Weird Question for You All, What would you do?

JakeSimJakeSim Member RarePosts: 884

Alright, so I got some OCD in gaming. So, what I did to try to counter it was to tell my gf that if I delete my character one more time I can't play for a week. So, I ended up deleting my character. However, she let me have a freebie and let me recreate another character.

A little later I found out I could not get a server transfer at the time in The Secret World so, maybe my OCD is a factor here, I started stressing. I remade my character on the server I "wanted" and did not tell her until like a day or whatever later. So, now I'm feeling guilty and she's upset that I did that but she says she wants me to play but at the same time it's like she's thinking I chose the game over the deal I made with her. She says to play but I feel guilty and like it's maybe wrong cause I didn't keep my word.

Any opinions of the situation?

I really want to play as when I'm home, which is a lot, video games keep me "sane", if you want to call it that. They have always helped to relax me so I guess it kind of is a big deal to me as I don't have much else I'd rather be doing at the moment.

So, I was just on the phone with her. She thinks if I want to try to get rid of my OCD, I shouldn't play for a week because she thinks eventually I'll have to try not to give into my compulsion. That might be tough though.

Idek if it's a compulsion. If I make a character in the game and play for some time and then wait a week before playing the character, I may not feel like I'm really "attached" to the character anymore. Which may make me want to remake the character.

I said the deal would be off after the first week is over, but I still may want to recreate my character after the first week.

  • Every time you try to fight the urge to remake your character and get frustrated, ask your girlfriend for some sweet loving. Eventually you'll associate that character with said sweet loving, and no longer desire to delete him.

On a serious note, if you're having this much trouble keeping a character, you very possibly have some kind of OCD. Do you have similar compulsions outside the realm of gaming, or a need to constantly start over a task but never manage to actually complete it? If it's just a quirk of behavior that's one thing, but if it starts to impact quality of life it may be time to seek professional help for it. And don't feel bad about doing so if you do, it's a real condition and can indeed make life very difficult if not managed.

Oh I'm diagnosed with OCD and it stinks. However, OCD seems to hit me mainly with what I enjoy. So, it's mostly impacted my relationship and with games I really like.

Actions speak louder than words, with everyone. If you say you're going to do something, do it. In this case, you stated something and then failed to complete it.

To me, it sounds like your demons (OCD/Gaming/Compulsion in general) are stronger than you are. These types of addictive behaviors or patters can and do create many issues.

To me it sounds like you're looking for something to keep your mind busy. Games do this, but not just video-games. Have you tried Sudoku, or word puzzles? Perhaps a book, even?

I would get some treatment for that OCD or just accept that this is how it is, without making excuses for it. Make people adjust to you instead of the other way around
