I'm confused about a few things, first of all Thank you OP for your post, its rather well thought out. Secondly, people, its his opinion, you can't say its not "factual". So to everyone whos saying "you can't say that its not true" it is true to him, and its his opinion post, sorry thats how this works.
I'm curious about how everyone is upset with the questing...
Did everyone get heated about RIFT having the exact same questing?
How about WoW when it came out, having the exact same quest structure as DAoC?
Why is it SUDDENLY now that an action MMO comes out, everyones harshing on the linear quest design, which EVERY SINGLE GAME HAS!
This makes no logical sense.
Because they are purposely looking for something to complain about. I mean look at their post history, you will see the same comment on various threads.
I never understood why someone would post SO MUCH about a game they hate SO MUCH.
I for one had no expectations of Tera. Had no intentions on playing it, but decided to give the open beta a shot. I ended up pre-ordering the next day.
Why? Because for ME it was fun. I KNEW what i was getting into, as far as quest-driven content. I had no qualms about that.
I knew it would start off slow, i mean it IS a MMO with a progression purpose. No problems with that either.
I HATE asian-style gfx, yet the exciting gameplay made me forget all about the cheesey art direction. The environments were stunning. The overall gfx were amazing, like I said I am just not into the western-influenced art direction.
I ran the first instance as a Priest, it was the most fun I ever had healing in ANY mmo, reminded me of my first time in a MMO healing, in that it was all new and exciting. For once I was not staring at health bars alone. I was actually moving, timing spell casts, positioning my aoe heals, etc etc. The pace of combat REALLY picks up at later levels.
I joined a pug and killed some BAMS. Now the Basilisks are technically BAMS, but they are a lot smaller than the other BAMS in the game. Never-the-less I had a blast, lost about an hour chatting with my group and chain pulling, reminded me of my eq/eq2 days.
I linked up with a great guild called Fate. It is a mmo, and the whole point is to be social somewhat, so I figure might as well find a nice home early. I found the guild quests to be a nice addition, and the possibility of Tera politics has us all excited.
I joined in on some PVP. Yeah I went outlaw, i got ganked a few times, and got my revenge on them back. What started off as 5 minutes defending newbies so they can cross the bridge and get to leveling ended up a war between 3 guilds. Next thing you know 5 minutes turned into an hour, which then turned into 3 hours. Reminded me of all the fun I use to have in Southshore/TM in WoW. Was it pointless PvP? Some may say yes, but to the others we helped defend so they can go leveling it was definitely not pointless, and on top of that we made some good friends.
Does this mean that is all Tera has is pointless PvP? No, there is a political system, and the ability to hold land. There are dynamic events planned where players can jump in and defend the world against invading BAMS, some as epic as raid status. There are battlegrounds in the works.
The devs actually listened to the community and replied. When the starting area was complained about by the masses, they reworked it. When the testers said the BGs were not ready, they held them back to rework them. I'd rather wait and get something done right, then a PVP BG that is beyond repair, SWTOR ILLUM anybody?
Now everything is not picture perfect. I still hate the character models for some of the races.
I have only experienced a small portion of play, we will see how the rest holds up.
I hate the fact there is only one starting area. I am an altaholic, I like different starting areas, and a variety of places to adventure in.
All in all I had a great time open beta weekend. I experienced a lot of the same feelings I had back in the days of playing some of my favorite MMOs like eq, and everyday I would wake up in anticipation to what Tera holds for me next.
Instead of argueing with people I rather remind everyone that it looks like it is going to be a great year for MMOs. I will be playing Tera and GW2 instead of sitting at home on a forum bashing a game for no productive reason at all. I hope you all enjoy whatever game you plan on playing, good luck.
Thanks for the review! The "after 20" comments are because if additional activities not available until about that level as well as the "opening" of the zones.
If you don't like or care what those things bring that's fine but fit most it's a big plus.
However, a game should grab you on the first 20 levels, not after. Aion had this same issue. Everyone kept saying wait till 25+ and it gets better. Why should I waste my time playing if it doesn't get better till later? Seriously, you could literally auto ding a new character to 25 in both of these games and the learning curve wouldn't change nor the gameplay. Bad design, if you ask me.
I agree, if a game can't get you interested in the first few levels, it's a tough sell to say it will eventually get better. First, better doesn't mean fun or good. Higher level doesn't fix UI problems. Finally, in the past, people have implied you have to play the whole game before you can tell which is a total load of you know what.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience

FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."

the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"

yes, this seems very strange to me also. the majority talks like questing is the greatest thing since Sliced Bread 1.0, and that it somehow makes games less grindy, etc. etc.....
all the sudden, Tera comes out and everyone non-stop complains about its quests, which seem the same to me as quests in any other MMO (i've always hated them in EVERY game).
makes me wonder if it is indeed BECAUSE of the "action" combat.
action games were never big on questing, as its done in MMO games. yet everyone knows this is an MMO.
Why do people like you roll on pvp servers...you are a pver...like it or not...you would have enjoyed a pve server more.
I rolled on a pvp server because I enjoy PvP, actually this is what I enjoy the most in MMORPGs, I don't see where you got that I'm a pver from.
yeah that was a crazy post. lol
you talked quite a bit about your PVP experiences, even mentioned how you went outlaw from it on purpose.
probably cuz he is the typical(?) ganker mentality that likes to exploit people who are killing monsters by hitting them in the back when they are almost dead, and can't stand to hear somebody giving others a fair chance, to have a fair fight with them (assuming you were attacking people of your level or higher).
BTW as long as we are talking about RIFT and TERA what the hell happened to the nexus events that were all over the patch notes for TERA, basically TERA was stealing RIFT's rifts and then we get in game and they aren't there.
Kinda makes me wonder if some threats about intellectual property rights were tossed around behind closed doors, I mean after NCSoft fiasco, all Enmasse needs is another theft of intelectual property rights filed against them.

The 20 first lvls are more one long tutorial for the completely NEW player that hasn't been gaming alot of years as most of us here have done. Plus that the games picks up later on is a carrot for teh rest of us to progress further. But they seem to lack the ability to grasp this.

Not sure if they are back in or not at this point.

enmasse can when they cater to the carebears, just like blizz did with wow, just like whoever made rift did with...rift.

The Nexus events are in the high level zones. Nexuses are like raids where anyone nearby can join if they want to. It's part of the endgame in TERA.

Im not going to talk about Tera, but I do want to respond to this point. Every other MMO you named has some kind of variation in quests even if the delivery was the same.
In Tera, on the starting area, not only was the delivery the same, not only was the quests all but identical, they often had you killing the same things over and over. Ther trees dudes. The Deer. The little critters. Again. And again.
After 20 when you get dungeons and BAM's this lessens. Till then, its the most repeditive questing I've ever experienced and I played the hell out of Rift and WoW and DAoC.
Tera has plenty of stregnths, questing is not one of them.
Currently playing myself (up to lvl18). I am enjoying the combat; though, I don't think it's going to be enough to keep me here. The crafting is one of the main things that are going to drive me away. I love crafting and being self suf. Seems like with all the gathering I do, I still end up dropping more money than I have with mats only available from vendors.
