Well, I want an MMO to play over the summer, while waiting for that other game to find a release date. So, I finally pre-ordered TSW.
I'm going in knowing very little about the game. I'll be checking out my first beta event this weekend. My expectations are set the same way I've approached most other MMOs that have released in recent years; if I get a solid month from the game it will be worth the box price and any time beyond that will just be a bonus.
There have been some fun MMOs in recent years, but the stumbling block for me when evaluating whether the game will be a flash in the pan experience, or a long term adventure, has far too often come down to world size and lack of content.
So, in order to properly adjust my expectations for TSW, how many game zones are there?
How big are they compared to the various WoW zone sizes?
How much redundancy of content is there for leveling alts and for allowing choice to players in how they chart their leveling course through the world?
With most of the content being quests, how many hours of quests does a typical zone offer before the quest content is exhausted? Can you explore the world and progress? Or is it a bit more linear than that?
Thanks in advance for any answers.

1) Not from personal experiance but from what I have read from other CB testers I beleive that are 8 total zones.
2) I played Kingsmouth which was about the size of Barrens I want to say maybe a little smaller? It might be closer to the zone north of the barrens was it Ashenvale maybe? Kingsmouth is the first area you can start questing in during beta. You can go to other areas technically, however the way the skill system works you will probably not have the right skills to take on the monsters even though the story is "free-form"
3) From what I saw there is a good amount of available quests you can do or skip. Some or maybe all are repeatable so you can edit your quests to how you want to play. Not sure how I feel about this myself but I suppose it depends on your preference.
4) For the 7 or so hours I played I felt the game to be pretty linear as far as how the quests progressed. Again you can go out of order at any time but you might not be able to take on some of the mobs depending on your skill purchases. There are random quests that can be found, with a good amount of variation.
5) I would def try out the free beta weekend, it def has some good points to it. However I feel the game ultimately falls short from my initial experiance. I will however keep tabs on it because I feel that there is a lot of potential. Plus I hear good things from the CB testers in regards to Funcom and their feedback.
If anything I posted above is inaccurate please feel free to reply and let us know. I am going based on my own gameplay experiance and what I have read from closed beta testers.
I posted this in another thread (specific to how many zones):
Here's a breakdown taken from TSW forums:
3 cities:
-London (main hub)
-New York
-Seoul
3 regions = 8 PvE zones total:
-New England/Soloman Island, 3 zones (Kingsmouth, Savage Coast, Blue Mountain)
-Egypt, 2 zones (Scorched Desert, City of the Sun God)
-Transylvania, 3 zones (Carpathian Fangs, Besieged Farmlands, and another one I forget the name of)
5 normal dungeons:
-3 in New England
-1 in Egypt
-1 in Transylvania
8 elite dungeons:
-all previous dungeons boosted up
-1 more in Egypt
-1 most in Transylvania
8 nightmare dungeons:
-all 8 dungeons boosted up
At least 3-4 PvP zones at launch, at least one of them being rather large scale.
Completely hardcore players who play 12 hours a day have stated from a PvE consumption timeframe you are probably looking at about 4 weeks - this is specific just to leveling and getting the quests done. This does not take into account doing the Elite or Nightmare dungeons.
Casual players, with jobs during the week and who spend most of their time on the weekend playing call out about 2 months worth of PvE content - again, this is specific just to leveling and getting the quests done - again, not taking into account Elite/Nightmare dungeons.
I've played the CB and leveled up multiple character types - the replayability is pretty infinite, as the game is not linear. There is a linear story quest, that you can complete at your own pace. However, there are random quests all over the place that you can choose to pick up or not - so, beyond the linear storyline quest I have yet to actually progress through the game the same way on any of my characters; on one character I chose to complete all the side quests specific to the areas of the map the government agencies have taken over, on another character I chose to complete all the invading sea monster quests, on another I spent hours knocking out the ghost quests and on the last character i focused on all the zombie quests.
It goes beyond the base content though - as there are tons of different quest types, the various types I've come across:
- Puzzle quests, where you are given clues and have to figure out the codes or decipher mysterious clues in order to get to the next part - some of these are as simple as using the in-game web browser to search on google, some require you to decipher Morse Code and go to the location provided, some require that you solve riddles, read books, pay attention to random numbers written on walls etc..
- Kill quests, generic "kill x mob"
- Stealth Quests, the goal is to avoid discovery in order to inflitrate specific areas, get information or steal items
etc..etc..etc..
This MMO is honestly unlike any MMO I've played in the past - and I had no intention at all of playing it, my friend invited me to a beta weekend and it was such a fresh and interesting experience that I was hooked.
Lastly - the game goes BEYOND the client... they've woven so many layers of social media content and viral puzzles for people to figure out..
... if you want a brief example, that I will in no way be able to explain - go to www.funcom.com and click on any NON LINKED section of the page (click on the far left where it's just black) and then hit 33
Ok. Thank you. The world sounds smaller than I would want for a long term game, but more than big enough to play over the summer. Looking forward to the final beta weekend!

I am a slow gamer it took me 40 /days to level cap in Everquest, it took me 20 days / played to level cap in OG WoW, I am almost caped in TSW after 20 hours. There are another 4 zones but I'm almost there and after I am done, what is the point.
Sad, TSW has zones smaller than most eq or WoW zones and it only has 8 of them, those older MMOs had tons of zones, with more things to kill.
No you're not. LOL that's impossible. No really it is.
Ofc it's impossible. He just hates TSW, check his post history.
I'm mainly curious about his criteria for capping a game that lacks a level system.
.. But in a good way.
it is impossible to get rank 10 gear in 20 hours and max out a weapon deck/build? no, that is four zones, pick an OP build as balance is lacking and faceroll 4 zones.
As I say I am average, I know a great player could do it in 5-10 hours.
who the heck were the beta testers? as anyone would discredit that. Beta testers should test stuff and look for faults, one is as I stated.
Well, if someone hates a game with passion and his mission is to convince others not to play it then any objective criteria is not needed.
That would be me I posted this on TSW forums. Ciao ciao.
truth is i don't give a damn, i'm not a hater, it is an average game, but if I can do it in 20, and say it can be done in 40 then some people can do it in 10 hours/ yes I am slow and have done it in 20. I speak ofi lvl 10 gear and sp to fill a solid build that you never have to change. so the game can be 100% complete in 30 hours but most people will be done in 100 hours.
