Stationary combat takes all of the action out of it. That's the number one killer for me, otherwise I find the game to be all right, a little boring, but I know that's just me.
If they had made a combat system allowing you to move around while swinging/casting, this game would be perfect, and might've got me to sub.
Op i totaly agree with you, im in exactly the same boat as you. the combat is what makes this game and people who say gw2 is the same kind are completely off the mark.
Looking forward to next week to get this show on the road. something new in a mmo at last.
I really wanna like TERA. But until about lvl 20, theres nothing I haven't seen already. I've seen pretty much all the game through Korean footage...and while a story does actually develop, the narration is pretty much on the level of Aion. Aka, there really isn't much storytelling.
Unless you are in a tightly knit guild who wanna own in OW PvP or enjoy pugging dungeons then I'm afraid TERA has little in the way of what to offer you in terms of endgame..at least at launch.
Comparing this game to Aion...at least Aion had larger more beneficial objectives via sieging. I keep getting the feeling TERA is trying to fill up that spot Aion left behind, but it never will since in some ways it is still inferior.
Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.
Tera is a beautiful game with interesting combat mechanics, though skills lock you into place (it bothered me that I couldnt fireball while moving), people say it gets really fun at level 20, sadly it's such a chore that I have to stop every 2-3 levels, not sure if I'll make it yet again. Really wish this was b2p or f2p though, would be a good time killer here and there.
Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.
TERA is gorgeous, but I start off the game killing mobs to collect 5 if this and 6 of that. Lazy. They couldn't be bothered to make engaging content. With Diablo 3 (Open beta has been great) and GW2 (friend played beta) looming with good questing, how will TERA hope to stand?
I'm on the same server, guild name is Epic...look me up some time or just war us....in-game name is Torn.

Tera claims to be an action mmo yet im stuck in place whenever i perform a dodge maneuver or a skill with a long animation..not very action orientated if you ask me.
Tried Tera again yesterday myself (my 3rd beta test) the art style and self rooting are jsut to big of a hurdle for me to overcome. Glad others like it and I hope the game does well cause I think Enmasse is a pretty great company. Would really love to see them do a Western Art flavored MMO in the future though.

I've been debating buying this game for the last two weeks. I have played in two previous events, in the first it struck me as meh while the second, after managing to get more involved in the gameplay once I reached a more decent level, I have to admit that I began to have fun. I''ve never faulted the graphics but getting past the beginner area.. Honestly, I began to loathe that place after a short time and it is one of the reasons for my mixed feelings.
So after reading up on the things still to be added I've come to the conclusion that it does have long term potential, and will be pre-ordering my box on Monday.
Fck me sideways until the cows come home. I'm getting fed up reading the same complaints about the self-rooting.
There's. a. reason. for. it.
The reason is it s stupid. In a true "action" combat game it makes no sense.
I could show you many other action combat games where you have to commit to an attack or think ahead and wait for an opening or risk getting the snot kicked out of you. The mob AI reacts the same too.

Yes, thats right the problem is with me. If it s me then why are so many people annoyed by it. It s simple, your beloved game is not loved by alot of people, people have opinions, if you don t like reading them, don t. It s pretty simple.

Heh, I could drop the game on a whim. Only game I've ever "loved" is in the past.
Just being fair and I can't stand people commenting on something they have no clue about. Quests can be changed, voice acting can be changed, armour etc etc etc.
But something that's as fundamental to TERA as in games like Monster Hunter and Dark Souls and on which the whole game is built upon cannot be changed just because a bunch of non-action gamers can't stand not being able to ice-skate bunny hop during combat.

First off , I m not a bunny hopper, I hate when people do it. If they have the ability to, well theres nothing I can do with it. All I m saying is, IMO, there shouldn t be self rooting. Nothing else to explain except, I, and many others hate it. It s not the reason alone I won t be playing this game, but it adds to the list of many.

And this is perfectly fine, you are totally entitled to not like the self rooting, my problem is when people say "it's not action cause it has self rooting" cause this is just wrong since lot of action game has self rooting.

On certain skills and mostly for ranged classes. Come on, you can name them. Many of the skills you can direct with your mouse WHILST IN ANIMATION. Others you can choose to glyph them for more mobility at the risk of lowering your damage output.
IMO, there should be self rooting because that's how all the classes were balanced against each other. Not via cooldown and stunlocks but by tactics and knowing when and how to use a skill.
"I m not a bunny hopper, I hate when people do it."
Check out Dragon Nest and tell me that isn't bunny hopping. Another MMO in the horizon will suffer from the same. It's inevitable due to how the whole system is implemented.

Which is what exactly?
TERA claims to have "real action combat", which IMO is fast paced and fluid combat with lots of movement. Self Rooting slows down the pace, makes it less fluid and restricts movement.
As many others have said, its not the ONLY reason I dont like this game, there are several others including the very very generic setting, the lack of immersion, the lack of any story that draws you in, the poor quality music, the overly shiny child like graphics, the quests that pretty much ONLY consist of "Kill 10 X" etc etc. I could go on.
Adding self routing is just another failure in a sea of fail for this game.

