I'd like to gauge a general opinion, most of all.
It seems most players will pick a server based on whether it's daytime in-game or not, because let's face it, night-time sucks... but what if the cycle was fast enough to cycle a 24-hour period in 3 hours, allowing a quick enough night phase to 'stick it out' and allowing players to pick servers closer to themselves, rather than just taking advantage of the local time?

No, I do however think they should turn the lighting up just a little at night. Not enough to make light sources not needed however. It's crazy unrealistically dark right now. I live in the country away from all lights and even on a dark and stormy night it doesn't get as dark as it gets in this game at times. I think it's because of the fact that your eyes adjust to darkness but that is hard to realistically portray in a game. Basically right now it's like you just walked from a brightly lit area into total darkness all of the time. They need to adjust for this.

While, it's not a bad idea, I don't think it will have much of an effect on whether players will want to continue to play through the night time. It's my opinion that players do not play in the darkness, not because the length of it, but because the darkness itself is too much of a deterrent.
Whether it is 8 hours or 2 hours, I would much rather either log for that time or I would just find a server that has their time adjusted, so that that I can continue to play in the light.
What needs to happen is that there needs to be incentive to play at night. I hit on this in another thread here. Better percentage for higher tiered gear in smaller cities. Rare chance for military spawn in cities. Lighten the darkness up just a bit. But, not too much to make the light sources we do have meaningless. You don't want to make players not need them. They should go back to making flares attract zombies to the flare, so that players can use it as a distraction. There should be lanterns and flashlights that you can use in tandem with your secondary weapons. Perhaps more light source weapon attachments. Night vision goggles need to be less rare as well. There should be some way to light up the cities, perhaps some street lights or un-enterable buildings can have some windows that light up if a player has the tools and resources available to fix power generators or/and breakers. It could potentially make playing at night and scavenging a bit easier for everyone and actually not force people out of night time servers because it's nearly too dark to see or do anything.
