Funny thing most attacks on the no resource system in GW2 talk about pvp combat and set wow as example. In wow around half the classes use mana as a resource, which regenerates quite slowly i.e. it adds a strategic element to long pve fights, not to pvp.
In order for resources to become meaningful in pvp they must generate and spend quickly. Gw2 does it differently, you have 1-2 short rotations (including weapon swapping) and 2-3 skills in each weapon combo that work much better if you employ them at the right moment and situation. Its also strategy, but without the element of attrition.
Add utility skills, and the fact that most of the advantages traits give can be changed before a fight and you have as much complexity as you want. You just have to look for it. Ofc you could also just mash buttons, but you can do that in any other game too-
Ye the way they did some class specific mechanism and resource (most class do use specific resource, they are not mana, but still) make a lot more sense to me rather than slapping a global resource not half the class use properly like mana used to be and warrior type of class had no resource. There is also no global cool down, those games with global cool down feel so cheaply made if you are an old mmo gamer like me because in early mmo skill were mostly controlled by cool downs and animation timers just like it is now in GW2.

The problem is not the mana by itself but the way some used them as a cheap mean to limit players, they had to sit to regenerate and were op when they could cast, it was an other mean to achieve balance, but not a good mean imo. The way Anet did that is much better i think, it doesn't limit you that much and isn't as boring.
CoX comes to mind. Same idea, it used cooldowns to balance skill use, instead of any sort of resource pool. No reason a fantasy MMO can't do the same thing, other than that's not how it was done in what, EQ? UO? Ultima I?
Funny how long it takes to break away from conventions. Not that there's anything wrong with using a mana system. It's just wrong for everyone to do it, just because that's how it's done by everyone else.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Ye they brought back a lot of the old mmo mechanisms in the game and i'm very happy with it because those were just much better back then, and it gave me the sensation this game fit me like a glove even though it is completly new.

Instead, cooldown on spells compensates for no mana.
But yeah. No more mana burn, no more drinking and all that shit
Mana is fine as long as no Potions involved.
Spamming potions is just stupid.
I prefer the traditional cooldown system however
I consider global-cooldown a bad invention.

Mana is just another timer system to prevent frequent use of certain abilities.
That generates rotations and filler skills.
It also slows you down, one way or the other.
GW2 replaces that with a greater focus on positional gameplay and the dodge resource.
Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders
