My take on the game so far

PalladinPalladin Member UncommonPosts: 430

OK so I have played all the BWEs and I am still trying to wrap my head around the combat. It truely is diff than anything I have been accustomed to in the past. I like this it is  much more entertaining. I'm not that good at it yet. I ahve to keep reminding myself to move move move. I've also found that all the weapons for each class have specific uses and which one you use really depends on your situations at any given time. Some weapons are good for direct combat and others are good for support. It makes the game interesting ...at least for me.

I like the combat so much so that I find all other games to be uninteresting and have not played much of any game since the last BWE.

I agree, the combat is pretty unique.  I am completely flabbergasted by all the posters here who seem to think that the combat is the same as WoW.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

If you notice, everyone that says that pretty much states "OMG there's action bars and buttons, it's the same was WoW."

Which is like saying "This Bugatti has four tires and a steering wheel, it's just a Honda Civic clone!"

How about saying a Yugo. :-)

There is only so much one can chage to make things different, until we get into VR-type of controllers than it will be different.

    Agreed.

The key to GW2's combat is movement! If you stand still you die! It is obviously more complext than just to keep moving, there are other elements such as damage mitigation, and being somewhat of a holistic player. All players have to do a little bit of tanking, dps and healing. If you just focus on one role, then you're more of a hindrance than any help.

I also agree with Creslin 321, GW2's combat is very different from WOW's; and much more superior in my opinion.

Not to mention they never explain why they are similar and when someone points out the huge differences they leave and not respond back. It's funny really

Block the trolls, don't answer them, so we can remove the garbage from these forums

Exactly. I'm sort of (unpleasantly) surprised some players still are like "I'm going to roll a water elementalist as my main" after having played BWE's. They're gimping themselves so much with just sticking to one weapon set / build or in the case of elementalist attunement. This doesn't only gimp them in sPVP they might not be interested in but they're not really contributing much to the group in PVE either. Because this doesn't affect DE's and other "working together without being in a group" content, they don't even realize this themselves and might learn it the hard way only when doing their first dungeon runs (many of them probably won't learn and go on to complain about elitism instead of trying to adjust their playstyle to be more effective).

These are mostly people used to solid "WoW trinity" roles and afraid/uncomfortable/unwilling to try a different game system. I think as people play the game more and comt to understand how it works, that will change. My girlfriend tried staying in water all the time for BWE1 and did alright, but didn't like it. So much she avoided ele in BWE2. In 3, she tried again, but decided to give attunement swapping a try.

One hour later, and all I hear is maniacal cackling and her stating that Ele is once again her main.

I think the arguement is more "The combat is just like WoW only with a gimmicky dodge button that doesn't do anything. Nothing new or game changing"

I was playing with the hud hidden and found myself loving the game that way. Found the game even more beatiful and immersive that way. The audio cues allowed me to still heal effectively and the way the abillities are set up makes it so theres no need for the bar once your familiar enough with it. Could one even play wow or other games with bars upon bars of abillities in such a way?

The funny thing is most of these comments don't actually come from WoW players

I've had the same problem.  I figure we'll either figure it out over time (I hope so anyway!) or we'll just get owned like the noobs we are!  :P

I think it does make it fun and interesting.  And figuring out the cross class combos is probably going to be end game all by itself!

You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???

The combat is much closer to AoC combat than any other MMO I have played, and despite the general failure of Funcom in that MMO - the combat was (during certain patch periods) a real joy and filled with skill and movement.
  • CaldrinCaldrin Member UncommonPosts: 4,505

sure you get to move around and stuff but when attacknig your cahracter still auto aims at your targeted enemy.. back in closed beta using by gun in ranged pvp i would hardly ever miss even the people running aronud like headless chickens, i could just sit back and kill them without worrying.. hopefully they have sorted that out..

Anyway yes its a tab target system, yes movement is key to taking less damage, yes its a step in the right direction but its somthing AOC did ages ago but there are better combat systems out there in MMORPGs like darkfall and mortal online.. i would not say Tera as i dont like the way you get rooted to the ground when attacking..

So at the end of the day its still a tab target system so similar to the standard MMORPGs combat system but they have tried to make it different.

hopefully other games will take note and start moving away from the standard tab target systems as well..

very true, those guys never have arguments.

i remember a few days ago a topic with many question to say what everyone that play the game think about it and was great didnt see almost no one troll on more than 5 pages.

obvious reason? they need to answer 4-5 question and that is lot of work to those guys. generally they say " NO this game isnt the 2nd Jesus or this is a WoW clone" more than that and give lot of work.

when some of those guys try to use some arguments to defend some false statement we must admit that is petty hilarious reading

Would someone please give me a one paragraph comparison of TSW and GW2's combat. I'm obviously familiar with TSW's and would like understand the differences.

Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe

There really are no "arguments" that can be used to "prove who's right" in this discussion.

It really comes down to "I like the combat system in game X. I don't like the combat system in game Y, it sux". It's all a matter of taste.

Of course, we all try to invalidate opinions that don't agree with ours.

dont like combat system is fine. see some silly guys saying  GW2 is a WoW clone and in same post say they like much more WoW combat system  compared GW2 is ridiculous.  this is just an example because exist much worse. those guys love give opinions but give arguments with opinions is something 90% time you will never see.

is like saying i like much more WoW combat system compared LOTRO....( 100% same combat system like many other WoW based games)

I am having a hard time getting used to the combat myself. In the little bit I played I foumd out real fast if you just stand there and spam attacks you will die pretty fast.

    I miss DAoC
