad Things:
- Cash Shops
- Forced Grouping
- Forced PvP

It's hard to not just say SWG features but will try...
Need:
1. Fun combat
2. Fun non combat features
3. Player craft that is important
Must not have:
1. Cash shop
2. Instance travel everywhere
3. Instance pvp.
I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.
Oh the irony.
Binge:
Well crafted quests with the quality of story driven, single player RPGs (these don't exist yet)
Combat that rewards both skill and strategy (though I'm not great at the skill part)
Systems that connect players in non-combat ways, but do not involve guild dominance (don't think these exist either)
Cringe:
Long, effort driven character progression with no alternatives
Abundance of quests, especially unimportant ones that I shouldn't need to handle.
Combat that plays out the same no matter what you are fighting
