In another thread I mentioned that I have an illness that has affected both my motor skills and aggressiveness. I have a real problem with timely button crunching and mousing, and the disease has caused me to be emotionally fretful about fighting generally. Still, I have managed to get by, even though I don't enjoy it very much. The last new MMO I played for any length was SWTOR, where I actually reached level cap with a number of classes.
First, to overcome my physical and emotional limitations I made a habit of studying online class guides so I was reasonably assured of making good choices in the skill tree.
Second, I bought a Naga Razor, which allowed me setup macros for varying circumstances, thereby overcoming my physical limitations.
Also, I avoided squads with a passion. Squads affect me emotionally because I worry about letting mates down, and others' tendancy to rush through instances, which really upsets me to the point that I want to logoff immediately.
Finally, I would grind until I was over-leveled, which later made my quests a good deal easier.
Some may disapprove of my strategy, but until they've tried playing with hands and fingers that don't always respond they don't get the depth of my problem.
Coincidentally, I've since had to give up on several MMOs because I simply can't deal with the stress. But I love online gaming and I'm still hopeful of finding something that meets my diminishing capabilities.
Not meaning to offend, but are you sure that combat orientated games are for you? Wouldn't something like second life be more your thing?
Seriously, I so HAVE it had with those people always yelling "MORE DIFFICULT" please. Why are the devs always listen to them? I am really pissed. First The Secret World, which I quit because I died 2000 times. And now with GW2 it is the same again. The difficulty was just right in the late beta, but a few people whined with Esports mentality, some 16 year old action zergers asked for more hardcore, and now beyond level 16 both my Mesmer and my Thief are unplayable. I HATE those people. Why must they always cater THEM? While the world is fully crowded you get along, but play on irregular times, and those classes are a DAMN CHORE. And worse, the story instances are nightmares! I even took a friend along, and we died several times, even had to just ignore some instances, because even with two we simply could not do it, and to hell with levelling, because the DAMN GAME levels you down again, no matter.
I am so fed up with developers always listen to this hardcore crowd who ruin every game because they need games to be a dick size contest to PROVE themselves!

Dumbed down is good. Dumbed down is GREAT, because it makes me feel the HERO and not the useless twat I am for free in RL 24/7 already thank you very much.
But do you feel a hero if all you got to do is press the "I win" button? I like MMO's and games because I can feel like I accomplish something, get the dopomine slushing through my diseased body, at a steady predictable, achievable pace. But the dopomin doesn't come if it is to easy. A hard but won fight, THAT gives that nice rush.
To easy and it there is no reward. It is to easy like solving a customers advanced IT problem (turn your computer on, now turn the monitor around so the shiny surface is facing you. Open your eyes. Your welcome) which doesn't give me a dopomine reward but a urge to slit my wrists.
Make me dodge, make me worry about whether the heal is going to become available in time with just a sliver of health remaining. Make me welcome a fellow player coming in to assist with a mob. Test me, challenge me, then reward me.
That is gaming. If you want easy mode, pay me and I will play the game to end level for you and hand you the "100% complete account".
LOL ... I was initially tempted to ask the same thing, but I lack the hubris to castigate others, mostly because I'm usually totally unfamiliar with their capabilities, limitations, and their individual hardware circumstances (read: lag).
That said, and you need to read the post immediately before yours, I suffered through TSW for nearly a month and don't recall ever dying. Mind you, I'm not a great player, but I do tend toward reading class guides and I generally observe mobs before I jump into them. I'm also real big on using cover and concealment when applicable; for instance, in the first world, at the junkyard, I mostly stayed on top of the junked cars when I was fighting the big mechanical mobs. I also realized quite early on that mobility was my friend -- I created macros with my Razor Naga, and when fighting I ALWAYS stayed on the move, whether side to side, or running circles around the target. A good mix of Active and Passive skills, whereby I was self-healing sufficiently didn't hurt either.
Also -- and this is probably most important of all -- I hate dying, I'm a girl, and I lack the testosterone that prevents me running away when I think I'm about to get my tail kicked.
I've been playing MMOs for a long time, but I NEVER assume I know everything before I begin a new game.

