1. SWG pre cu- even after they fixed the NGE to have it playable again.
2, DAoC - Many hours of farming with groups and pvp kept me entertained for years.
3. EQ2 - Been playing off and on since release.
4. TSW - I know this just released, but it has been a LONG time since I actually want to play a new mmorpg past the first month, it is something different, and I love it.
5. Phantasy Star Online (dreamcast) - and now can't wait until PS2 comes to NA!

How does thinking WoW below average when it launched equate to me liking GW2? I disagree with anyone that overglorifies "vanilla WoW" as when it launched, it had no features that made it stand out.

These are two of the biggest game-changers the genre has ever seen.
Both mostly negative, unfortunately.
I dont remember battlegrounds being in MMRPGs before WoW either, but I was never a big PvPer.

and if you are only talking about launch, than only solo centric levelling applies. Thats one more new concept than Rift introduced though.

Just the right mix of accessibility and complexity. I love games like Homeworld, so EVEs setting and atmosphere are great to me. I've played it for 7 years and while I don't play every day anymore, there's still plenty that keeps me interested and engaged.
2. Asheron's Call
Great class-less system, aim based combat, huge open world with tons to explore and discover, truly epic quests. Loved this game and played it for 4 years.
3. Shadowbane
Wonderful open world game that was dark and different, filled with interesting races and classes. Really nice building systems, and seriously epic open-world PVP. Played from release until they shut it down. RIP.
4. Ultima Online
The game that got me started in MMOs and my first taste of such freedom in a game. Loved the skill-point system, the magic system, the wild west feel of the gameworld and the feeling of being able to do whatever you wanted. I have many great memories from UO and I still play games with some of the people I met way back in Britannia.
5. World of Warcraft
The only MMO I was able to play with many of my "non-gaming" friends. Doesn't have the same depth as some other MMOs but it is/was a fun game and I enjoyed doing raids like MC, BWL and AQ with my guild as well as all the PVP that ensued in places like Blackrock Mountain.

Rift and WoW are both creatively bankrupt.
WoW was the first MMO I played where soloing was more efficient than grouping, but I agree, not a good thing.
DAoC BGs were persistent zones, were they not? WoWs BGs are minigames. Different concept.
Phasing isnt quite instancing. If anything its an upgrade of sorts because its seamless the way its done in WoW.
And even if other games had a dungeon finder (I have no idea which ones), was it cross realm?
1. Dark Age of Camelot. No game has came close, or will ever come as close to this one. The Realm Vs Realm combat still holds the standards to every game that I play. The community was the best I've ever been a part of in any game. If only they could make DAoC 2.
2. World of Warcraft (Vanilla). All of the old original zones, no flying mounts, the old pvp grinds, those were the days of that game.
3. Fallen Earth. As close to playing Mad Max as there is.
I've played a lot of other mmo's, but none of the others would make a top 5 list.
TSW is really fun and ill stick with it as my number 2 mmo for a bit but nothing beats SWTOR for me. I have never had so much fun in an mmo as I still do in that game.

in no order because i just cant : FFXI , WoW , Daoc , Eq/Eqoa / Eq2 (up to EoF ><) . Hoping for FFXIV 2.0 and of course gw2
