If their was ever a wait-and see mmo, TSW would be it.
I am trying hard to put aside Funcoms reputation after Age of Conan's launch, and I'm doing somewhat a good job of it. After all Funcom should have learned from their mistakes. HOWEVER, from watching the little bit of footage of game play, trailers and Youtubs that I could find on the net, I'm finding very little. And mostly redundant stuff. From this I could only make assumptions and own opinions.
I can't help but to think that the zones will be small, story driven, voice acting and set up to be like larger Dynamic Events. I'm trying so hard to give Funcom another chance, but I would really guess that the world will be full of paths and invisible walls. Funcom may very well have NOT learned their lesson.
ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND, that Marketing videos and real time game play are two different things.
Their is no reason to jump into TSW other than being board of what we currently have for mmo's. I see nothing wrong with waiting a few weeks after launch to get the REAL STORY FROM THE REAL PUBLIC. This all depends on how spontaneous we are. I'm somewhat spontaneous on a lot of things in life. But in video games their is more at stake than money, it's your time....I'm sick of loading an mmo, sitting up in my chair, creating a character, learning a few cool abilities, then blowing off life, ignoring friends for three weeks only to say " hay this game sucks ".
I don't know about you, as we are all different. But I'm not looking for an inter active story book. I can only play an mmo where their is a very rich community based mmo. One that Guild members are active, friends count. An mmo that you get a few friends together and ride off in the distance to do a far away quest, even if the prize is not all that spectacular, but fun in grouping and working together. Dynamic events don't cut it. It's very lonely to play Rifts with strangers that don't talk and five minutes later your on your own again, and have never chatted with your auto-party.
As much as I like the theory behind TSW, I can't help that the mechanics are trash....I would be more likely to be spontaneous with Guild Wars 2 than The Secret World. Maybe I'm too much old school but I don't like solo auto group.

No one should ever buy a game until they've played it, period. The entire genre would be much better off if they didn't.
Uhm... if a game is good enough to make you enjoy creating a character, learning cool abilities and is good enough to make you ignore your friends for 3 weeks, it's already worth the $50 purchase price. Most games for sale today barely last a week.
For example - i quit both TOR and RIft after about a month of play, but both games entertained me for at least 2-3 weeks. So no regrets. The nice thing about subscription based MMOs is that if you don't like it after the first month, you don't need to keep paying.
Also, based on what you're saying about "dynamic events don't cut it" and wanting community, i would say that GW2 is definitely NOT the game for you. Just read the user experience reviews - the best PvE parts of the game are dynamic events and they're done mostly with everyone playing solo and never talking to each other. For me, dynamic content is a turn-on, so this kind of thing gets me more interested in GW2, if for you it's a turn-off, I would look to other games like EQ2, Vanguard, AoC or even WoW.
TSW is not really dynamic event based and given that the game is aimed at a more mature and skilled market, it's likely to have a better community. However, the fact that it lacks any large-scale content (requiring more than 5 people), it may end up with a lack of usual guild-based social structure. Hard to say at this point.

For me this is a "Take all my money Funcom" -game.
Everything they've said and written about the game match what I'm looking for in a MMORPG.
Sure if they don't deliver what they've said it can be an ugly suprise but I have faith ;J
"Take all my money" means you got the lifetime sub?

i am never careful.
i buy games that look good and stop playing the moment they prove my hopes wrong

It has been announced officialy, so it's up to you if you decide to believe it.. but each zone will be around 4 times the size of an Age of Conan zone. This is just for the outdoor questing areas and doesn't include the hubs and Dungeons/Open PvP area.
However, there will only be 4 zones at launch if I am correct ( someone feel free to correct me on this, but I think thats right )
I try to keep it to myself but I do hold high hopes for this game. Will be nice to see how it feels in the Beta this weekend
Yeah I got the full shebang, even the iniate weapons.
After hyping this game for years it was really a no-brainer. Wasn't thinking about "getting bang for buck" just wanted to support funcom and buy the game with all the goodies. I was going for boxed CE first but they didn't have one ;/
Still I think I got quite a lot for 215$'s instead of spending 150$'s on a boxed CE :J
I just got my key from Gamespot, cool it's only Templar though as i was going to be one if i got the game.
i like you, im not one of these people who say im not gona buy mmo for just free month, why not? it servers longer than single player games wich is mainly finished in 8 hours and mainly cost more money aswell.
i do also buy whatever game looks good to my eyes and play as much as i want and then quit and buy another one.
That's me too. And for this game the price will be worth it for me to just explore some of the locations they have built even if I don't like the combat or endgame.
But I respect the fact that I have a good income so i can be that way. It is part of the reason I try to provide objective feedback shortly after released or NDA lift for people that are on a strict budget.

