Looking for my new Sandbox

cronos1013cronos1013 Member Posts: 29

So after months of hopefully waiting, I just learned that The Repopulation is totally abandoning crafters with their simplified resource system which will create armies of crafters who can make identical stuff....And therefore I am looking for another sandbox to go play in.

I want UNIQUE crafting system which allows for crafters to differentiate themselves from others, open world player housing, a decent commnity not filled with trolls (although some are always going to be there), I want a PvP system in place but am not prepared to deal with full loot.  I want a player run economy that actually works.  And I want it to be with people running around not spaceships...I already have an Eve account and want something different.

I don't care if it is free, or if it's a sub, or if it's a cash shop, so long as it's not pay2win.

Basically I want a new version of SWG pre NGE, but with new IP.  Although I'm not holding my breath....anyone have any suggestions?

Hello mate, IMO the only sandbox worth playing is EVE.

I have tried so many over the years and none of them are any good. I just played Mortal Online for a few days, Awful Awful game.

Sorry I can't help you, the game you are looking for sounds good. :)

That's what I was afraid of.  Where have all the sandbox developers gone?  There has to be one somewhere whose looking for their next project...hell I'm sure we could kickstart the damn project...

Unfortunately Id agree, Eve is the only really triple A sandbox.

As far as land based sandboxes.. I can't think of any big ones out there right now worth your time.

Yep, we all feel your pain.

I play Skyrim for my sandbox thrill, My true hope is in the hands of Archeage but who knows when that will be. :(

If they don't port that to a US market, I swear I'm going to cry...why do all of our developers hate us?

Only thing I can think of is Perpetuum Online, it's an EVE clone except for you run around.  It is with robots though so if you want to be an elf or a dwarf it probably won't work.  Crafting in almost all MMORPG's is poorly done, and nearly all MMORPG's don't actually have economies, they have gold sinks instead.  Perpetuum and EVE are the only ones i have played that do it properly.  To have a true economy there needs to either be item destruction or full loot though, since otherwise there is no real demand for crafted goods.

Was hoping someone would have chimed in with something.  Ryzom is the closest i can think of, I'm doubting it will suit but you'd have to try it and see what it's like now.

I actually disagree here, if item decay is done properly, it works just as well to create demand for crafted items, and doesn't hit new players like the ton of bricks that destruction or full loot is.  To work properly, nothing should be exempt from decay, and in my opinion, items should lose a bunch of their durability on death as well steady loss of durability on use.

If a repair mechanic is implimented, the item should permanantly lose like 10% of it's maximum durability for each repair.  This would create a system where people are more likely to use less amazing gear because it will get permanantly broken.  This creates demand for crafted items (Like T2 gear in Eve Online).

The learning curve doesn't need to be vertical and the gameplay doesn't need to be unforgiving for a game to be a successful sandbox.

I just started Mortal online for 2-3 weeks ago. The rough old school UI + hardish learning curve made MO difficult to approach. I could play about an hour or two per day for the first week before frustration arrived.

Then I got over the UI and actually made decisions what direction I want to develop my character and it got a lot more interesting. Actually it was my 3 characters: 1 mage, 2nd miner and 3rd crafter and switching between those characters and their roles I found a lot of fun too.

I'd like to hear why kanester thinks it's awfull awfull game. I'd give it a shot :)

Yeah, I think Ryzom may be what you are after, it has one of the most advanced crafting systems this side of SWG.

Just don't expect very much "Massively" in your Multiplayer Online RPG.

I got about a week into Mortal Online, and then I quit, the UI is awful, and the gameplay feels real clunky...I am looking for something a bit more recent feeling.  If i wanted to play an old game, I could simply go play SWGemu.

agreed. this should be at the core of every sandbox game. however having outlaw resource rich areas (like at the fringes of the map) where the law is not present and full loot is in effect makes for very good pvp. EvE strikes the best balance with high sec/low sec imo.

but yea, definately durability loss should be the driving force behind armor/weappon demand in game. full loot pvp should be something you choose to partake in, not something forced on you every time you walk outside city gates by bands of gankers that will only fight you if they know you have no chance.

I'd check out Wurm Online... If your really into crafting, want open world housing, pvp, a helpful and welcoming community theres no better. Keep in mind it's been under developement for awhile now, but the animations are crappy, graphics arn't top notch and the learning curve is steep.

I played it for awhile, like you I wanted an open world game that actually worked, it has many flaws but gets addiciting if you put forth the time and effort.

There arn't many out there, sadly, theres to many WoW clones and frankly I've never been able to get into that kind of MMO...

I agree OP! exactly what i've been looking for , for a very long time and I do searches weekly for something. Anything! but what you described are my exact qualifications too! too bad there is nothing.

I feel you man, I am also in the same boat.   Right now my hopes are on repop and Archeage.

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

Fallen Earth is worth a shot. Pretty unique combat system and fairly decent community. No loading screens as far as I've seen!

    source?

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

I have been looking since SWG pre-nge too. I'm not getting any younger and I'm starting to think I will be dead and buried before one comes along. :(

If Ryzom had housing I might be playing it today. Could say the same with Fallen Earth. In Eve Online I found the PVE mind numbing boring. What does that leave? Maybe Arche Age if it ever makes it out here.

Aion FTP is bringing housing in the next patch april 11th. I'm going to give that a try and see how far that game has come along even if its not a sandbox.

The Repopulation is basically a spiritual successor to SWG Pre-CU. You should check out their FAQ on the official website www.therepopulation.com

I think if anyone is looking for a new sandbox that will be in beta soon, you should look into Salem. The more that I find out about the game, the more excited I get about it. From the sounds of it, you'll be able to do anything you want.

    ^^^^^

I was interested in Salem until I saw perma death. (no thanks)  The poor graphics didn't help either.

That's my main interest in the game, to each his own I guess.

The problem I have with perma death is if I want to be a pure crafter I'm just putting a bullseye on my back. I don't see the fun in this. I understand why the pvp crowd would like perma death. The issue is I'm a crafter at heart so I will pass.
