EDITED AFTER TESTING TERA

I was prepared for a long weekend of testing and gaming.  I had my drinks set up, my food ready. Definitely was prepared for an all nighter atleast tonight.  I'll rate each category 1-10 with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best.  Reference for me - I've played nearly every game out on the market to date for the last 10 years.  I'm a full time gamer and am very experienced in online games especially MMO's.  Free 2 Play as well as Subscription games.

Any video game has atleast 1 - 2 hours to draw in gamers to get them hooked into the story, quests, world of the game. Upon writing this I spent a good 4 hours testing out the following.

What we tested:

1. Character creation Beserker and Archer - Rated 7

2. Character movement mechanics. - Ranged Rated 7  / Melee Rated 4

3. Cut scenes. - Rated 5

4. Graphics. - Rated 8

5. Questing. - Rated 3

Character Creation - The options were nice and well rounded, I didn't feel limited at all and I felt like I could make a totally unique character.  The only limitation I saw was eye color. Aside from that I enjoyed the character creation.

Character Movement Mechancis, combat system.  for a game built around this combat mechanic you won't be disappointed.  The movements feel natural and responsive, it defintely works well for this game for ranged characters.  Now for melee beserker I felt confined and limited. If a mob got agro'ed by my party member I had to chase it until it stopped moving before I could continue combat.  I can't imagine how horrific this would be in PVP.   Ranged Movement Combat system was great, Melee was a night mare and made me re roll very quickly as an archer.

Cut scenes were very well done, voice overs were fitting and quality. There were some odd random cut scenes within the quest lines that just seemed random and out of place.

Graphics in TERA were amazing. I loved the detail, and the vastness of the world I entered. The spell particles were beautifull and accurate.  By far the best part about TERA is how absolutely beautifull the graphics made the game.  Not many MMO's on the market currently can compete with how well done this part is.

Questing... As I referenced before, I have played "everything" when it comes to MMO's I've done countless hours, days, months added up in doing quests.  This is by far, within TERA, The absolute worst thing about this game.  The questing system, though linear, had no direction and was extremely frustrating.  You'd be asked to go do a quest half way across the map just to return to go back the other direction to do another quest which would in turn send you right back to where you started.  This was 2 hours of a headache I could have missed out on.

Summary - TERA is outstanding to look at, simply beautifull. The combat system is unique and fun. The characters offered an enoyable visual aspect to the game.  infact I could have really fallen for this game if it wasn't for the questing system.  There are free 2 play games out on the market that have amazing quest systems.  Simple, easy to understand, and directional.  If TERA removed its questing system completely and let me just fight mobs to get thru the game I could have handled that better then the current questing system.

Simply disappointed that after 4 hours of game play the questing system killed the game for me.  If the first 4 hours of the game is setting the tone for the rest of the experience there is no way on earth I could torture myself for months to get thru the quests in TERA.  If the questing system was over hauled I'd defintely be back.  But currently this game is not for me.

Good deal, I'll have a read when you guys are finished. As a suggestion you might dabble in both the Warrior and Lancer for tanking. They are night and day regarding playstyles.

Just not worth my time anymore.

zerker is only slow at the start, once you hit lvl 18 you can move while using all your charge skills. Once you get glyph that increase charge speed its even faster. If you hate quest i suggest you do what Deron_Barak do and only do main storyline quest and grind in between. The mob give very good exp it is total grindable. Sorry if you don't like the questing but honestly i never care about quest (play mostly grind heavy games) so having quest to me is a luxiry to lvl up with.

But i wish you good luck on finding something you enjoy ^_^

CVery thought out and balanced review King, I enjoyed it.

As Rex stated above I only do "yellow" quests under the strictest of circumstances (great reward) and usually stick to the story "red" quest for a few reasons:

One, I'm simply burnt out on most quests, in any game to be honest, and I'd rather explore and hunt (grind lol). Almost every game gives you tasks not quests and I'm bored of it I don't care how you package it or initiate it.

