...While F2P is clearly the way to go given thier current situation, when will Dev's learn that sticking a "Free" label on a crap sandwich doesn't make the sandwich taste any better. It just gets you a bunch of people who are willing to eat crap for free...
Very well said, sir. This sums up everything in a neat little package.
How many people on this site alone were saying this puppy would go "F2P" at the 6 month mark? Before launch I felt this was a rather dramatic and far-fetched prediction. But, man, were they ever bloody close. Oh well, nice to see the genre continuing down such a brilliant and glorious path.

I love the irony of how much crossover there is between GW2 fans and those declaring that TOR has failed because it is giving players the option of not paying a sub.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
F2P i guess is the model for crap. Real games are subscription :P
You are fast running out of "real games".
LOL seriously. Almost all mmos offer a F2P version, even WoW.
SWTOR has well over 500k subs still and this business move should have happened 4 months ago, if not at launch. This is great for SWTOR.
I think you are confusing F2P with a level limited trial version.
I am glad they are going F2P because I wouldn't have paid to play it, but it is a pretty good time killer when I'm bored. A lot of other people have said it, but I will say it again for clarity. It wasn't the model that killed SWTOR, it was the fact that they released a buggy unfinished game then failed to release fixes and updates in a timely manner. If they would have put out updates faster initially, then chances are a lot more people would have stayed.
Im not confusing anything. what SWTOR is doing is still ultimately a limited trial version as well, they just offer up to level 50.
You must have played a different game because SWTOR is anything but buggy and unfinished. Its the best MMO out there IMO and it just got better.
If you think what Star Wars is doing is the same thing as the WoW 20 level free trial, then I think you are in fact very confused.
SWTOR was very buggy at release, much of that is fixed now but it took them way too long to fix. Content patches have been way too slow for a subscription game. You can always tell a fan boy when they say how great things are that haven't been released yet(or even discussed in detail). Whether or not F2P will be great or bad remains to be seen. To see how successfull the release was just look at how quickly subscriptions dropped off in such a short time after the game was released.
By Fall you may find out there are not that many players around; that's because they would be back to WoW, Rift (still not F2P lol) and soon to be released, GW2, among other games.

Yeah! People who are mad that they don't have to pay $15/month to play TOR are going to switch to GW2. Not paying $15/month to play GW2 will totally make them feel better!

I am sure they will get plenty of people who don't have any money to buy new games. But people left because there wasn't enough content to keep them attached to it, not because "OMG $15 is too much!". That is the problem they need to fix, not the model. Look forward to more development spent on vanity items and less on actual playable content.
That wasn't a rating, that was just MMORPG's estimate regarding how many months it would take the game to go F2P...and I think they were pretty close to right on the money .

Rift continues to show that if you provide value, people will pay a subscription. If they had 500 mill to put behind their game, they very well could make a game that is profitable with a few million subs.
It's like with DRM. If you put out a quality product, the hacking issue is manageable.

It's amazing really what Trion does with their resources. Other MMORPGs need to figure out how to at least match the frequency, quality and amount of content that Trion puts out for Rift. Blizzard is by far the worst offender here, luckily they have enough crack addicts to get by without any new content but with increasing pressure from F2P games this has to change for subscription games to stay competitive.
This ranks right up there with the same disaster that SOE had with DCUO, you make a game thats not good enough nobody will pay to play it. Oh well anybody with half a brain could see this comming full streanght.
Playing from early release I knew this would happen, as did many of us. People don't want to pay a sub to play a single player game with limited co-op & PvP.

What ToR is doing is nothing like that WoW 'level up to level 20' trial. But if that makes you feel better about the failure of a game go ahead and think that.
IMO freemium is only a temporary and last grab solution for existing mmo games that are dying or dead...
Soon all the existing subscription mmo games except WoW will be freemium and then dying because they cant compete with the upcoming wave of AAA B2P and F2P games..
Those that think a game has to have a sub to be good are living with their heads in the sand and or are in their last days of mmo gaming, the days of being charged a monthly sub are nearing an end and will die as the current wave of failed freemium games go dinosaur..
In the near future to offer anything less than a completely steller gaming experience for a monthly subscription fee will be suicide and hopefully that will become more obvious to devs and publishers as time goes by..
If any game deserves the "F2P walk of shame" it is this game. I hope the idiots that were in charge of design were fired in a humiliating fashion and will never work in gaming again.

I would pay 15$ a month to play SWG (even post NGE) than play SWTOR for free.
Crafting, Bioengineering, and Exploration. Those three things are better than the SWTOR storyline.

Niceeeeeeeeeeee I soo waited for this!!!!!

This is why it is a nice strategy to wait out alot of these games instead of paying max prices right away.........

Well played, sir, very well played.
Great news. I was mildly curious about this title but it never met my requirements so I didn't buy it. F2P is a different matter.

Bloody hell, I gave up on SWToR a while ago, ... But I'm quite suprised it's going F2P so soon...

About time!

Wow, totally unexpected. I don't think anyone expected anything like this, especially on this site.....oh, wait...
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???
Be afraid.....The dragons are HERE!

So much failure even Darth Vader agrees - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqhwiXPQ2Dk
Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

Unfortunatley, this has happened before and will happen again.
The Cycle is born anew.
And this is how story about Tortanic end. Good job Bioware and EA. You destroyed another MMO. And only Star Wars mmo out there
So when do we get our money back?
