Hey guys. I don't start threads often, but I'm perplexed at this potential tech issue on my end....... but is it really on my end? I looked up the problem on Google and apparently others are having the same thing happen to them, namely their PC getting a black or blue screen or just suddenly "stuttering" and then restarting completely while playing GW2. I've checked my CPU heat, I don't think that's the problem, and all my drivers are up to date, but still I and others are experiencing this rather game breaking bug.
It doesn't happen on other games, and up until yesterday it never happened in GW2 either. Now suddenly, I could find myself doing any number of random in-game things and have to wait for my computer to boot up again, and it's getting annoying.
I haven't had many of the minor issues people are kvetching about day and night here, but when a game turns your computer off, you start to get a little irritated. I haven't seen a thread about this, and maybe the issue is rare, but if anyone has any info maybe they could fill me in.
Sound like either a memory issue or your GPU is overheating. What message do you get on the BSOD?
Yep, that sure sounds like a power supply issue. The Thermaltake Purepower line is junk, of the sort that you should consider replacing even if you weren't having immediate problems. Get a proper power supply and the problems may go away. This will get the job done:
Also, I'd advise against playing any games (not just GW2) until you replace your power supply. You don't want the power supply to fry everything so that you have to replace the entire computer, not just the power supply. It may well have already damaged other components, but even if not, it's likely working on it and putting an undue strain on other hardware.
Either that or the system continously overheating.
Her specs are very low end.
All those people that have those problems are trying to run the game with to high specs on to low systems.

For anyone having these issues with GW2, or any other games for that matter, and are playing on a laptop I can almost guarantee it's a heating issue. The fact that you might only be experiencing it with GW2 isn't really relevant as Quiz has already stated it only takes a single game that pushes your system for you to notice the issue. In MOST cases laptops suddenly overheating are typically due to dust buildup inside the case which can be a pain to clear out if you aren't comfortable taking one apart. This is just one of the drawbacks of laptops. I am speaking from personal experience with my Asus G73JH which had the EXACT same problem described in this thread and once I took apart the case and removed the dust it was like day one all over again.
Controlpanel->System and security->Administrationtools->logs (or something like that, my windows is in Swedish)->windowslogs-systemlog.
It should give us an errorcode.
A friend actually also bluescreens at times when he zones.
There are several possibilities but I dont think it is the game since it is relatively rare.
I see 3 high possibilities:
1. a single byte, likely on the GPU ram but might be on the system ram, is burnt. If this is on the higher texture ram it would only happen when you play games which uses a lot of textures and far from always.
Confirmation: there are programs to check disk, like http://www.memtest86.com/. Download it, burn it to a CD and boot from it. Let it run and see if it gives you any errors. If it does you must figure out where they are, ram, GFX card or in worst case, CPU cash (happened to a buddy of mine, took me a week to figure out what bluescreened him once every 12 hours at seeming randomly). IF you get error in the program, PM me and we figure it out.
Solution: Replace bad part.
2. Heat. Some part of your computer (likely the GPU) is overheating.
Confirmation: Try taking off the sides of the computer which changes the airflow and see if the problem acts the same.
Solution: put in some fans.
3. Crap PSU. The PSU can drive your GFX card at maximum.
Confirmation: it should say so inthe logs.
Solution: Get a new PSU, preferably a larger from someone competent like Corsair or OCZ.
It could also be a software issue though. My buddy is running XP, maybe you are too? Installing W7 on it migyt fix the issue but that is really just a guess and only good if you are sure that it isnt one of those 3 hardware problems.
The bestsolution which also is the most expensive is to get a new computer, yours is somewhat ancient and the game look a lot better with a modern machine that can max it out.

The game or my pc?
probably a little of both.
GW2 do have some issues, my poor laptop actually becomes hot after a few hours (never seen that before on it). My desktop onthe other hand have had no client based problems whatsoever.
Great FPS, no crashes or login issues.
Optimizing the game which will happen with time probably will help but I am sure your PC at least is partly to blame here.
PROTIP: Limit your FPS to 60. You can do so under video settings in GW2. Otherwise, it will max out your hardware. You may even try 30, but I prefer 60.
Good luck.