Of course ... have you seen a hero ever NOT win? To spice things up, just have the hero's life go down to 10% before winning.
That is gaming. If you want easy mode, pay me and I will play the game to end level for you and hand you the "100% complete account".
You are already late on the party. There are plenty of people selling accounts and leveling service. Do you really want to do that?
I am going to try to keep this short as we all have such great MMO’s or other leisure activities to get back to.
You are never going to see the changes that are being made to MMO’s and gaming use negative phraseology. So MMO’s and lobby-based co-op are not going to get used in the same sentence. But that is the way we are heading, they just spin the wording so it sounds good.
This is just marketing, they use F2P when the games are not free. Free transfers as an excuse for not announcing server closures. The in game tools like LFD and WvW gameplay do not have a bad image as yet, so they are used in MMO’s. Calling something Lobby gameplay has bad connotations but that’s what LFD and WvW is pushing us towards.
Fragmented, non open world, instant travel MMO’s. Lobby games by any other name.
It is not only sounding good .. but it is good (at least for many). Otherwise, we won't be heading down that direction.
Personally i don't care much about labels. I use "lobby-based co-op content" all the time, and you know i LIKE it.

It's a profession issue. My ranger can easily solo 10+ levels above. I rolled an Ele and she struggles at times with same level content. Same for my friends necro.

Scott, while there may be alot of truth to that, I'm actualy also alot less pessimistic recently then I have been. I think the underperformance by recent releases has demonstrated that new titles can't keep trying to do the same things that every other title does and appealing to the same market segment and expect to do well. Though that market segment may be large, it is finite....and I think that lesson is starting to hit home with Developers and Publishers. I see alot of games in the wings being built that are trying to do new and different things and appeal to different types of audiences. Some invariably will try the "Lobby-Based Co-Op" route...but others definately not. The fact that Dev's and publishers are finally trying to experiment more and divert from established formula's to break into the market (or make a new one for themselves) means (IMO) we've got a much better chance of seeing games that match our individual preferences.
For example, one game I've got my eyes on right now is Pathfinder Online....which is definately more of a "virtual world" type game then a lobby/co-op. Then you've got folks like Smedley of all people saying he's actualy drawing some inspiration from EvE ( Maybe lip-service, but PS2 is actualy looking pretty interesting to me). Anyway, I'm actualy less pessimistic then I've been in quite some time.
After 60 sec you are lvl 10 , you got a mount and all, in fact the only thing you do is accepting the quest and the game do everything for you. That a game for YOU. no joke there..
Oh god yeah, I played that one. When I saw the auto-move to the mission area the instant you accept a quest, plus the constant link on the right to click to go to the area or the NPC for accepting/completing a quest, I went "Are you kidding me? Where the hell is the challenge?". Not to mention the stupidly easy fights, constant supply of bankable active potion that you can set to auto-heal you at specific amounts of health and mana, the ability to have the game auto-fight for you while you're offline...I swear they made that game for 8 year olds.
In another thread I mentioned that I have an illness that has affected both my motor skills and aggressiveness. Simphanatic,
Sorry to hear about your situation. Have you considered branching out into other types of gaming? I'm not sure what your tastes are but there are alot of different types of games played online or partialy online that aren't overly dependent on motor skill or reaction times.
For example, I personaly spend most of my game time these days playing PBEM Turn Based Strategy War Games. No real motor skill component there. There are even games of that sort that have an "online" play component...kinda similar to old LAN based play, except it's over the internet. They are mostly turn based, or pseudo-turn based...so speed/accuracy of input isn't really a factor. Most of them are "fighting" or "war" based games...but much of the player communities I've experienced (including your opponents) are a pretty freindly lot.... usualy more interested in exchanging e-mails/chat about the strategy of the games then beating up on opponents.
You've also got the virtual table-top/D&D role-playing based services. Places like Roll20.net or FantasyGrounds.com.... again no real issue with motor skill limitations there..... it's essentialy PnP gaming but done online. Might take a little time but, you can probably find a good group to get into.
In terms of the MMO style of game...I haven't tried it, but I've heard some good things about "A Tale in the Desert"... no actual combat in that game....so probably not that motor-skill sensitive.
Anyways if you want more info on any of the above....or I can help out in any way, just shoot me a PM.
What happened to WoW,dumbed down to the bottom, this post doesnt make any sense.
Dumbed down is good. Dumbed down is GREAT, because it makes me feel the HERO and not the useless twat I am for free in RL 24/7 already thank you very much.
I get pissed off at the hardcore gamers but for different reasons. I come on and read about how people get pissed cause stuff is dumbed down when there still is a harder difficulty for them to do. Listen if you want a super hard challenge you can only complete with a group of close friends and 12 hours of planning great you should get that. If I want a less challenging version of the story that I can do in 2 hours with a pug I should be able to do that too. Me getting my version doesn't dumb down your version but Hardcore players seem to think it does, like I'm not worthy to go through the content unless I do it on a super hardcore mode. I've always been a fan of having easy versions of things everyone can do, and having harder versions with better loot only hardcore people can do, seems fair to me. Of course you don't get any better gear in GW2 for doing the harder version so not sure what the point of having it is...

