I've narrowed it down to 4 competitors:
-Shaiya
-Lineage II
-Pirates of the Burning Sea
-Everquest II

(in the order of my preference)

Which is your favorite out of the list, your least favorite, and why?

    - Shaiya .. well no idea what this is but it looks like your average asian grinder running on the origional unreal engine like most of them do. So shitty graphics in this day and age and probally shitty game play.

-L2 .. Well its an asian grinder but probally one of the better ones out there, again using the old unreal engine so its looking a bit old now.

    - POTBS .. Ship combat is awesome, player econamy was awesome when i was playing. Ground combat missions suck donkey balls. Not bad now its free so worth a look.

    - EQII .. One of the better themepark MMORPGs out there and now its f2p its also well worth taking a look.

Out of those I think EQ2 is probally the best if you like fantasy MMORPGs.

I played EQ2 and Shaiya  a long time ago, Shaiya was the best. It doesn't have crap graphics (for some reason the one's shown in the trailer are the "normal" setting graphics. Trust me, "very high" is great.

Well anyway, it's not grinding. There are clear quests, amusing (not "kill 25 alligators")

I played all 4 of them and gotta say I likes Lineage II best of the list. That is the pre-GoD L2 (it does sound a lot like pre-NGE SWG here :p), and I was subscribed for a total of 4 years to the game back then over a preiod of 6 years. During that time I tried a lot of other MMORPG's (including the other 3 on the list) and I kept coming back to L2.

Shaya - Lineage II wanna-be MMORPG but lacking a lot of features Lineage II has, including sieges and meaningful PvP. On the other hand, once you're at a certain level you can reroll and create a character on a 'harder level'. When you hit the 4th tier, you can play a perm-dead char (GL on that one :D)

PotBS - I did like it, because it's not your average MMORPG. You're the captian of a ship, and can sail teh Carrebians. The game includes a lot of unique features, including 'gathering stations' on land like you'll see in RTS games. Combat on the other hand is slow like hell :(

EQ2 - Very good fantasy setting, but not worth to play unless you'll subscribe to it or drop lots of money in the cash shop. On Silver (pay $5 once) the game becomes a bit better, but still very crippled.

If I'd have to pick one of your list right now, I think I'd go for PotBS.

Worth to note that PotBS and EQ2 are both $O€ titles, and $O€ does everything they can to milk every last penny from your wallet. Only for that reason I'd advice against both of them...

Out of that list I've only played Lineage 2 but having played most MMO's out there I have to say that L2 is my all time favorite. When it comes to politics, open world PVP and castle sieges there is nothing out there that comes close, however the lastest update (GOD) kinda killed it for me.
