ok not trying to start a flame war even though i can already hear the moderators screetching but I have never played DoTA 1 or 2 but i have played a bit of LoL and Smite.
I am just wondering if i should give DoTA 2 a whirl but want to know what are the major differences.
(please be on topic this is not a "omg LoL is more fun" or "omg DOTA 2 takes more skill" post)

The key differences:
In LoL, the gameplay is slightly faster, and the map seems smaller.
The mechanics of LoL are geared for casual players, and vary only slightly between heroes (Comparatively)
You cannot block creeps, and cannot deny towers or creeps.
There are Buffs from nuetral creeps.
Team balance isnt a large factor in most non-competition games.
In Dota2, the gameplay is slower, and the maps feels larger.
The mechanics in gereal can be seen as complex. However they are very similar in many characters, yet completely different in others. It is geared more towards a community that already knows how to play, and can be very unforgiving to new players.
You can block/deny creeps, and you can also deny towers.
Team balance is much more important in Dota2, and many times can almost be an auto loss.
There are no buffs granted from nuetral creeps. (Not counting those stolen/used with a heroes abilities)
Similar games, yet completely different in many ways.
team balance and lane roles are extremely important in lol. in fact lol's lane roles/team comps are much more fixed than in dota 2. i actually dont like that part of lol
Within the games:
Dota2 has an incredibly versatile metagame. Junglers are optional, with dual or unorthodox junglers presenting themselves at times. Trilanes, where three allied heroes on the same team group remain in close proximity from the beginning of the game, as well as roamers, where one or more heroes has no set place on the map and moves about as needed, are both common. Lanes and roles are incredibly fluid to the point where attempting to define many heroes, or even predicting how a single 5-hero composition will lane, becomes difficult.
League of Legends has a relatively stable metagame. Convention dictates that an AD carry and a support go bottom, an AP carry goes mid, and a sustainer goes top, with the 5th man- an all but required jungler, left to his devices. These roles have not changed in at least a year of high level gameplay and across multiple tournaments.

What does AP and AD carry mean. I know carry means they carry the team meaning they can effectively take even people who contribute very little along but the acronym has me lost.
I am very interested in getting into MOBA and have downloaded LoL and started to play .I have played Starcraft 2 and Dawn of War so am a little familiar with RTS but not ARTS. I was looking at the gamespot videos of DOTA 2 and am fascinated and hoping to get a clue and key to try it out but I will play LoL for now. I realised while watching the video DOTA 2 is complicated.
