I'm thinking that at this time, I'm not really looking for a MMORPG anymore because I'm not interested in stat/level/gear progression. I want a social (co-op) game, be it small or large group but definitely group-centric. I don't care if it's fantasy, sci-fi, or something else entirely but I don't want to be bogged down by progression. When I find a group of people I can relate to and want to play a game with I don't want to be barred from grouping just because I haven't put in the same amount of time as they have- I have to be able to pick it up and play with whoever I want whenever I want. Turn-based or real-time are both fine with me. I'm not interested in FPS, RTS, or MOBA (I've already got games in those genres I retreat to- looking for something else).
Is there anything else out there for PC?

Okay so you say that you're not looking for:
MMORPG, FPS, RTS, or MOBA
That only really leaves you with Online multiplayer Trading Card games lol.
...As far as group-centric MMORPGs are concerned, Final Fantasy XI comes to mind. It is almost impossible to solo in that game past level 20-25. Also FFXI has a bigger focus on community and adventure than just grinding out levels and people have made some very long lasting friendships in that game.
Yeah, figured it was a pretty tall order and I'll likely have to wait to try GW2 as the aesthetics in EQ2 rub me the wrong way and I'm tired of CoX (the only other MMOs I know of that use sidekicking/mentoring). It's not that I don't want to play a MMORPG, it's just that I want one where players actively group rather than prefer soloing and I don't want to be held back from grouping due to gear/level/etc. I could also care less about gear/loot, it just isn't important to me at all. Was hoping there'd be some kind of online multiplayer game like old-school Gauntlet. I saw Realm of the Mad God on Steam which looks similar but not sure how it actually plays.
MOBA- already have two I play.
FPS- already have one I enjoy.
RTS- closest I ever came to liking the genre was Populous for the Sega Genesis.
Realm of the Mad God is great to waste time in, but it purposely isn't as deep of an adventure as most MMORPGs.
After what you've said I still believe FFXI might be your best option; especially if you're the social type and find it easy to make friends. It will be a great time killer until Guild Wars 2. Just bear in mind, it is a very old game, but if you can look past graphics you will find a challenging, deep and very time consuming online role playing adventure with a very helpful and loyal community.
They have a 14 day free trial going. I really wish they would just make it Free to Play...
I'd say Realm of the Mad God or Guild Wars. Those are the only games that come to mind when you say group-based but no progression.
Even if it's fully finished, Terraria is a lot of fun. You can play with several friends in it's multiplayer. (Minecraft is too slow for me)
When you do it all, there are still mods!
If you have a couple of friends who are willing to try out new games. I'd also say Terraria or Minecraft. Very easy to set up a server.
I agree with Realm of the Mad God, you could also check out Spiral Knights, more hack and slash with some RPG elements, also there's D2 (D3 coming out soon) which has RPG progression, but Diablo has always done well with co-op gameplay. Similar games include Darkspore which has a queue system that will match you with other players automatically.

Thanks for the suggestions all- definitely gives me quite a lot to try out. Spiral Knights and Realm of the Mad God are F2Ps so I'm likely to try those first. I do have one RL friend that played FFXI so I might give it another try; what really turned me off initially was I hated the controls- the menus were a complete PITA and every time I went to move somewhere (keyboard and mouse) it would always be at an angle rather than straight in the direction I wanted to move. Not being able to jump over a wall a foot high was rather irritating.
-Terraria I actually picked up a 4 pack of during the holidays, haven't given it a real chance yet.
-GW1 I did a free trial of way back but really didn't have the time to play it. Nothing really bothered me about it and the more I've read on the boards the more interested I am to try out their PvP (even though I have plenty of games right now for that PvP itch).
Plug in a controller. It is so much better.
Alternatively you can switch to compact keyboard settings which uses WASD controls.
