Some of this was posted in another thread, which was locked as I osted it likely due to the flamebait the thread had become. But I wanted to repost it in a non-falme thread, as well as some other information, some of which ive also posted in various other threads but wanted to kind of compile a litle list to clear up some incorrect information ive seen thrown around, as well as some isgivings about the state of the game and what there is to do:
Youre only given gear in the instanced PvP. In WvW, you have the same gear as in PVE. You can get much better gear through earning karma and badges in WvW. When I say much better, thats relative to GW2 gear scaling. Your not going to see massive jumps in gear like you do in many othe rgames like WAR and WoW, but they definitely give you an edge. Progression is there, its just not like many other games, like WoW, where its OMG your gearscore sucks you have absolutely no chance of being useful to our group.
Also similar to the gear, youre only given every skill and max Trait Points in the instanced PvP. Once again in WvW, you have the same skills and Traits as in PvE. A level 1 going into WvW only has their weapon skils + 1 heal, no Utility or Elite skills at all, and no trait points. Someone who progresses to 80 can unlock most, if not every Utility and Elite Skill, but also has 70 points to spend in Traits. Traits make a big difference too. For example a thif can spend 30 points in their 2nd line of traits giving them a much higher % to crit (300 more Precision), as well as a 30% increase to crit damage. Then within each trait line you also get 3 static, and 3 of your choosing, buffs/procs. Things like increased durations of effects, increased damage with X weapon, increasd buff durations, extra effects added to certain categories of skills, increased max initiative for thief, increased Initiatve regen, for thief, etc.
As you can see there is way more progression than people like to give it credit for. But lower level players do still have some chance against you if they play well enough. Its not absolutely pointless to try to go into fights without all of that stuff, you just wont perform as well.
*****Thats the end of my other post
Now onto other subjects.
1 - Waiting on skill cooldowns / spamming 1 skill - Ive seen a lot of people talking about not liking the combat due to using their skills, then waiting on cooldowns and just spamming 1 button. Well 1st things 1st, that 1 button youre "spamming" doesnt need to be spammed. By default, its set to auto attack. So you actually just have to press it once. You can also change any of your other skills to be auto attack instead, then yes youll need to spam your #1 skill. As for the cooldowns. Why are you waiting? Switch weapons/ attunements/packs, and you ave another full bar of skills not on cooldown. Cast those, switch back and most of your 1st set will be done, or nearly done, with cooldown.
2 - Repetetive zoning / instancing - This is not the entire game. This is only happening to people who are blowing through several quest at a time in the Personal Story. The personals tory quests ar einstanced, which requires zoning in and out of maps and getting put back into overflow. If youre just going to a map to explore and do hearts and DEs, youw ill load 1 time to get into the zone, or to travel between waypoints, and thats all. Everyone isnt rezoning every 5 minutes a sthey run around the map. Also once youre out of overflow and in the main channel, you wont get put back into overflow unless you log out or leave the zone. People seem to have a habit of making it sound like theyre constantly getting popped in and out of overflow for no good reason. Leave the zone = lose yous pot for someone still in the zone to leave overflow. If youre just running to and from your Story quests, it doesnt matter one bit if youre in overflow or not anyway. Youre going to be entering an instance anyway.
3 - Zerg Wars - PvE - A lot of people bring up things like the game is just zerging, and theres nothing else to do. Well it is the 1st week the game is out, loads of people in the early areas zerging is going to happen in ANY MMO unless you spawn every player in a different place in the world and have level 1 content everywhere in the world. But what happens in any other MMO? Youre competing with the zerg to get credit for your work. Think weve all experienced at least 1 game launch where there were things happening like you get a mob down 90%, someone else runs up and spikes it for the kill blow, quest credit, and loot. Or you have melees unable to compete with ranged classes if its a system where 1st hit tags the mob as credit for you. Lots of things of that nature. In any situation though, its massive groups of people running around killing everything in the earlier zone sbecause everyone started together and the majority are at similar point sint heir progress. In GW2 though everyone is getting credit for mobs they fight, without dumb mechanics like 1st hit tagging, or killing blow gets credit, or most dps gets credit, etc. You participate = you get credit without havin to worry about KSing others, or others KSing you, and the sweet sweet tears of someones nerd rage flowing into chat over it every 5 minutes. In time, the zerg will thin out, people will be spread across all levels and all zones, and youll have smaller more organized groups. In the meantime, if you dont like being part of the zerg, you can still progress just fine in several other ways, and by finding the DEs that arent camped constantly.
4 - Zerg Wars - PvP - Some people, even in game, dont seem to be aware of the fact that theyre going to be rotating which servers are fighting which constantly. Ive seen a lot of complaining that the need to balance the servers, or that theyre going to switch to the winning server, etc because as it is now you have a couple, like Jade Quarry, that are very heavily populated, and the 2 servers theyre against are lower pop and the zerg is winning. Well, in a week or 2, the tables might be turned and you might be the high pop vs low pop server. You dont know which server youll be up against in the coming weeks, and you wont always be fighting that same zerg. The higher pop servers will also be fighting eachother at times too, so theyll get slap eachother around in an equal battle as well.
5 - Zerg Wars - PvP part 2 - As a result of part 1 and the current imbalances, people are also saying theres no point in trying to do WvW its just you vs a zerg. I see a lot of those same people spend hours doing nothing but charging head on into their main force as if there is only 1 objective in the map. Very rarely have i seen people actually communicate and put together smallforces to use guerilla tactics and pick off smaller groups of people who arent there with the main zerg camping 1 area, or going to take over smaller objectives to make some headway. One thing with the big zergs is they tend to be a big dumb herd of lemmings. The majority of them will blindly follow eachother around and if a bunch of them sit in 1 area, the majority do also. While some of your people are having fun feeding free points to the zerg and keeping them occupied, call out another objective to take and try to get a few together to go take it.
6 - Theres nothing to do but the same old Kill / Collect quests - Yes these types of things do exist. But along with that there also hearts and DEs that involve interacting with the environment to trigger things, and obtaining special tools to perform specific tasks like experimenting on wildlife, etc. Aside fromt hat you can also progress a decent amount through completing map unlocks. Theres also the "jumping puzzles"
7 - Did i mention mothereffing jumping puzzles?! - It might sound kind of lame to some people, but if you havent tried them, and especially if you want a break from the normal grind and want to do somthing you dont normally see much of in MMOs, TRY THEM. Theyre a blast to go through at least once. If you dont know what Im talking about heres a few examples:
