Alright, now I am a bit confused. Who is saying that WoW is literally sitting on a throne and needs to be defeated, like some kind of raid boss? I thought it was mutually understand that being a 'wow-killer' was basically referring to either taking away a majority of it's subs, or beating it in terms of sub numbers. I didn't realize people mistook that phrase for game of thrones.
Again you seem to be applying literal meanings here, to things that are not meant in a literal sense.
Maybe they do mean it in LITERAL sense? Prove to me that Anet employees are not just outside of blizzard HQ, swords and axes in hand, ready to attack and de-throne Blizzard permentaly!
(ok, now I am just getting silly, I admitt that)
i loled... i could just imagine.. the blizzard headquarters raid...
A team leader has to talk big, especialy when in the context of forbes. Who wants to invest in someone shooting for anything but number 1? Seriously, would you personaly invest money in a company that isnt looking to be the top of their field? I know, they arnt looking for investers at the moment.. but can you say it will always be that way?
Also, on the flip side, this should stop the people that keep whining that since there is no sub they have no reason to support or improve the game.
Do they? Can you point to any scientific study which support that a such talk is the "best"?
Dude's got brass ones fer sher. I hope GW2 can do it. If it does, though, I hope the industry learns its lesson. Love what GW2 will be, but I don't want to see clones of it for the next 8 years.
Oh there are going to be clones for sure. No manner what game finally takes the #1 spot, most AAA developers will attempt to cash in by copying it. It's just how the industry works. AAA developers have to present a sure thing to their investors and publishers so there isn't a lot of room for experimentation. Mostly indie developers attempt something different. Unfortunately indie guys rarely have enough capital to fully realize their dream and we get half-assed games with a lot of potential which rarely gets realized.
If that were true, why aren't we seeing massive amounts of super mario clones in the single player market? Seriously, the MMORPG market is completely fucked up and that's a large reason why GW2 is needed.
I'm not sure how they can compare the self to a sub game... I think the bigger question would be how many buy e next expansion pack. It'll show a much more accurate figure on how many people are still playing. As there is no sub numbers

Wrong attitude for a fan, correct attitude for a CEO. A CEO (or a developer) should be ambitious, even if that same ambition may harm him in the long term.

That's an excellent point.
That is a very good point. But I have a feeling GW2 will go far. I think they'll be very successful.
GW1 did well enough and that wasnt even a real mmo. Not well enough, but it did extremely well. With GW2 they've really given a huge amount of thought, and they've take serious "risks" which I dont consider risks. I feel doing it the same as everyone else is the risk. I feel what they are doing is nearly a sure thing.
I guess they feel the same way. Some are saying its arrogance. But really, if you arent excited about your game, why should I be? And they seem very excited. Not that fake kind of hype excitment. The real kind. The kind of satisfaction where they know they've made something special. At least they seem to very much think so. I cant wait to find out why.

Side scrollers are not as popular as they used to be but back during their prime, there were a lot of SMB clones. Sonic was probably the most famous one.
The MMO market is fucked because most of the developers refuse to take a chance. MMOs require a lot of money and the companies who can pull it off cannot take huge risks as they have investors and publishers to deal with. So they have to create games a close to the standard as possible and unfortunately, right now that standard seems to be "copy as much of WoW as you can." Indie developers tend to take more risks and try something new but because MMOs require some serious financial backing, the indie guys usually cannot cut it.
This is why I'm so eagerly awaiting GW2. I view this game as one of the best attempts to change the current industry standard. We have a talanted AAA developer with MMO experience and a solid understanding of the industry and a publisher that is content with letting the developer do their thing. It's a winning formula that is incredibly rare in the MMO genre and if it fails, it can potentially stangate this genre even longer.

New Super Mario Bros sold 26.88 million copies. It was released in 2006 though. However, even back then, we didn't see massive cloning attempts.
Edit: Also Sonic platform games are sufficiently different compared to the Mario games to not be called a clone. They feel completely different when you play them.

Tetris and Space invaders were before my time, so if you can, I would appriciate if you could educate me about how they impacted their market in regard to cloning.
So three expansion packs at 50.00 each is 150.00 a year maybee versus 150.00 sub (roughly 2 TOR 6 month subs).....So less packs(content) equals bigger savings....I like the incentive for the GW2 model to pump out quality expansions...It will be interesting......F2P can hug a nut. Its just a hail mary for a dying game.....On a side note.....I'd also like to know if there is a corelation between frugal people and a disorder that I've seen in a few friends of mine that I call GamingADHD..... These people jump from game to game so much that F2P is their saviour.....They couldn't afford their disorder any other way....But that is another post....Cheers
It's one thing to beat WoW in the current market e.g. WoW's subs fall to 1m and your MMO X has 2m subs. In this scenario MMO X has more subs than WoW but it never achieved what WoW achieved. Only by getting say 15m subs can an MMO beat WoW's achievement.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

Dont forget Cash Shop that will make this game the most expensive F2P game ever...
People are going emo and trolling how WOW is boring and it is all about the gear etc.... You have to grind, do boring raids only tto get purple items...... WOOOOOOOW !!!!!
Now the new era came and all that you want is just a click from your credit card.....
So what they want and will not settle for anything other than, is a WOW killer?
Mike O'Brien said just the opposite of that in a recent interview linked in another thread. So no, they are not thinking they will be the "WoW Killer." Only Blizzard can kill WoW.
I was referring to this.
Mike O'brien:
"We were number two to World of Warcraft with Guild Wars, now we want to beat them. We’ll be satisfied when Guild Wars 2 is the most successful MMO"
And how do they consider a non-sub-based game as being number two to the number one Sub based game?
Agreed until they use the same payment method as Blizzard i refuse to consider them in the same class, not saying that it makes them better or worse but I'm not going to compare a game you buy once to one that you had to buy and then have an added commitment to by subbing monthly.
Anyone know how GW counted subs in the first place? Because it would irk me a bit if say i was counted as one of the people who made them number two to wow when all I really did was buy the game and one extra expansion I think I spent less time in GW than any single "mmo" I ever purchased and spent about an equal amount of time playing those two perfect world mmo's.

i loled... i could just imagine.. the blizzard headquarters raid...
“We’re in it to win it this time,” said O’Brien. “We were number two to World of Warcraft with Guild Wars, now we want to beat them"
Somehow this sounds like a recipe for disaster....
Just stick to making your game great and leave this stupid wow killing attitude outside.
Rawr.
You should divide this thread and other GW2 threads into gangs and fight it out when the servers go live, whoever wins was right no matter what!
...So you've joined the dark side now?
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
I don't know what their chances really are, but I do think if any game stands a chance of it, it is this one.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Do they? Can you point to any scientific study which support that a such talk is the "best"?

*shivers*
Oh dear ... this can not end well. They invoked the curse of the WoW killer.
This is the mmorpg industry equivalent of accidentily spilling blood on a long forgotten, ancient indian burial site in the middle of a dark forest.
Everyone knows you should never do that!

Well Mr.O`brien you can quite your crusade cause GW2 failed to be close to WOW and the game is still not on the shelves.
Even in worst case scenario that will happen 99% you ll be even 2nd in biggest fail cause that place is for SW:TOR.