My PC just completely shut down 2 hours ago while playing. No warning just the black screen and the sound of a running computer fading away. I booted again and checked my core temp and it turned out all my cores were at 99 degrees Celcius. That's the point where my PC shuts itself down to prevent any damage.
The temperature probably dropped a lot between when the computer shut itself down and when you were able to get into the BIOS to check temperatures. If it was still 99 C when you got into the BIOS, then you've got a severe overheating problem and should address it immediately. Make sure that the heatsink on your processor is firmly attached, and not clogged with dust.
I've played a good amount of Beta's and other gold release MMO's to not have ecountered this before. It's soley tied to Guild Wars 2 now. When playing my system will get super hot and then it shuts down black screen.. Reboots and brings me to the "Start Windows In Normal" mode options.
So you'll concede that your computer gets super hot, but insist that that isn't the problem? Gaming laptops are very prone to overheating problems. When's the last time you opened up your laptop to clean out the dust? If the answer is "never", then that's likely to be the problem unless your laptop is pretty new.
Originally posted by OhMyGoth So, i took out my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5570) and put in my very old Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS and i had no problems.
Make sure you've got the latest drivers installed properly. For a Radeon HD 5570, that would be Catalyst 12.8. Uninstall your video drivers entirely, then reinstall them from scratch. Switching from Nvidia cards to AMD or the other way around can be problematic if the old drivers aren't completely gone.
So I'm pretty confident that whatever this issue is.. It is being caused by Guild Wars 2.. Either through memory leak or something up with the driver interaction. Although again when I have driver issues, it does not totally reboot my computer to having to log back into windows..
Driver issues can easily cause blue screens, but I haven't heard of them rebooting a computer entirely.
Originally posted by Vapors Actually youre game should not crash with this hardware, I have a bit worser hardware and I can stand in 100 enemies while they bash me in WvWvW, seems theyre engine working pretty good. But for some friends having same issue, i told them to reinstall the game, ppl in warhammer/tsw had same crash problems with good hardware, after reinstall it worked ...strange
It was suggested to me by an ex pc-tech friend of mine to do the compressed air thing, so with that I have a lot of suggestions in this thread. I've just been watching some Netflix until the hardware store opens (I need a screwdriver)... but if nothing else works, I'll try reinstalling. The thing is, like I said I was able to play all the betas and the release for days without any problems. *shrug* I'll figure it out eventually.
Don't just run out and buy a random power supply that is different from the one you had but not necessarily better. Power supplies are tricky, as it's hard to know what you're getting. Even if you can find good reviews, they're hard to read, as it's not a simple performance issue. The one I linked for you is good, but if you buy something at random, it won't necessarily be any better than what you're replacing.
This may just be a bug in the GW2 code that is causing a crash. I.E. if you're not having problems with your other software too, don't panic.
A bug in a game could easily make the game crash while leaving the rest of the system running, but if you're getting a blue screen, that's not a simple software error.

Yes my laptop is fairly new and I do try and get to dust mites once in a while. I'm not saying my laptop is perfect but it has had only really focused use on gaming and and I've also installed Fruity Loops 10 (Music program on it).
Obviously if my laptop is getting hot it is the computer that is getting freaking hot and wanting to shutdown for protectection. But this game is basically the ONLY title / program that I've used that causes this issue. It could be poor optimization on their part IDK.
Plz when you quote me quote my entire post not just snipits. I hate when folks try to pick a line out of a post and then comment on it. It makes it seem like your nitpicking my statement just to counter it and people see your quote and take my post out of context.
I seriously believe that my issue is tied into the way GW2 is performing on my setup that causes it to overheat and shutdown. I'd be more understanding of this. IF it had happen with any other title or program that I've ran and that is many, many over the time I've had my laptop.
I run these programs on their higest setttings, and have noticed when my system might not be keeping up and parts and where it starts to chug down or may CTD or if I get some type of error with my dirvers and graphics card and the game closes itself..
BUT.. When I run into a situation that ONLY happens with one specific program I have to try and link the facts. This happens only with GW2 and has happened before while playing GW2's Betas..
No other program makes my laptop respond like it does with this game. It's not just something about dustmites or power supply. Because I would've experienced this before of the course of my regular use of my laptop. I've never had any other issue come close to re-creating this one.
I know you're a fan of the game.. I'm a fan of the game also.. So I'm not trying to bash GW2, but nothing is perfect (We know this).. So I can't just concede and say..
"Oh Guild Wars 2 is overheating my system and shutting down my comp.. Well this is the only program that does this.. So it must be my laptops fault.. Shitty Asus G73S.. You suck.. GW2 is Gawd.."
I'm sorry just not happening..
PM before you report at least or you could just block.

The trouble with quoting entire posts is that it makes the nested quotes get really long. A thread becomes a horrible pain to read if every post is three pages of quoted stuff followed by a single paragraph that is the "new" reply. I try not to take things out of context, but I really just want to quote enough to make it clear what I'm replying to.

It's quite possible that Guild Wars 2 pushes your hardware harder than most games. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Let's not effusively praise software for performing poorly because it's unable to take full advantage of the hardware available to it.
Whether I'm a fan of GW2 has nothing to do with it. I've never played the game.

Buy a fan. I paid 6.99 for a little 120V 4" inch fan. I blow it accross my laptop and bye bye overheat (blue screens).
Yeah I tried 60 and I don't want to go to 30.. my FPS isn't that great to begin with. Thanks for the suggestion.

Blue screen is caused by operating system failing and/or hardware being in bad shape. Nothing to do with gw2.
It could be any other game or application causing stress to your PC.

Try this : http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/intro.aspx
- Choose Guild Wars 2 from the drop down menu.
- Accept at the plug in request to run on your system as per it needs it to run the test.
- That website been out for years no need to be affraid of it.
- It will tell you what you need to change to run the game at minimum and maximum spec.
Hope this will help you out
