Buying Arma II?

ReskaillevReskaillev Member CommonPosts: 157

So I recently found this mod (thanks to you guys) and wanted to give it a try.

Headed down to steam to buy Arma II and it's expansion...but you still need to pay 25 euros which is not much but still a lil bit too much for a game I might not even like... (only watched videos :p)

So my question to you guys:

- Are Arma II and the expansion good games? or do they suck?

- Is there a way to "demo" Dayzzz without purchasing the engine? (by buying Arma II)

- Cheaper Arma II anywhere else?

Keep an eye on amazon. I think three weeks ago they had Arma for dirt cheap ($5 if i recall correctly)

I know that deal has passed but it seems Amazon always circles around.

https://www.greenmangaming.com - keep an eye on this site too, they have some great deals and I wouldnt be surprised if arma comes on it soon with all the hype DayZ is getting.

Can't help you on whether it's worth buying or not as I haven't played it.  But, last I looked, you could get the combo(base game and addon/expansion) needed for the dayz mod cheaper than steam on amazon.  I think it was 15 last time I looked.

There was also discussion of a free version on the dayz mod page, but I stopped looking into the game when I saw the server population limit.

Is it just me, or is Arma stealth marketing this mod?

I've been thinking about buying it. But I hesitate because buying a game for a Mod that may or may not have any real support doesn't seem like a great idea.

What I hope happens is devs take notice and do what they do best, copy it and make a full game out of the idea.

You can download the free version of the base game, then buy the expansion and manally combine them. This way, it's only ~15$.

But remember that DayZ is nothing but a mod in alpha - which is pretty much how it looks and feels. Just saying.

I know you want info about arma 2, but as I only got experience with day-Z I'd like to say a few things before you go off and buy it.

Had a hard time deciding to buy it or not, but after having spent 1 or 2 days watching live streaming over at twitch tv combined with the fact there is so much information out there to read, it ended up being a fairly easy choice. The game suffers from so many glitches and bugs that I would never recommend it to anyone who isn't truly interested in the game and the features it has. This is a full loot game and there is tons of it to obtain and a lot of supplies you need to loot for survival. Sadly getting on a proper server can take 20 minutes or more to find one that doesn't suffer from lag spikes, loot not spawning, sound issues, fps issues, and what else have you.

This is a very flawed mod which is in alpha, so it's expected. It will bring you just as much joy as it'll bring frustration. Before you buy it make sure you are okey with spending hours gearing your toon and sneaking like mad only to have it all be undone by a bugged zombie that goes through a wall and knocks you unconcious, crawling over a object which kills you for no reason whatsoever, getting killed at the same time as the person you emptied an entire clip into and then due to lag he still got you as well...  frankly I could go on for an hour about all the bugs the game has, but the most annoying one of them all are the unstable servers. they need constant restarting to fix all those sound, fps, loot and lag issues.

With that said, I'm having a blast and even though I got CE GW2, I sadly find this much, much more enjoyable... : /

Oh and the fact that they dont give you HD textures on your character is ridiculous. you have to buy yet another expansion to get them. but the graphics are still great!

You get no HD textures if you are installing the FREE version of Arma 2. If you buy Arma 2:CO or the retail Arma 2 + Operation Arrowhead, you get everything what the game offers.

    @Reskaillev

If you buy the game, get the Arma2: CO package. The game alone without DayZ belongs to one of the best multiplayer fps/sims currently, its a tactical shooter. The first game of the series was released around ten years ago with the name: Operation Flashpoint and was a revolutionary and famous multiplayer in this time and very successfull. When you add a good sound mod and a good AI modification, the offline Campaign aswell the multiplayer part will offer really great gameplay.

Alone the gameplay type CTI/Warfare in multiplayer is a blast, its a mix between RTS and FPS where players build bases and conquer territory on the whole map. You earn money for killing the opponent or capturing bunkers, cities or whatever. You can command your own squad, buy vehicles for ground and air. Some of the battles last for 5-6 hours....definately fun. The project reality team, famous from Battlefield 2 did release their mod for Arma aswell...lots of teamplay.

About DayZ, well i think its worth it. Its a type of multiplayer game which does the right step what players want to expirience exciting gameplay. I think this mod is one of the multiplayer innovations of 2012, it is still in alpha but gets patched quiete frequently. I think it is fun to play.

The mod will be offcial supported within their next Arma 2 patch.

They will be taking notice, Dayz has taken Arma 2 to the top of Steam sales just recently, and has upped the sale of Arma 2 by 500%.  http://www.vg247.com/2012/05/17/day-z-mod-drives-arma-2-sales-up-500/

I believe the creator of Dayz (Rocket) has said he is planning on making Dayz for Arma 3...Though with these crazy sales, you have to wonder if the developpers will make it a standalone game just like you hope.

Believe me when I say this. Arma II is Worth a Purchase all the way...Mods or not, the game is what SOCOM should have been (for those with experience in SOCOM). I had it for a loooong time collecting dust, so I decided to give it a try. Even Without DayZ, the game has a lot of replay value and a nice community unlike most online games. Be Warned though, You'll get hooked once you get used to the controls. It does have a steep learning curve, but once you learn the controls, you'll have a blast against humans and AI alike. It has both PvE and PvP, and with the low price, I'd recommend it. I give the game a 10/10.

I'll maybe purchase it after my exams then :)

ARMA II MP cant be great fun but dont expect it to play like BF3 or COD.. its more of a military simulation than an arcade type fps..

Graphics wise its half decent it does not have many bells and whistles but they use quite high rez textures so it makes up for it a bit..

For the price you an pick combined ops up then yeah its worth it if you like that type of game, if your getting it jsut for DayZ then humm maybe as DayZ is awesome but as stated its just in alpha at the moment and its just a mod..

I bought ARMA 2 CO just for DayZ, and I love every minute of it. It's amazing, trust me!

Ye i have the same concern here as most, i really want to try this mod, but then buying a game i don't have much interest in, just for an alpha mod is kind of a no-no. Not because i don't want to try dayz, i really do and i know i will like it. They said they will integrate the mod into the game fully, so i'll be waiting for that, and i also already play few games so i don't really have time to "test" one more. But once they flesh this out, i'll definitely try it.

Same here, bought it on steam just for DayZ and yes it is totally well worth it.

They will support the mod with the next patch for Arma 2 but not integrate it as far I did read.  Its  very interesting that they plan to port the mod to Arma 3, which gets released this year but which takes longer. I could imagine they will try to release a DayZ standalone game.

I used this guide for installing dayz but it is only if you bought arma 2 from steam.

Yeah I used that, but there's a way easier game. If you go on the DayZ forum, there's an installer which will keep your mod up to date. Very handy!

I've HEARD its possible to install DayZ while using ARMA 2 (free version) + purchasing Operation Arrowhead, but supposedly the texture quality is much lower as a result. This would make for a savings of about $10. There's no way around playing DayZ without owning some version of ARMA 2 and the Arrowhead expansion, however.

I agonized over this for awhile as well, but it was well worth it to me. It's a really well done mod that provides a gaming experience you simply can't get anywhere else.

I have watched videos for the last couple of dayz and followed threads here in the general forum and I just got to the point where I had to throw down £25 and give it a try.  Looking forward till tomorrow now when download is complete.

    BTW really excited to play!
