I did not preorder nor do I intend to play gw2 I just thought it was funny that I got this email already. Does gw2 have an authenticator app or device? I hope for those of you playing that it does.

Did you hover over the link and inspect the "real" link? Might just be a standard phising email you get from all the other MMO's.

I am at work so it wasn't me. Looks like they are going to have serious security issues with this game.
Yeah, of course. Any popular game will have those things.
Just be careful and dont use a mail adress as account name if you used it somewhere else.
If something seems suspicious chang the code, but do so ind'side the game. Never log on in a website.
Check your computer for viruses and malware.
I'm a little surprised that they think there's much profit to be made from trying to sell gold or the like in GW2. The most valuable currencies, like Karma, can't be traded... I wonder how soon before they realize it's simply not worth it. Especially when you consider the lack of gear grind at the end, many gears being soulbound when you get them, etc.

Account security is 100% up to the users. I have never ever had any online account compromised be it a game, forum, email or whatever. Dont download or search pirated software, game cheats or bots and yo wont have any problems plain and simple.
There are the rare occurances where legit websites and such have been compromised (just one example) but thoes kind of attacks are far and few inbetween. Even in thoes cases its because forum goers used the same login and pass for their game and forum account. So once again, the user should have used a different username/pw combo. Forum database hacking is the most common way to secure username and passwords for games. 99.99% of the time its the users fault PERIOD!
So tips on how to not get your accounts stolen.
1. Dont download or search for pirated material
2. Dont download or search for cheats or bots
3. Dont use the same username/password combo for multiple accounts
4. Dont share your accounts
5. Keep AV/Firewall updated
This is wrong. Aion was hacked and a curse website had an advertisement that had a key logger in it (ad hidden in flash.) Rift had a security backdoor issue. SOE got hacked last year. All of these are not the users fault and the issue is not "extremely rare."
I do have a gw1 account and I'm certain I did sign up on the gw2 site for newsletter.

I never said that. I'm saying that to put it immediately on the user 99% of the time and that there's rarely any issues on the companies end is wrong. Not saying ANet has that issue, but other companies have most certainly have had security breaches and it's not the players fault.

The very first sentence of the post said: "Account security is 100% up to the users." He then showed how it isn't 100% up to the users. The list is very helpful but there is no way to be 100% secure on just the user end.

It's a strange one for them to send but is legit. Still, everyone should be weary of any links etc. like others here are saying.
Since you seemed to miss that part. The legit site getting compromised was infact Cursed so atleast we were on the same page there. I'll change my 100% users responsability to 99.99% ;-P
Also, this was just a few things off the top of my head, not counting things like fishing emails and stuff like that.
I am getting the same e-mails.
However, the adress i have my GW and GW2 account on exists purely for that reason and has not been used ot registered with anything else.
Weird.
Its legit, the mail of the sender is from arenanet. Its the one they use for guild wars 2 and the one for accounts.
People need to stop overreacting, its a bug on their side most likely.
Got this email around midnight this morning.
Account is completely locked out, shows my email doesnt exist in their system. I never clicked on the email or anything, starting to look like they have a problem.
Yep I got the e-mail this morning and was locked out of my account by the time I got home from work. I was wondering if this happened to anyone else... now I know! (not that it will get my account back >.>)
