Been waiting overa year for this title. I thought originally it would go to Gamepot USA but since they went belly-up nice to see someone else has got it. SOE has had a pretty spotty record but the optimist in me sees Vanguard and Wizardry as a good 1-2 punch.
Now time to get off this "Summer 2012" crap and give us some hard dates.

Looking forward to it too, I've always liked the series and the idea that it plays "the least bit" like Demon/Dark Souls is a plus to me, even if a departure from the series itself. Hopefully Pdeath is as hard to proc as it was in the single-player games, but sadly, there is no reset button or passwords to get to a point prior to it happening this time around... and hopefully there isn't some CS item that will be end-all because of preventing it, but my kreskin crystal is telling me there will be.

Well if it follows the Japanese version, there is a CS item that prevents permadeath which is pretty disappointing. The way I saw it work was everytime you die, there were scales and you had a chance of living. I think the more times you died the less chance you had to come back. You could also sacrifice items to raise your res chance.
Curious to see how SOE will adapt the feature. It is a selling point on thier site still do hopefully it won't be a buy your way out of trouble scenario. To be honest if they do go that route I hope to see it in one of two forms.
1. A lower price (3-5) but you get X uses per character. After that, the option is greyed out.
2. Unlimited uses but a restrictive price (20 dollars)
Personally I would much rather see 1 as 2 could be abused by those with more money to throw around but I also understand the F2P model and concessions being made. If people want to spend thousands of dollars to keep 1 guy above, then that is money I don't need to spend myself to see more content flowing in. Just permadeath is a major feature and hopefully it won't be compromised too much.
Any idea if you can get your namesakes back if a character is lost?

I found this in a description:
The most prominent feature is that death in Wizardry Online is permanent. After being killed, you will lose your body and live as a ghost. There is still a chance to lay hands on your corpse and gain a resurrection, but it is not easy. A failure means everlasting suffering in the form of an apparition.
To evade such a hopeless fate, you are advised to team up with powerful allies and take part in an impenetrable guild. If you are confident about your charisma and leadership, you can also create your own party which may include up to 100 players. But remember: you have only yourself to trust in this relentless world. Even your best friends can turn against you during combat, so it is important to equip yourself with the most advanced weapons and outfits.
Three-decade-long experience is an unquestionable proof to Wizardry Online’s high standard in all aspects. If you are looking for some hardcore games, Wizardry Online definitely qualifies as a prime choice. Let’s wait and see!
The first thing that stands out is a ghost. So maybe you can chat and do social things with the guy just be out of the loop as far as combat goes. Maybe also you make a name and all your guys are tied to it. I never tried the Japanese verion myself but I'll research that.
The second is the betrayal function. I guess there is a flag option or something but even being in the same guild and being able to kill someone opens the door for griefiers and EvE style spy/assassin options. Personally I don't know about that. Even when you have total ttols in the guild, you still want to think they have your back when all is said and done. Combine griefing and permadeath you might have some heavy duty trolling going on. Imagine you get guys playing for 1-2 years on the same character only do be done Caesar style by people they thought they could trust. It's something you have to give credit for them to try but putting the human element into it, it could go very very bad.
*rubs forehead*
That kind of system might work Japan because being a total asshole offends their ancestor spirits... in the west it will be an absolute mess. I cannot see this going well now, but I will still give it a go.

Yeah can just hope the trolling griefing elements are kept to a minimum and it doesn't become totally Pay2Win. In the meantime gonna play NEStalgia to get my old school fix in until this comes out.
Now the only thing left is to make a MMO version of a first person RPG like a true Wizardry, Bard's Tale, or my personal favorite Dungeons and Dragons: Treasure of Tarmin
