Considering most of the stuff bought with gems are character bound (par bank slots), i consider the prices quite hefty to say the least, but that's just my 2gems.
I've been beyond care about the $ / € for years now because that has always been the case due to the different VAT systems (in EU VAT is always included in the purchase price as dictated by trade laws, NA it isn't) and was discussed to death on the forums of many a game over the years.
That's also for example why many of us euros imported some media like lp/cd/dvd from NA and hoped they wouldn't be picked out at customs before the digital purchase era.

None of them are required to play any part of the game though.
I plan to max out my character slots immediately (to reserve names), and that's it.
And remember, you can also convert in game gold to gems.

All I've gotta say is... I wonder how many people will seriously try and 'pay 2 win' now? lol.
Honestly, for the most part I found the prices to be pretty reasonable. At least for the things I want. Extra character slots aren't that expensive, neither are storage upgrades. I don't plan on server hopping, so I'm not too worried about that.

But even if you do... think about it. In most MMOs, it costs between $15 and $20 for a SINGLE character.
Here you pay $25 (or $28 or whatever the precise sum is), and you get all your characters transfered at once. If you have 5 character slots, that's $5.60 per char, and if you have all 8, it's... $3.50 per char.
Not to mention you can just save in game gold and get the transfer of all your chars for free.

Sub game = $14.99 per month, thats almost $180 a year
I doubt I will ever spend more than $100 on GW2 over its lifetime unless they start selling "novelty" items.
This is what it boils down to.
Compare it to the alternative. I do not have a problem putting money down on a game, as long as it comes down to LESS than i would have been paying for a sub. if the cost comes to $3-6/month, I don't mind. Small price to pay to support a great idea, company, & game.

Thread locked likely, it was stated a similar one was locked before that one but basically it said 800 gems = 10 dollars/euro and like 8,5 pounds or something.

Oh for sure. Not saying it's not a fair deal, but it's still not one I'm really going to comment on, as I don't really intend on using it.
And ya, it really remains to be seen what the exchange rate will be. Personally I'm okay with the prices atm. They aren't much different than other games are charging, even with a subscription fee.

Ah... I plan to have a yearly gem shop budget of 0$ (or 0€) so doesn't really concern me..
Yep, Cow finisher is clearly a p2w item. I mean, how do you expect to win without a Cow finisher? It's ridiculous!
There can be 5000 completely innocent cosmetic items on the cash shop, but it still doesn't change the fact that you can buy gold with $ . That's the only real issue I have with the CS.
I don't see it as a problem really, there's still nothing in the shop that you have to have to play and enjoy the game.
Bags and bank slots - stuff like that are usually mandatory for higher levels, BUT you will have lots more gold then, so you could use that gold to buy gems and never pay.
NOW if you would like those early on and have no in-game gold (for some reason) - but some gems and use them - shouldn't be too expensive (much less than 100$-180$ a year, like other sub-based MMOs)

And that still doesn't change the fact that the way the game is built, gold isn't important enough to offset the balance of pvp or pve gameplay by itself. Supply still limits the usefulness of gold in WvW. sPvP gear is all essentially free. PvE isn't gearcentric enough. And, has been mentioned ad nauseum, it's not making gold appear from thin air. That gold comes from other players, who have to chose to use that gold to buy gems. If they don't make use of it, or if they set the value of gems as very little in gold, that heavily restricts what someone can do.
The most horrific thing I could see someone doing would be buy a skajillion crafting mats, then rolling a new toon and using said mats to level by crafting. Since the devs said it's entirely possible to get to 80 by crafting alone, he could build a max level toon with top end crafted gear in (theoretically) a day or two perhaps. All this means is he got there faster than someone else. It doesn't make him any better of a player, and it doens't mean he has access to anything that anyone who levelled up and earned the exact same gear the "old fashioned" way doesn't.
Unless your deifnition of winning is "having the most gold and being able to swim around in it ala Scrooge McDuck"(Note Developers: Make this a real thing in a game, thank you!), The guy with storebought gold isn't getting anywhere.
Now if you wanna take a moral high road stance and say that Mr Goldbuyer is "cheating" by getting ahead of people who worked at it....then there's not much I can say for you. If that's your moral stance, whatever. I think you could be finding better things to be indignant about in this world but...whatever flaots your boat.

Also you don't sell Gems (for gold) in auctions, getting very high prices for them. It's a system based on supply and demand like the materials in Guild Wars 1, you can't set your own price.

And what are you going to buy with that gold that gives you an advantage over someone else?
And before you say WvW stuff, that only works around the keep the guild owns and if you have enough people to own a keep then influence is not going to be a very big shortage either.

Yes, I know what you mean... you can buy gems and trade them for pre-existing gold in game if and only if other players are willing to purchase your gems for the price in gold you're asking, but you should be clearer on that. You may give someone the wrong impression.
Hopefully a lot of people try to "pay to win", so I can buy all their gems with in-game gold. I plan on playing the broker system, like I do in most games. It should be pretty easy to make 100's of gold pretty quickly if you do it right (with little effort as well). I should be swimming in gems, bank/bag slots and character slots in no time. I am just curious how much the gems are going to be selling for.
I will take it upon myself to get all this stuff without paying a dime. Though, I might throw some money ArenaNet's way eventually if I am really enjoying the game after a month.

Europe = 20% additional VAT (on average). Those prices differences don't surprise not shock me, it was to be expected.
Also, in the first answers, there's that guy saying:
"Wow I wasn't expecting any more than $1 per 100 gems. That's rather disappointing... will be like $25 for a character transfer"
He forgets a major point in his calculations... for those $25, you transfer all your characters at once.

Quite a lot I hope. Brings the prices down for us who only pay with gold
all the endgame stuff is bought skillpoints, so who cares about gems :P
Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)