Yeah this ...
I don't play MMO like a job anymore. I don't want raid schedule, practice, and so on. Wipe a few times, learn the fight .. beat the boss in 2 hours .. that sounds right.
and iam sick and tired of people who want to 1-2-3 hit R.I.P. everything. Too lazy to take a challenge and inpatient. You dont observe your encounters , you dont learn from your dirtnaps. In fact most likely you just jump with the same tactics into an encounter over and over again till you get frustrated.
And now your pointing your finger at us , the ones who enjoy a challenge ...who study encounters to create builds that are more effective and most likely result in success. And trust me there a 90% solution to all ingame encounters.
Without the crowd youre so tired of , youd play silly dumbed down sesamee street level encounters ..think bout it

That is obviously not true. No amount of thinking can get pass hard mode raiding without hours of wiping to practice maneuvers.
Spending 2 hours to learn a fight .. sure .. that is over-coming a challenging.
Spending 2 months to get through a boss .. please .. that is overkill.

I think this is the crux of it all, right here.
RPGs have you playing the role of a character. This character is NOT me. He has no idea what a computer is or what a car does. On the other hand, I have no clue how to wield a sword or throw spells.
In old time RPGs, one's character was the character in the game, not in real life. Many of the gamers today think that they are the ones in the game. They think that their manual dexterity is their character's ability. They believe with all their heart that they, themselves, are wielding that sword, throwing that spell. That is how they enjoy the game.
Ever role play a dumb fighter? How about an overconfident mage? Won't get you into many groups, let me tell you. My character in game does not understand "game mechanics." He understands what he understands. In a dumb fighter, that isn't much That overconfident mage thinks he can take on anything, many times to his party's detriment.
No, the games made today are geared towards players who think that they are the character in real life. What they know and can do, their character knows and can do. Their character in game apparently has access to wikis, YouTube, and Google. That is what most players want, so I cannot blame the game makers.
Remember when games used to have places to write up your own biography?
PS: Wow... 7 pages of posts @ 50 posts/page.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Yeah man, me too. I'm so sick of people that think differently than me and have opinions that aren't exactly like mine. I mean, why can't everyone just be exactly like me? Then the world would be a better place, because that's what I think.
I'm also a more thoughtful, tactical gamer and that's the reason why I never play Scout in TF2, for example - I know I would suck badly while I excell at more tactical types like engis and pyros. Scouts, thieves and classes like that are played for twitchy adrenaline rush. Some people enjoy that and excell at it while some enjoy a more leisurely pace. Imo a good game should offer options to different playstyles and TF2's success is directly attributable to that. GW2 offers a similar range of choice, so why are you gimping yourself when it is quite obvious thief's playstyle is not for you?

That is a good question, while thieves are easier than mesmers they are still not the perfect class for someone that thinks hard is bad.
A Guardian or a warrior is easier to play, or a necro for that matter.
I like the thief because I live as long as move, but if I stop up for a moment I go down. A warrior can be lot slower and move less while still surviving, at least if you specc right.

Oh, I wouldn't say "easier", just "different." Different classes utilize different player skills and capabilities - and every person in the world is different. Imo it's just a matter of knowing yourself, where your strengths and weaknesses are and using this for your benefit rather than trying to go through a brick wall. Imo thief is not "harder" to play than other classes, it just uses more of the actiony, twitchy type of skill rather than deliberate, tactical one. It all depends on whether you are playing the role that is best suited for you as an individual.
Imo, from all I've read Eli would be better off with a ranged class that would give him breathing space to control the situation at some distance. Maybe a ranger or a properly specced engineer?

I hope this is a troll because GW2 and TOR are probably the easiest MMOs to come out as of late. The battles individually may be easy sometimes, but thats not the point of those arguments. The point of those arguments is that AI is too simple, the leveling curve doesn't exist or is a slight hill, the learning curve is non-existent. People long for a game with the complexity of EvE, but in a fantasy setting and maybe not a full sandbox

@Elikal
and iam sick and tired of people who want to 1-2-3 hit R.I.P.
No, that is a challenge you are not up for
A note on "Raids":
If youre in a guild/clan full of asshats things can get difficult indeed . Selfish , selfcentered and lootgreedy knuckleheads
gathered up together often result in stress and frustration.
On the other hand a good oiled machine of laid back relaxed people who respect each other are more likely to chew up
all content a game can throw at them.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
Just Guild wars 2 Love it no comments on that one....
Guild wars 2 is awesome, yesterday took a dungeon with guild mates/clan and we took about 2hours to clear lvl 30 dungeon..
Yeah man, me too. I'm so sick of people that think differently than me and have opinions that aren't exactly like mine. I mean, why can't everyone just be exactly like me? Then the world would be a better place, because that's what I think.
Gee Eli, why are you playing a thief then?