Even if this is like Swtor (1-2 months) I'd be happy to fork over money for it. Here is hoping its better than that but I wont hold my breath.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
and even if funcom only successed to deliver starting zone like tortage in conan hell i would pay just for that
i actually still wonder when and why that changed.
i mean... "back in the good old days" (C=64, amiga, that generation) we actually played games to have fun. sure, we bragged about it when we completed a game before our friends did, or did something cool that we haven't done before, but that was NOT the main force that made us play
nowadays it seems like kids play games so they can show off with their achievements and killstats on school.
we had adidas and stuff like it to show off in our days, so that's nothing new, coolest clothing or whatever... but hell. what are kids doing for fun those days?
are their any left who actually play for fun? or maybe for fun AND bragging rights? that would count too hehe :>

I'm just not convinced this game is anything more than another EQ/WoW clone with a new gimmick or two.
I really like the whole build you own skill deck thing, but at the same time I've seen that before (in UO/SWG) and it always leads to cookie cutter builds.
I like the modern setting with the myth/lore/horror aspects etc., zero complaints there it is more unique and interesting.
But beyond that....
There is just nothing that excited me and nothing that looks any different than any game since 2004.
meh. if it is as good as Conan it will be worth the money to me.
i'm not a real good gauge though, i still havne't played a major MMo that i just thought was terrible and a complete rip-off.
i too am one of those though who only played SWTOR, Rift, and others for a month or two yet felt like i got my money's worth.
I can't speak for all the zones, but the first couple are a nice size and wide open. I remember wishing I could steal a bicycle or something. It's made on the AoC engine, so it is zone based, but they made it fit with the setting. Something AoC failed to do. It doesn't feel like a bunch of disconnected, claustraphobic boxes. There is a main story, but the quest system allows you to follow it at your own pace. There were also little stories, adventures and investigations that you get into scattered around.
It's a different game, something new, mixed with a little old. I found it very refreshing.
I like Funcom a lot and pre-ordered the game too, didn't get the lifetime though as in the end, it's still a themepark game and it has a bigger focus on PvP than i like in my gaming, so I'm not sure how close it'll be to my "ideal MMO". I'm telling you though, the day they announce AO2, i'm buying the lifetime sub, the stuffed leet doll, the digital upgrade pack featuring in-game Yalm replica and anything else they have for sale. And i'll buy it all on the announcement alone

Glad I'm not the only crazy person here 8)
That's how I look at it too. If I pay 50 bucks for an mmo, even if I only play it 5 hours a week for the free month and drop it, it still is cheeper entertainment by the hour by far than say going to the movies, or the bar, or a show or whatever.
How to Use There, Their and They're.. Oh forget it...
As much of a fan I am for this game I also have to remember to go in here with an open mind about TSW. It's hard sometimes for consumers who have a stake of interest in a title will support and/or disagree. Titles like SWTOR have made me step back and take a look at the things I purchase personally.
I still plan on playing The Secret World at launch. I have my pre-order and all that good stuff. Right now for me it's all about getting into the beta and experiencing everything for myself. Get a hands on to feel out how they are coming along, what types of bugs and hiccups I run into. What features I feel might be neccassary for me to really enjoy my time.
If those things are missing or lacking, then I have to take a second consideration on playing TSW. I know with EA involved and Funcom themselves having to redeem themselves to many that anything can really go at this point. The game can be awesome or it can really, really suck.
I won't be afraid to call it as I see it. It's really about people understanding what a game is about. What features it does and doesn't have and what type of support the game seems to have. From there you make your own decision. It's perfectly fine to like more than just one game or MMO.
Just keep it real with yaself and you shouldn't be caught out there like many were with SWTOR..
PM before you report at least or you could just block.
Got my key yesterday. Can't wait to try it out later tonite .
Haha, I am with you. No risk no fun, eh? XD

Thanks for looking out for me OP. Without your vast knowledge and experience playing TSW I would have rushed out and spent all of my money. I am way way too irresponsible and could in no way form my own thoughts and opinions on this game. I am just a sheep and am glad people like you are playing the shepard.
Please continue to look out for us poor dumb suckers who would be lost without your vast knowledge pool. Thanks again.
I was genuinely interested in this game. I liked the no class, no levels, and modern day setting, but then I saw that EA is involved and I refuse to give them any money so I'm not even going to bother with the open beta. I don't care if this is the greatest game of all time, I will not buy it.
