When does it open up.

For those playing, when does the game open up a bit ( i am still in tutorial ) meaning I can go my own way and explore around rather than be lead from place to place ?

( i just started and am curious )

    level 12+ i would say

It "opens up" the second you leave the tutorial zone , wich takes what  5 minutes.. But to get a feel of the game, leave the first 1-10 zone

I'm level 26 and it's open, i'm in the zone North of Lion's Arch, and it's awesome, there's like 2 hearts quests, rest is go out on your own will. All i'm trying to do is find crafting mats so I can levle cooking and artificing. Just stock-piling things :)

But once you get out of the level 15 zones, you will start to see a change, and once you leave the level 15-25, it really opens up.

I'm not sure it ever does. I'm I'm my mid 40s and while each zone is jam packed with content you can transverse the areas really quickly, even on foot. And there's sort of a boxed in feel because each zone is instanced.

Strange because even tho i use instant teleport a lot, i never felt that "boxing" feeling.. Maybe later on

Edit : Actually i'm trying to get zones to 100% and it happened a few times that i went "Wow ok, i didn't know that was still part of this zone"

Why wouldn't you, at the very least, wait until you finished the tutorial before asking this question?

If you had this thread wouldn't have been required. It takes ten to fifteen minutes tops to complete the tutorial and move on, this is the very definition of judging something before you have seen the whole picture.

This is the exact type of behavior we need to curb for this industry, and the fans of this particular genre of gaming, to move forward.

While the zones are big, and again, layered with abunch of content, its so easy to get from one end to the other in no time, that they feel smaller then they actually are. Combined with being funneled into exits I really get a monster hunter type feel of being boxed in. Although on a larger scale.

I'd say it opens up quite quickly, at 1-15  theres already about 5 zones you can go to through lions arch, and the exploration you can do is great, it took me about 3 hours just to get through lions arch if not longer, looking for secret passages for chests and jumping quests, discovering all there was to see.

I personally didn't get the boxed feeling, but i did run into mountains a few times wanting to jump over them, before realizing it was the zones border, but mostly i got lost exploring, doing events, always under the impression i was in an open breathing world.

Thanks guys for the answers ! Looking forward to leveling up some.

That said, one question at any point are there multiple leveling areas for a level range ?

So, it is big, layered, smaller, funneled, boxed, and larger?

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

I think the OP is asking if the land mass in each zone gets bigger. No it doesn't. Some are bigger than others, the Sylvari 1-15 is noticeably larger than all the other 1-15 zones. The land mass in GW2 isn't big, but there is just as much content in them as any other MMO. It's like taking Oblivion and Skyrim.. Oblivion was larger in term of land mass yet Skyrim was filled with much more stuff.

As soon as you leave the tutorial area (lvl 2) you can freely go in any of the five (lvl 1-15) zones (one for each race).

And there is that downgrade system of whatever is called; you can go back to lower level zones even if you are high level.

Your character's level is downed (to match with the level of the area you are in) but you still get xp and loot to your appropriate (real) level.

It doesn't feel like a virtual world. It's a fun time and I'm enjoying myself, but its not a virtual world my character exists in once I'm done getting what I need out of it. I do feel boxed in. I can't just wander off. I get funneled into exits. It is what it is. They sacrificed scale for convenience.

Yes, there are multiple zones for every level.

I guess from GW1 i was worried about this approach. I am enjoying it however.

    thanks

GW2 does, though, close down after the starter zones. It satrts to get a bit grindy on mobs and DEs as you get further along if just leveling via PvE. The rides in the themepark get spaced further apart later on in the game.

There are multiple zones per level. At start you get to chose from 5 zones of level 1-15. Then around 4 (may be wrong here) zones of level 15-25.

The zones are always "Boxes" which imho is one of the only flaws of this game... they could've made it like WoW where zones feel natural (even though WoW zones are actually the same - boxes with exits, only exists are seamless). When you look at your map and see everything in tidy rectangles it really hurts your eye somewhat...

If you make effort to ignore the boxes - game is very living, active and fun, world really feels like endless (just wander around a capital city - theyre HUGE! and zones are even bigger). And the wanderlust... oh wanderlust. It's SO hard to stay on path, you get distracted here and there, constantly, its so fun!
