Why hasn't anyone ripped it off...

I have trolled trawled various game and mmo forums over time. Again and again when asked SWG resource management and economy comes out as a top favourite. I'm not an swg fanboi, I was just wondering, in this age of unoriginality and copying anything that will make a quick buck, why has no-one replicated SWG's economy/resource model in a game?

Is it just too dificult or too much hastle to have resources randomly spawning with random stats to effect crafting?

Because it's way easier to have an auction house and resource nodes?

Because its not a feature/functionality that the majority of players desire and are demanding in their MMORPG's.  (at least, in the eyes of the people who pay to make them)

Face it, WOW doesn't have it, and that seems to be the barometer than most MMORPG design is based on, at least in AAA space.

Because most people dont want to farm for months tog et decent resources so they can actually make something decent.

SWG was awesome when it was around. But by today's standards it is not all that. The problem is, is that my brothern of the original SWG and I are seeing things through rose colored glasses. Now that SWTOR shot me in the face, I have awoken to realize I do not have the time to play a game that indepth or time consuming any more, but I can still look back on the time I spent in SWG fondly.

Because gamers now a days want everything easy, even in the crapfest days of crafting mechanics of 100 tin ore click one button 50 tin bars click one button 25 tin boots I would say 50% of people don't even bother to craft.Because its pointless in 90% of mmo's and even in the few that its worth doing I would still say 50% of gamers wouldn't want to spend time crafting.I personally love it and won't even entertain an mmo that dosn't at least have decent crafting.

Edit: In fact thinking about it,crap crafting = crap game.If the developers can't even be bothered making a decent crafting system for the launch of thier game what does it say about the rest of thier game?

How similar is Ryzom?  (a small, older game, but one that still comes up from time to time)

    +1

I love crafting in MMOs, but SWG had item decay and a rather weird rulesystem where people didnt actually traveled the world, but stayed in one place just crafting.

Personally when I play a MMO I want to have adventures. Raiding for example, managing a really tough opponent.

I believe it all boiled down to micro management, it became overwhelming and probably needed a dedicated team to monitoring/fine-tuning it.