I found your review very helpful. Great job. I was on the fence about trying this one and looking for more information from a seasoned gamer. I have a question, I used to not ever think to ask this until SWTOR made it an issue. How is the UI and Inventory? Is their plenty of room for abiilities to be managed easily and quickly? This would be a big deal in a game where you have to keep moving or get owned.
Ballerinas are always on their toes. Why don't they just get taller ballerinas?
I'm still trying to figure out what the beef is with this game. Mechanically, it works great, even on my older rig. Esthetically it's beautiful. Granted it's an open beta, the population is there, chat is a little immature but I assume that will end when the kiddies aren't allowed to subscribe since they're being punished for not doing thier home work. As for the game play, it's the first MMORPG I did not have to point and click. There is a wide variety of classes to choose from, some easy, some more difficult. So maybe our collective jaded opinions based on so many fialures will never let us have fun anymore? When is enough, enough? Cripes, D3 and Guild Wars are being bashed and they're not even released yet. FOr some here, there will never be a great game anymore unless you pick up EQ, come on already.
I think a big problem with Tera, is the structure of the game itself. It s not sure if it wants to be pvp orientated or pve. On most accounts, people think of it as a pve mmo. Now alot of people are the OWPvP is amazing. No rewards but it s fun. That will boom at first, then become owned by a few guilds. Most people know this happens on most, if not all factionless MMOs. That said, I swear I read they re releaseing BGs as well. That will, in itself destroy some of the OWPvP. I know alot of people will say. no way, but it always does. I don t know, I think Tera just has a shit ton of hurdles to climb, and it s not going to make it, in the long run.

The ui is minimalistic and very custmizable you can move/scale everything.
The inventory is a pretty standard inventory you start with 40 slots inventory, once you reach the first city you'll get the first expansion for free (every expansion is 8 slots) then you can buy the other (with in game money) or unlock them by getting some achievement.
About the abilities managment i don't think i understand what you mean

I think a lot of this is how you approach a game. Like many here, I've played almost every MMORPG since UO, have I liked them all, of course not. But I'm willing to give alll games a fair shot before proclaiming doom, and I mena fair, not aan hour or two, not getting to level 10, but playing for a decent amount of time. By that, I mean at least a month or so, shoot, you get that much time if you purchase it. Some have said this game really shines past level 20, I have yet to get past level 12, so maybe it does, maybe it doesn't, but I'm going to at least play that long to make my decision. Seemingly, I'll play Guild Wars 2, why not? Never tried it, saw a few videos, read a ton of pro's and con's on this site, but ultimately I make my own decisions for after all, it is my perception that matters, not what a poster writes, good or bad.
Only thing wrong with TERA is early questing because you have to follow the quest till you get about level 20+ then the world starts to open up and you can do more things like dungeons, instances, world bosses and bams. Everthing else in TERA is much better then any other game on the market. There has never been a better pvp game released since Lineage 2.
I went to Gamestop this morning and fully paid off my preorder for TERA. I will be playing Beserker on Valley Of Titans PVP Server and enjoying every minute of it.
You think TERA and L2 have the best pvp in an MMO, have you ever heard of DAoC? DAoC is still renowned as the best pvp game in mmo history. It still draws a crowd of 200k+ at the last i checked and still rakes in enough money to not need to go F2P. Not sure why alot of people think open world ganking is fun but it's not. Going around with your guild and killing someone whos farming is boring. Running into another guild while there taking on a BAM and whiping them with ease is BORING. Taking on a guild in RvR and beating them because your better on an even playing field, that's fun, that's what get's my blood pumping. I did OWPvP in WoW for 4 years and not once past Vanilla did my heart race. It was either me getting ganked or me ganking and it was BORING. I had more fun doing the god awful BGs then i did roaming stranglethorn or silithus looking for a brawl. I hate OWPvP for 2 reasons, it breed bad pvpers who love nothing more then an easy kill, and lowbie gankers. Lowbie gankers are the worst scum in MMO history, seeing someone 50 levels below you then deciding "oh it would be fun to camp his corpse" how can you call that fun. With OWPvP that's all that happens. I give tera 2 months before OWPvP is non-existant between high end guilds same as in L2 and WoW.

Yep and thats fair enough. My wife and I, and a few guildies from other games did make it past 20. We wanted to see what the fuss was about. We all, said nope, not a game our guild will even play. I think 1 of about 10 of us thought they ll try it at release. I agree give it a shot, I myself would rather, take that $60 X 2 and take the wife out for dinner, and a movie. I can undestand people liking the game, we re all different, but to me it s really nothing special, before or after level 20.
