Rangers farming their own pet for XP

ZooceZooce Member Posts: 586

Kill a mob for 13 xp, ressurect your pet for 21 xp.   Does this seem off to anyone else?

I like the experience reward for saving another player, but the pet dies almost every fight.

... yet for some reason I'm 4 levels above my ranger friend who has been playing with me mostly nonstop.

I think it's because I get bored while she's rezzing her pet and sometimes I just kill an extra enemy or two (or six). The time you spend rezzing, you could run up and kill another couple monsters!  If your pet is dying that often, you're being slowed down, the xp gain isn't worth it. :/

You also did forget that everyone can resurrect everyone, including pets. Most rangers i saw didn't resurrect their pet, but i did (after the fight).

And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore

It wasn't my pet, I played mesmer and found a ranger to run around with in my travels.  I loved ressing his pet with him for the bonus xp, but after a while I noticed it was worth more than the mobs we were killing.

Couldn't agree more, it's a plan waste of time I stopped playing my ranger in 2nd BWE because the pet sucked far to much. I feel if they get the balance right it could be worth another visit back but from the sounds of it not atm. I wonder if this is the same with all pet race players would love to hear from some.

I went back into beta and reported this and hope they don't over correct when the fix comes.

Pet mechanics seem broken, or they are pretty much pointless, however one want's to look at it.   I played a Ranger during the last few BWEs, and was going to play one at release.   However one spends most of the time running around with a dead pet, but did notice people like attempting to rezing them.    My opinion would be to remove them, as they are more of an annouance than anything.    Also for a pet class, one doesn't seem connected to them.  So probably going to go Guardian.

Not saying you are wrong Nightbandit, only you may want to rethink the pets. I play the ranger and one of the things people need to understand is the pet class is not like say the WoW hunter, Your pets are going to die and quite often but you can have 2 active pets and swap them out on the fly so you should think about swapping pets when they get low on health or die. Keep in mind when the CD for pet swap comes back, your downed pet comes back in at full health. If you pet swap a downed pet though the CD is increased. Pets aren't there to tank for you in GW2. Other pet classes I feel were crutched by dependency on pets for survival while the GW2 ranger the pets feel like a weapon or utility rather than a necessity. Hope this helps any other rangers who feel the same. Also it depends on the pets. Moa birds heal themselves and do pretty well at survivability while cats out damage them and add nice party buff, but are glass cannons.

As to the OP, exp falls like rain in this game. You get it from so many actions you do that I don't see raising a pet for exp as a n extortion of the system since the more often the pets dies the longer it takes to res them. Kinda negates farming them that way.

I'm also slightly bothered by the pet's rezzing mechanics but not due the experience gain (you get exp from doign anything in this game).

The problem for me is that there's often so much happening on the screen (especially in WvW and  DE's where large gruops of players show up eg meta events) that my trigger to rez someone is when the message (hit F to heal) pops up on my screen when close to a downed player / pet. I wish that would always be a player and not someones pet who in such scenarios isn't particularly useful anyways so I'm basically stopping contributing to the fight until I realize I'm rezzing a pet.

Even if the ranger could level a bit faster than everyone else, which they can't, it wouldn't matter. They would just get downleveled to the area they are in anyway.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

i agree - should be an option added to distinguish rezzing for downed player only

Pet switching made all the difference for me. One dies..switch to another. Instant full health pet.

mobs don't give neough xp to be effective for grinding. gotta do hearts or events to level at anything like a decent clip. sorry. no grinding for you.

Actually the ranger class was very broken as my pet died every other fight (events)

You can change pet in-fight when he dies to another pet and when change cooldown fades the dead pet is in full health and you can change again.

It's a lot faster to do event cahins for 800-900 xp per event than it is to kill a mob for the tiny 16 xp for a mob kill then 24 xp for rezzing a pet. This is a non-issue.

That's preety much how it's supposed to be played.

And this is a non-issue, you get XP from rezzing NPCs too.

Yup... Sadly too many people jump to the "It must be broken" mentality when something isn't working the way they THINK it shuld. The rangers pets are not broken and the class functions just fine (even in events) the way it is. Instead of attacking the class and saying it's defective people need to learn to play it.

This kind of thinking is a side-effect of themepark gameplay where racing to max level is critical so therefore it needs balanced. It actually doesnt matter if 1 method gives slightly more or less xp because there is no massive need to optimise xp per hour. The only issue is that you may level too fast against your will.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

The beefier pets last a lot longer.. like bears. The ranged ones do pretty good as well, like ranged devourers.
