How do you win?

dontadowdontadow Member UncommonPosts: 1,005

This keeps coming across my mind.  I want logical, non flaming answers. With the way Guild Wars 2 is built, not being gear based, not having a strong gold influence, what do you consider "winning" at it.  Does winning at a game like GW 2 mean that others are losing?

I think of this question because itssomething we joke about in tabletop dungeons and dragons.  I run across a new player oncee a year who builds this broken character, and we have to explain how he's not playing against the other people but with them, so it doesnt matter how powerful his character is, it has to be able to work well with others.  So long as everyone has a chance to shine in dungeons and dragons, all players are considered winning. I assumed this to be the case in guild wars 2.

IN other mmos i have played it was easy to see winning, especially the real play to win games. Runes of magic i won when i had tons of defense for my armor. In Rift when i reached level 50 and had tier 3 armor.  But I don'[t see the winning aspect of GW2.

Mostly fun for me. Making alts. Occasinally pvp, but more like WvW, not tournaments and all that stuff.

You do not 'win' MMOs, you may complete content, but you do not win...  As for WvWvW, you can win the current battle, then you get a new one every 2 weeks, verse equal skilled servers (beginning may have problems, due to no records to base this on)...So every 2 weeks you could win something, but as a whole....No.

I played EQ on and off, mostly on, for like 10 years, I never got my 'you won!' trophy...Played UO for 7-8 years, same thing, and it's the same for every other real MMO I played.

MMOs are made to be open ended.

Being successful at playing the game.

Being better than your direct competitors.

Having a better k/d ratio/point score than the average joe on your pvp server (competitive pvp).

    By mastering your profession.

    By mastering all professions.

By achieving the goals you set.

    Choose for yourself.

I agree! I use to PVP or Raid and you would get gold or a gear set! Now what do you get to motivate you? The PvP looks awesome but eventually that will get old without some kind of good prize! :)

Other MMOs you recieved or had a chance to recieve a special drop. I think that is what he is going for, or at least that is what I want to know. The battle for WoW honor for example gave you pvp gear sets that made you stronger. Here what do you win? Don't say the fun of it because fun runs short if there is nothing else to do. People will get bored and quit playing.

That's just it, You play GW2 for as long as you have fun playing it.

This is not a flame but i am sure it will come across as one.

If you have to ask how to win at a MMO then you have not played an MMO, you do not "Win" a game with no ending, this is not a single player game.

I am sorry i do not understand the way you have phrased this or i am not falling for the attempt at trolling cause i am seriously bewildered at the actual question.

So in a more succinct manner to answer your question : You do not win in GW2 or any other MMO for that matter.

I am kinda thinking this thread is a bait about the cash shop and buying gems.

    Edit:

Even I am not biting on that one if it is.

You shouldn't be so stiff about ad&d, if he want to play against the other just let him do it, and see what happen.

  • stayghoststayghost Member Posts: 29

play for enjoyment. When you aren't having fun, don't play

Did some one give you a cookie everytime you beat Super Mario Bros?

these modern incarnations of MMO's have conditioned people to keep running on a hamster wheel

winning = having fun without getting bored. MOBA's, LoL, DOTA2 are games that provide endless hours of fun. GW2 will have the fun pvp, in addition to, arguably, the best PVE on the market.

Their are special drops, and gear you earn in GW2...It just isn't suped up stat wise, it is more visual.  So you earn prestige or whatever points and get stuff, open raids/dungeons have drops....It is more optional (for good or bad) in GW2 though, as you do not need it to compete as much as you do in other mmos.

In My Opinion. You only play GW2 for as long as you're having fun. Its not like other MMO with artificial time sync that keep you playing. If its not fun.. stop playing.

Id say the only form of winning based on the OPs standards would be finding the best looking gear from the open world boss events at high level or being Number 1 in the pvp tournaments.

Ok, well that makes no sense....

He means that when you have a CHANCE of getting a special drop its just that, chance, not winning since it was based on luck.

    Was pretty clear to me.

Oh I see now, you are right. But my point is is that there is a chance of getting something useful, therefore winning.

Ok you wanted a non-flaming answer to a very silly post.  First do you understand that the objective of an RPG wheter it be a single player or MMO is to tell a story and for your character to participate in the story.  Plus you have the added effect that its in a persistant world where there is no such thing as winning or losing.

Now if as I suspect you meant to ask:  Why does GW2 not offer threadmill style progression then I will answer that firstly.  The game is not made to make you stick around because its not carrot on a stick game play and secondly the progression you seek is there but it is not tied to gear or beating dungeon mobs.  The core foundation of GW2 is to have fun in a living breathing world while removing most of the bullsh*t that traditional carrot on a stick MMOs do to string you along to keep paying a monthly fee.