Two, because the majority of the side quests in TERA are indeed basic and are thrown in there for the "pure quester". Problem is pure questers also want engaging quests they can get with the other MMO options.

Luckily EME raised the xp per kill so doing the main quest, from level one, will see you progressing nicely. Now, you will find gaps where you need a level to get the next part of your story quest. I choose to find hard mobs (orange/red) and see if I can even take a few at a time. This is just the starter area mind you.

Later on when I'm doing the story, guild rep, faction rep and dungeon quests I think I'll be all set. That's just solo mind you. One of the "red quester" advantages is that it leaves xp space for lots of group play, dungeon or overland. I plan on enjoying my 1-60 experience.

Anywho, sorry about the rant it's just we agree about the questing and if I felt I had to do all the quests well I think I would take a break from MMOs in general. TERA gives me a choice and I'll take it :)

    Thanks again for the review

Just not worth my time anymore.

lol 1-20 is the worest, after that its meh, i grind 20-24 in sb, than quest for like 2hr till 26 and just litteraly go SM till 32 lol than turn in all repeats and quest till 37 than going t CR till idk when =X Personally me and my friend never cared about lvling, we view it as a work no matter what but the enjoyment after we hit certain lvl is what we seek and we  honestly don't mind working toward it =X

Just a little update -I gave it another go.  Friday I played a total of 7 hours.  Today tried a couple new characters and played another 6 hours.

(You might argue well I'm a GW2 fanboy so I wont compare this game to GW2, I will compare it to a game I've not played until today.)

I tried the advice about only doing the main story line quest line and grinding inbetween.  I tested the Sorcerer and made him a little siamese cat looking guy :P

I'm pleased that I gave it an honest shot and I found myself wanting to do chores around the house or something instead of bothering.. It felt like work instead of fun so I figured I'd stop torturing myself.  I tested another game I hadn't touched yet and compratively TERA made Swotor feel outstanding.  Not graphics but questing.  The graphics in TERA are breath taking but comparing a box + sub game with another both in the same market competing both provide similar things.

When I played TERA I mentioned my pro's / con's above.  Playing Swotor Directly afterwards made the same things stand out even more especialy the con's.  I know TERA is in beta but this being open beta I highly doubt they are going to change its grand driven with after thought quest system that much from now until launch.

If this helps someone great if not well it defintely helped me enjoy the rest of my weekend without missing more hair from wanting to rip it out due to playing the wrong thing.

Guess everyone like different thing, to me i use quest as means to a end never read them unless i specificly make a character to read through quests. So if i ever played SWTOR be the biggest wast of money coz i be pressing esc so fast to skip everything XD Hope you enjoy the next game you try ^_^

PSO2 was more fun for me then TERA has been despite being frustrated in not understanding anything. While TERA is an ok game, that's pretty much all it is. The whole "improved early play" changes were the biggest load of crap to begin with. A pointless waste of time prologue, moved 4 quest mobs, no additional quest or changing of quests. The in game community already is terrible. Just another niche game that I might have been interested in if there wasn't more interesting games coming soon.

Before the weekend was over I gave it one more shot.

3 attempts 3 different days for more then 15 hours of game play and I kept looking for something to draw me in.

Story line wasn't there in any of the characters I created.

Questing Already mentioned how even though it is "similar" to all the other MMO's it is the mechanic being the questing system that fails.  When on earth has any game forced you to manually go thru your quests and manually make each quest track each mob, not all at once mind you but one at a time...  If it was a conventional questing system it would have been fine but it contains random cut scnese that seem out of place and tons of reading which had no depth.  Probably lost in translation?

Knowing this is a Korean based game it makes sense that it has a GRIND feel to it with slapped on questing system.  SO I get that but then if I need to grind I'd like to enjoy killing mobs.  The one thing that prevented me from enjoying the combat system is the fact that every time I Casted anything or Attacked it anchored me to the floor and making me unable to dodge until the casting of skills or attacks was complete...

I gave TERA more then an honest attempt and the more I played it the more it made everything else on the market feel so much better.
