Oh dear ... this can not end well. They invoked the curse of the WoW killer.
This is the mmorpg industry equivalent of accidentily spilling blood on a long forgotten, ancient indian burial site in the middle of a dark forest.
Everyone knows you should never do that!

"As for the World of Warcraft-killer slogan that has been bandied about in the press, O’Brien said “nothing is going to kill WoW other than WoW. "
So I wouldn't worry too much about the curse. It doesn't apply here when Mike clearly knows about it .
Stating that "nothing is going to kill WoW other than WoW" seems to contradict the "other" statement ... but yes, it is a powerful chant and used in the past to avert this ancient evil. But did Mike say it four times in quick succession while looking in a polished steel mirror? Everyone knows that is the only way it works ...
As discussed earlier on in this thread, "beating WoW" does not necessarily mean being a "WoW Killer". There is a HUGE difference. I am surprised you don't see it.
Like mentioned before, beating WoW can simply mean generating more sales and gaining greater popularity for GW2 in the months and years ahead than WoW. It is definately a possibility.
What won't happen is WoW dying completely because of GW2. WoW can survive and can still be called a success even if it loses 5m subs over the next years as it just means WoW still has 5m people subscribed per month which is still a staggering amount of subs lol.
As other has pointed out: has anyone ever used the term "WoW killer" and really meant that they refered to WoW shutting down, or have they only used the term to imply a dethroning and nothing else?
Can't wait for the NDA to lift and people can come back to reality.
Can't wait untill the NDA has lifted and I can go to other game forms and say "You pay $15 a month for that piece of crap ?"
Doesn't change the fact that all of those TOR haters who laughed at those fanboi antics are now in the same boat, behaving in the same fanboi manner, preaching the second coming. I'm excited about most aspects of the game, but it in no shape or form looks like it will revolutionize the genre. Yes, there are some nice changes and additions, but it's still a themepark, it still goes for a more cartoony effect just like WoW. There are still levels and classes and many of the other tried and true paradigms of MMO history. My only real concern about the game is the combat system and that it will become annoying to me since I'm not a fan of action / twitch play. My other smaller concern is how scalable are the events really? I haven't heard anything about people actually being able to solo or duo an event if no one else is around at 3am in the morning.
As the poster said, some people really do need a reality check.
I love how when people consider the next biggest MMOs after WoW, they never include the Asian market.
Also, considering how often players have heard "this game will kill WoW" and seen that fail, why would anyone throw down that gauntlet? Sure GW2 has an excellent chance at becoming huge, but what WoW has done is a fluke. Why not wait and see what happens first...?
*using killing WoW as a general term for being more successful, not actually driving it out of the market
Im sure it has nothing to do with the fact that the company is bigger in Asia and that they actually have the best chance of being bigger than WoW...
If Guild Wars 2 can top 3 million in America before the end of the year I have little doubt they will top 10 million worldwide before the first expansion.

And yet what exactly do we mean by "dethroning"? For me it means GW2 becoming the standard which other future mmorpgs will be compared to. I can certaintly see that happening. Going by that definition GW may very well be....
This is a sign, that they are really, really statisfied with their work. All previews have been extremely positive so far. All the ideas they put into GW2 are great.
They just put an end to that "if we get something between 500.000 to 1.000.000 subscribers, we are ok, we don't want to compete with WoW."-argument.
I just like it.
Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.
This article is really old, but still shows how invested they are in their products. They want to produce a high quality game and want to create something that is comparable to traditional MMORPGs. They are shooting for an audience as big as WoW, but not to entering direct competition with the WoW crowd. These games are just too different in playerbase and game design.
It's real simple people. If the topic of conversation for the next 7 years is "well GW2 did this, and that and why doesn't your game have it" or even the dreaded "GW2 sucks and has ruined MMORPGs and the industry, blah blah blah" than it will have "beaten" WoW even if Wow is still kicking with no end in sight. Which I hope it is. EQ and UO are still alive and kicking and they never had the amount of players WoW has. So, it's not about players it's about how the game affects the industry and goes beyond it into pop culture. Only time will tell.
you have to kill the king before you can wear the crown.
Umm, news flash, No need to kill the king when he's already dieing of old age x-D
I think the king will be reborn. The worst problem for A-net would be if MoP is released the same month. What if Blizzard is planning that? Not that Im a big WoW fan anymore...But the games popularity is a fact. And competing with a WoW-expansion launch is a nightmare for any company.

True, but I use to be a WoW adict... yeh I admit it... However, it will take much more than this exp[ansion to bring me back after almost a year. I honestly don't think I can go back, I've been cured and seek not to be adicted again :-)
I also think that the reasons that caused WoW to lose people is not that they needed more content, but rather that the content was too much like fast-food at mcDonalds. It was dumbed down and unbalanced after a while so a new xpansion won't change that entirely. I usually say that no mess is not made over night, and as long as it took them to make the mess they made is just as long as it would take for them to fix it... If that's even possible. But again, this is my personal feelings towards it ...

Nah not gonna bring up the curse .
Looking forward to EQL and EQN.
I like his approach.

it was posted to the Forbes site 2 days ago, 04/23/2012 - thats not really old

Mike O'Brien said something similar in an interview a while back. He expanded on it in the recent Forbes one.

13 pages just to say that this is ONLY 100% without a doubt just the company CEO pimp'n it for Forbes?
You gotta set your sights to the top and tell investors/players/media you aim to be BOSS.
I'm sure internally to Anet and NCSoft they have much more realistic projections.
It's not unrealistic to aim for spot number one. In fact, everyone should in order to sell a product.
