Do people actually dislike Pokemon?

ValuaValua Member Posts: 520

I grew up on Pokemon, I will stand here and say it's the greatest game franchise of all time, I can't understand anyones problem with it?

Pokemon was my first game on my Gameboy, I remember collecting all the cards, the Pokedex toy and going to watch the movies in the cinema. Pokemon isn't just your average game, it's a massive part of gaming history, it's a classic. (currently the second highest selling gaming franchise of all time behind Mario, so I can't be the only one who adores Pokemon.)

But when WoW's Pet Battle System is mentioned in any post theres always people bashing not just WoW but Pokemon too?

Do MMO players really take themselves that serious that they can't enjoy Pokemon? But they can enjoy prancing around as elves fighting dragons etc?

Sorry, it really annoys me, I'm a very loyal Pokemon fan and I know it sounds idiotic - but I judge people who dislike or especially bash Pokemon (you're either too old or take yourself too seriously to have experienced Pokemon fully.)

I, for one, can't wait to play my pet battle system in WoW. I've been wanting a Pokemon MMO for years, it fits the MMO genre so perfectly.

Anyway, Pokemon-WoW fanboi rant over.

Edit; I'd just like to point out I dislike the Pokemon TV series, because to me it's not part of the Pokemon universe I love, it was just a cash cow. The cards and games on the other hand were/are amazing. I made this post about the games of Pokemon.

Pokemon got so big, people who aren't into anime or games learned about it, so those who disliked "nerds" would use it as an insult.  That attitude seems to have spread.  There was nothing wrong with the games.  Best series ever? I'd disagree but I enjoyed Pokemon red on my gameboy, and watched the anime back in grade school.

Just ignore people when they make remarks like that.  Rarely will anything constructive come out of someone who expresses themself with putdowns and ridicule.

I spent my middle school years watching the pokemon cartoon and playing the games, but I don't particularly care for pokemon any longer. Though my students thought it was pretty hilarious when one of them said, "I want to be the very best" and I just picked up and belted out the rest of the song.

Also in my 30s, so I was out of the target audience when it hit big in the states. I saw a couple of episodes and it just seemed very trite and boring. Never bothered with the video games and I've never been into trading card games.

I suppose if I was forced to watch/play it I'd dislike it, otherwise it's just of no concern to me.

While I can totally identify with people who hate the anime, the games..? Adore the games, at 25 when it was not my first game, nor RPG, but way back when.. the characters and creatures certainly caught my eye.

I think a lot of people scoff because the game would appear to be very simple, 4 moves, a few stats.. but the reality is top end competition at *any* of the levels from < 20s to the OP tiers is complicated, incredibly technical and very very exciting!

Whenever I want real PVP I jump on my DS and dive into some HeartGold battles. Much better than anything out these days.

What annoys me about pokemon, to balance it a little.. Nintendo.. MAKE THE GODDAMNED MMORPG ALREADY! It would be the ultimate mmo! Content: check, replayability: check, PVP: check, PVE: check, expansion content: mother freaking check! Sandbox availability: check! Humungous target audience: check! Already balanced gameplay: check, multinational and worldwide tournaments, MLG presence etc: check. Nintendo: FAIL!

Pokemon is rather silly, and the "animated" serie is really crappy made with the most pathetic bad guys ever seen.

So I don´t like Pokemon, no.

  • thekid1thekid1 Member UncommonPosts: 789

Never seen the show or played the games..

What I've seen in commercials and such it all seems very childish and girly to me.

But I grew up with He-man, Mask and Transformers and other cool violent scifi stuff.

I'm too old for Pokemon, besides, I'm still smarting over spending about 150.00 for a couple of Charzard cards my kids wanted which probably have a net worth of 10 cents right now.   (lets not talk about the unopened box set I bought for 185.00 that someone actually stole out of my office at work, who knew?)

But it's true, I do take my MMORPG's pretty serious, even when I'm roleplaying an elf wearing tights fighting dragons.  I don't care for "fluff" in MMO's which is why most asian games don't appeal.

WOW jumped the shark years ago so it really doesn't matter, no one takes that title seriously anymore.

You might wanna recheck your stuff, because last I saw (earlier this year) 1st edition charizards were still worth a bit, and non first edition charizards were still worth like 20-40 bucks. (These are the charizards from the first card set)

people always pretend to dislike the masses favor.

this way they can pretend to be different. most of them most likely dont even know a shit about those things (pokemon here), but it's so cool to say "WoW/pokemon sucks! I R SO SPECIAL NOMNOMNOM!"

"believe me, mike.. i calculated the odds of this working against the odds that i was doing something incredibly stupid… and i did it anyway!"

I grew up with Pokemon, I also think it's one of the best franchises ever made. I actually bought Pokemon Yellow and Gold + a Gameboy Color last week just to play them again.

    However..

I don't like 'clones', or weak spin-offs. And what Blizzard is doing is right now pretty much a joke, and very disrespectful towards their own franchise.

Or you know, some of us might just genuinely not like it.

Also this will make me out to be a bit of a hypocrit but ill say it anyway, is pointing out how people wanna be different really any different itself? alot of people are pointing their fingers at people lately and calling each other poser's. how is this any different?

Pokemon never had anything interesting for me.  If anything when I saw Pokemon Tv Series in tv when I was eating for example, music, graphics and concept irritated me and I was switching channels to anything else.

I don't hate it, but it just does not have anything I like and have few things that I slightly dislike.

  • AngztAngzt Member Posts: 230

example: i dont like chocolate ice.

but why the hell should i flame anyone who eats it? i just don't get it myself and the prob is solved.

i NEVER would make a post about how sucky chocolate icecream is... and how stupid everyone is to eat it.

that's exactly what gamers think they've gotta do tho :)

    got my point?

Im pretty sure everyone understands it thats why there are people who purposely try to be different and try to get people to assimilate to their own opinions, it is also why so many people point it out. its a common concept. thats why i said what i said about pointing it out and how it makes you ( Or me currently) no different. In the end we are all just voicing our opinions on a controversial matter.

I saw it a couple of times on TV, and that was at that age when it was plausible for me to get hooked on something like that.

I hated every second of it. Tried to watch it, but simply couldn't. Switched channels immediately. I found the whole concept and idea annoying and retarded, the animation and visual style utterly repulsive and the hysterical screaming of everyone all the time completely unnecessary.

I like to think of myself as open minded, I can understand many things - even if I do not like them myself, I can understand why someone would like it.

I can understand nostalgia and all the fuzzy feeling that goes with it, but I simply cannot understand this whole Pokemon mania, especially with people who are above 13 years of age.
