Torchlight 2 = Diablo 3 with Diablo 2's Awesome

ArEfArEf Member Posts: 233

Pretty much the title.

I got into the Torchlight 2 beta today and christ this game is good. Diablo 3's combat system was fun, but Torchlight 2 takes that and just runs with it.

I was playing an Elite (hardest difficulty) Hardcore Engineer with a cannon, shooting cannonballs all over the place. Weak enemies went flying with a few cannonballs, their ragdolls launching off the edge of the screen, whilst stronger enemies sometimes required me to trade a few hits with them in order to down them.

After that, though, I came across the boss of the little dungeon (which was randomised and I found it by summoning a ghost who asked me to avenge his death). He just didn't want to die. I was trying to kite him so that he didn't basically two shot me when I ran through a field of corpses. He used his resurrect spell on them, they trapped me and I was VERY swiftly despatched. RIP little engineer. :(

But I heard in order to have fun, you can't have talent points. I mean, surely I can't have fun building my character how I want to build it instead of how a designer thinks it should be built, right?

How does comparing one game at the hardest difficulty and the other at the easiest difficulty even make sense?

Im glad its good, though. Ille be buying both :). Im a sucker for those type of games.

Exactly! Most of the skills aren't even included yet, but god it's good.

That's a fair issue. The trouble is that one game allows me to choose my difficulty and the other doesn't. If they don't want me to make a comparison off of that, then they should both lock me in or both offer choice.

I don't think your title has anything to do with what you've actually written...

Same! Can't wait for both games to come out. I have to say, do some people even want to play games anymore? Or just b*tch about every new game that releases. In the end, you don't have to play it at all. There are so many games to choose from. We play games for fun, right? If it's not fun, choose another one.

The op is correct on so many levels. D3 is fun but Torchlight 2 is way so much more fun and better. Got into beta and couldn't stop playing. It is just an amazing game. Matt Uelmen's music just super amazing yet again. The envorinments are really nice and the fluid gameplay is great. TL2  > D3.

Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

Huh?  Normal level must be akin to "Joke" and easy mode, you probably don't even have to sit at your PC to beat.

I have to agree, while I am sure D3 will be fun and I will most likely purchase that as well, I am already hooked on Torchlight 2. The first one was great and this one is even better. The Engineer is a really fun class, now I am off to try the Embermage. Even on Veteran some of the boss fights take a good 10 minutes or so depending on the class (boss at the end of the Ember Key quest).

    1. Skill trees.

    2. Much more randomised maps.

    3. Interesting loot.

All of this straight off the bat.

Nah, it doesn't seem HP is inflated in higher difficulties, only damage done by enemies. If you make a mistake in Elite, even a small one, you're probably gonna die, but it won't take an hour and a half of whittling down the enemy one HP at a time, at least not on sidequest bosses.

What is it all the D3 fanbois are saying? "YOU'RE COMPARING THE EARLY GAME TO DIFFICULT SETTINGS!!!111!eleven!111!one" Maybe you're doing that, too? ;)

Should this not be in the TL2 forum?

  • syntax42syntax42 Member UncommonPosts: 1,385

I fail to see why people are claiming Diablo 3 is a failure.

The point about skill trees being absent is dumb.  There are plenty of viable builds in Diablo 3.  The system is just different.  In Diablo 2, only a few builds were viable, so having a skill tree was more like having a rat maze.

Level randomization only improves replayability by a small amount.  How many people really played through Diablo 2 more than once on a character?  Twice?  My guess is only the hardcore and the farmers played like that.  The majority of people stopped before or on beating the game's main story.

Diablo 3 seems like they made it more about the action at the expense of the extra "glitter" that distracted you from Diablo 2's flaws.  Fluff and glitter does not make a game good.  Stop staring at the interface, map, and feature list and actually play Diablo 3 before declaring it a failure.

    I agree with OP

T2 is amazingly fun. Or lets just say , its at least equal to D3 - but with all customisation deniyed in D3 (like server browser, single player, able to choose difficulty...etc) + 20$ only

    BUT

D3 is huge game, everyone and its dog will be playing it.

This means huge community vs small

Dont know if this means something to you.

Eveyrthing i've read on d3 has turned me off.

The great hing about the real diablo was it was pick up and play. Pick it up, make a character jump into a dungeon.  It's where it survives. Torchlight does that, does it great.  I can't see a hybrid between diablo and an mmo satisfying the quick adventure feel.

Torchlight 2 looks like garbage.  Can't get into a hack and slash game with those kinds of cutesy graphics.  I'll be sticking with the superior D3.

Totally agree, there is no D2 awesome in Torchllight 2 just WoW'ish neon cartoon graphics that are just alittle to bright, and happy. just because WoW has 10 million players doesn't mean Torchlight should copy thier graphics style.

  • RusqueRusque Member RarePosts: 2,785

I like all three of this years hack'n'slash games. D3, PoE, TL2. If I had to rank them though, it would go D3 > TL2 > PoE

And terrible graphics style. No thanks.

OP apparently trolling or tryin to start a flame war posting a TL2 topic in D3 forum.

Post this in the Torchlight section then, pretty obvious you're just trying to start a flame war.

    THIS. MY thoughts exactly.

D3 feels like watered down casual world of warcrafty storyfest.

Path of Exile and Torchlight II will be my ARPG choices of the year.

Its quite ironic too. I can spend 20 bucks on TL II instead of 60+ on diablocraft 3 and play TL1(as a bonus from preordering TLII), TL2 and POE(which is free) AND save up around 40$ more WHILE getting a whole lot more enjoyment than from diablocraft's horribly streamlined gameplay.

WoW does look better, but you have to agree that they copied WoW's art style and graphics.

I'm impresses tho, not only did they clone one game, but two! It plays like diablo and looks like WoW
