So... How is it?

I looked forward to this game coming out but like most people was dissapointed once it finally did. I liked the idea it was cool and really wished it worked out. How is it now? I haven't tried it since they brought out the jobs, and all these updates seem pretty cool.

The game right now is pretty easy to describe. You level on Leves solo or in parties until about 25, then joining a party to grind on mobs becomes the faster way, though all classes (combat, gathering and crafting) can be leveled to max on them (I'd actually suggest you max your first class on Leves since they're a good supply of Gil). While your leveling with leves, you can do the main storyline for the nation your in, side quests (like normal quests in other MMO's), and Grand Company quests.

You have a few dungeons to play through on the way to cap and some right at cap, which drop useful gear for the levels they're aimed to be completed with. Endgame actually has some content now. There's a few primal fights (Ifrit, Moogle, Garuda) which are being taken out in 2.0, which each have a set of weapons they drop. There is a new system called Hamlet, which you protect a structure with NPC's from waves of beastmen. Crafters and gatherers are needed too, which is a nice change on endgame.

Crafting and gathering is still a big part of the game, even more considering the stats Materia adds. The market wards is still there sadly until 2.0 comes, but you don't have to travel to Ul'Dah to find stuff worth buying now. They added mercantile houses which lets you buy from market wards outside of the town your in.

Combat had a huge overhaul again since removing the stamina bar. Classes get a new move every few levels, with most linking together in combos. You don't have AP anymore, your class level determines how many cross-class skills you can equip (1 at 5, 2 at 10, etc).

Controls and the like are still the same, a bit clunky if your using keyboard/mouse, and there's still a slight lag when buying/selling items. If it was the feeling of the game that turned you off, you might want to wait until 2.0 comes. But if it was the lack of content that made you quit, you'd find tons of stuff to do now.

I bought the game yesterday, and am enjoying it, not high in level yet or anything, but it is worth playing. It is a different experience from other MMO's which is refreshing.

Forgot to mention, the sub is $10 until 2.0 hits. If you subscribe for 3 months before then, you get 2.0 for $10 a month too for life, while others pay $15. They're doing away with the $1 a character thing too when 2.0 comes. A subscription gets you 8 character slots per world.

just clarifying, its 12.99 for one character per server and 14.99 for 8 (iirc?) per server. if you do the 3 months pre-2.0 you get the 14.99 version for 9.99.

Ah, true. But the $12.99 only gets you 1 character a world.

Awesome! Well I was trying to log in to start paying but I apparently need a char... How can I have a char if I can't get in the game because I haven't started paying yet?

You need to go to https://square-enix.com/account/ and log in. Go to Select Service on the left, Final Fantasy XIV, Options List, and add new option if you don't have one available. Until 2.0 comes, you need to add character slots to your account, and each one costs $1. Your monthly sub and first character slot only costs $10 until 2.0 hits.

It should show your character slot in Active Options once you activate one.

If you haven't made a character yet, start in Masamune. Has a good population and I could help you out the first few levels.

Actually each char is 3.00 per month until 2.0 comes out. FFXIV itself is 6.99 per month.

So the useless, crappy, worthless UI i still there? Any news on this changing in 2.0, for a proper PC-interface? The UI was the reason I gave up on this game.

I'm having no problem with the UI... But Yoshi said at E3 that they are changing the UI to mimic WoW. Looks like they are trying for the WoW players.

They're gonna have 2 UI's. One is gamepad themed, like the one we have now (and works fine if you use a gamepad). Other is gonna be more "normal", comparable to other MMO's.

Good news, might actually give the game another shot then. I didn't have "a problem" with the interface other than it was clearly meant for consoles and very cumbersome to work with. All things took too long time to do and you had to constantly go through one million menus or make macro after macro.  This took way too much focus away from the game itself and broke immersion in the worst way possible.

But if they implement a WoW-like interface it should be fine, however I fail to see how implementing a standard PC-interface is shooting for the WoW-audience.

It is pretty much exactly going to be a WoW-like interface (granted, the game mechanics are still quite different so that will result in some changes to the norm for sure) although aesthetically speaking the XIV dev team is in a whole league of their own. While functionality is most important the early screens leave no doubt that the XIV UI will be very pleasing to the eye.
