Well at least for AAA mmos that require a subscription! Today Funcom's TSW opened a new server to accommodate the increasing number of players coming in. I mean tell me when was the last time you've heard of a mmo opening new servers after a game has launched over a week ago?
More surprising is that it's a RP server. Does this mean that players are getting ready to anchor down for the long haul with TSW as their main mmo for a few months? Does it mean that TSW is fast becoming a haven for a more mature mmo player because of the RP server? I for one am quite satisfied with the game so far. It's not perfect by any means, chat still bugs, "meet up" function hardly works, loot bugs during cutscenes sometimes, among other things.
Dunno though, TSW could become the themepark equivalent to EvE's sandbox base. Whatever the case, no one can say TSW is dying from the sub model anytime soon.

Huh? You see companies do this all the time. I will say I'm a bit stunned that it was an RP one they opened. Now that you don't see much.
On a side note glad to see they opened one rather than went into "Oh noes, we be on r wai 2 WoW numers yah!", and opened fifty servers.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

Swtor opened new servers in the first few weeks and now look at them. They could probably merge them down to 4 or 5 and populations would just be standard.

They didnt do what most games do at launch. Release with 50 small servers where only 5-10 get packed then reluctantly merge all the dead servers over time...usually too late and people get a few months of time on a dead server.
I think i read somewhere that the TSW servers can fit 20k people at a time, and they are not seperated which is why you can group with someone from any server aside from pvp.
Its nice to see an RP server added, speaks volumes on the type of people playing...however RPing in this game isnt such a stretch or as lame as pretending your an ork or something you can pretty much be yourself and you would be RPing of course you need to pertend your in your faction ect.
Arcadia... the only RP dimension went to full status, thats why they opened up another RP server.. for those that seemed suprised that it has an RP tag.
Didn't SWTOR open more because of teh queues, only to not have more after?
Anyway, opening up more servers is good, but until we get specific sub and sales numbers, it won' mean much. Not to meantion down the line.
I would like to know how many players each dimension can have compared to normal servers.
WAR did.
RIFT did.
SWTOR just increased caps though.
Yes...but they did the normal company line of opening a ridiculous number of servers compared to what was really needed.
Kind of nice to see a company not jumping the gun and going apeshit adding servers for once.

Not much of an RP server anyway. I've ran into a total of 2 people RPing and it was more along the lines of *TweedleDick puts the cup down and stares deeply and longingly into her eyes.* And even then they stopped when I tried to do a Ralph Pootawn(google it) on them.
As far as the OP goes, SWTOR continued to open up new servers through out the first month. And it wasn't just one, more like dozens.
BioWare had no other choice. They had horrendous queues, 2+ hours. You don't fix that with 1 extra server.
The only dimension that's not at full status right now is Daemon I believe besides the new RP one.
Except that it isn't true at all. Grim is the only server that's full right now. The rest are listed as Online.

oh and here...

To the OP, that's good new indeed. It's all one server, so they split into another demension. The difference with TOR and this is the server(s). TOR had about 140 US servers - all separate. TSW launched with seven demensions on one server. In my opinion, what they're doing with the single server tech is pretty impressive and will make for a much smoother game as you can play with folks in any demension.
I have though seen many games do this. Hell, Warcraft was opening servers years down the road. But it does show that the initial sales of the game in no way indicate the current sucess, even a week or so after release. I know many friends who were reluctant to give it a try, but have done so in the past few days and are loving it.
As for Heartless... there's a shocker. A negative comment on TSW....lol
Yeah, nice try again heartless. More bashing of the game I see. The demension status change every few minutes as folks log on and off. If it's not full at the moment, wait a minute and it will change. Man, you just don't quit.
I don't get it. What's so new about opening new servers? Another "Yay TSW" thread with little meaning it seems.

I betcha it just burns your ass doesn't it?
Ragnar Tournquist is my favorite adventure creator. I have nothing against TSW, but countless meaningless threads have been started lately. Some of them are good and actually talk about the game's content and gameplay. This one is just stupid. Seriously. Just my opinion, but o m g really, really? A new server opened? Uhm....w00t?

Did I say they should have just added one at a time? No...I said they went overboard with the amount they added. Like many companies do

I kind of agree, it's a bit like the thread about the CEO stepping down to another important position in the company and slanting it like it's a catastrophe.
It's also a bit meaningless as nobody knows how many people TSW's dimensions can handle, since they are running the single server technology - it's basically one big server artificially divided for Fusang.
It's called internet forum, where anything good about a game is awesome. This happens everywhere.
They use single server technology. It isn't the same as in TOR or others. It simply means the home instance is getting to full by default and the pvp landscape it full. You still play in the same pve world for the most part and can join the other "servers" at any time.
You stay sassy!
It's reactionary to all the trolls that have flooded the forums probably. Or just exciting that it looks like a game they love might be growing a little. Personally, I'm happy that there's a new dimension; but realistic that TSW success isn't based on a short game with mass amounts of subs. For the game to thrive it needs to keep their subs and add more over time.
Hopefully that will work out for them and me because I love the game.
Yes, you're right. I guess I'm just being overly touchy about it. I suppose it IS better news than "zomg they're merging servers." So...yeah.

I hope it does well, but this is a claim more suited for January 2013 than July 2012.
a yo ho ho
You just had to go there didn't you? I appreciate it though. I do have a few hours I'm still stuck at work.
Thanks
