SWTOR was going to fail... i dunno why the community failed to see that one coming...

As far as I remember, when they released the third swtor trailer... Someone said that even if swtor fails, we are going to have some good cinematics at least...

    and...

A Yogcast video about Rift... They mock SWTOR in a very subtle manner...

Its kinda sad that I forgot where the info is, so i have to start diggin once again the whole internet lol!...

Anyway... I heard that Anet pretty much stop selling the game for a whole week... What the norse happened there... i have no idea at all...

Guild Wars 2 base their entire revenue on box sales, the cash shop was just a bonus.

SWTOR, because of the cost of it's production and huge staff, base a significant portion of their revenue on sales + subscription.

    There in lies the problem.

There is an official number of sales for GW2 now? The only thing I heard was 1 million presales.

And funny enough was Wows initial sale less than 1 million, 750K in 3 months to be exact.

But the reason that TOR is failing is because it went F2P faster than any other P2P game ever. Less than 8 months after launch they announced it and that is a unbeatable record.

EA would never have done that unless they were desperate, they might have launched it as F2P but changing the payment model is a lot of work and nothing you do just for the heck of it.

GW2, Tera, and TSW did fine.  They didn't have the advertising power and IP name backing them up.  Star Wars is huge.  That IP goes beyond games, and into books, comics, figures, etc..

What is even the point of bringing up this metric any ways?

SWTOR is a game that has a very large audience from non-mmo and mmo matkets that anticipated playing it. They came with a pre-baked market for their game.

Tera, TSW, and even GW2 did not have one of the worlds largest franchises selling their boxes.

Go figure they would have less initial sales.

This says absolutely nothing about the quality of the game or it's eventual longevity.

Hey loke. They just announced officially that GW2 hit 2 mil sales (even with digital being closed down for awhile). So thats why all the haters came out today.

SWTOR lost 80% of its playerbase. 100 000 - 200 000 is playing SWTOR now. Above 1 million is playing GW2 and the sales of boxes is increasing. GW2 won't lose 80% of its playerbase, never.  If you play once a month, you are considered an active player.

Vanguard sold a heck of a lot of boxes at release, as well. EVE Online sold...  50k?

Release sales are a measure of marketing success. Retention is a measure of the game's success. You've been playing MMOs and reading these forums for at least 6 years now and you couldn't figure that out?

Did I miss the news where SW:TOR stopped digital sales in their first week?

What does the OP consider "launch"? Launch Day? Launch Week? Launch Month?

Since GW2 launched less than 3 weeks ago, is the OP using figures (what figures , by the way) from SW:TOR's first 3 weeks?

Is this supposed to be some measure of which game is better? Different genres (space vs fantasy), different business models (P2P vs B2P), different games.

I guess when all is said and done, who really cares? Both games did very well.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

What are you  talking about ?

    ~ TOR - 600.000 pre-orders while GW2 - 1.000.000 pre-orders

~ TOR - who knows how many played from 600.000, GW2 - 400.000 players at the same time AND RISING

~ TOR never reached 2mln subscribers and you MUST subscibe in order to play. Last number they shared was 1.7mln.

~ GW2 is more popular than TOR right now, much more popular. Even when TOR have star wars, ea and bioware behind it back.

~ AngryJoe in his review gave GW2 10/10 calling game LEGENDARY while he never could even get into TOR and in the end he never review it.

~ Metacritic user score of TOR is 5.7 while GW2 have 8.4, even critic score of GW2 is higher.

~ from XFIRE and similar systems that monitor player activities we learned that GW2 is most played game in western world (I don't know about east).

~ GW2 is top seller in 10 European countries.

~ Except some problems with login server and trade post down for first few days because of too many people - we all could get into game and play without problems. Overflow system is a good. I could not get into my server in TOR for first week and it ask me to wait few hours in queue to play even when I had hour or less.

Please tell me - at what point GW2 is less successful than SWTOR ?

Ah, sorry, missed that. Morning here.

But yes, GW2 took 2 weeks longer that TOR to reach 2 million sales, the horror. If only the game did as well as TOR....

Anyways, Initial sales does not count for squat, EQ2 sold well the first week and everyone expected it to be the next EQ. Vanguard sold rather fine as well. And WAR & AoC sold record numbers for the time, both more than Wow.

GW1 didnt sell that well the first week, yet it have sold 4,5 million accounts or 8 million boxes whatever you prefer. TOR will never sell that much. Ever.

Now, TOR is not a bad game and I am not trying to troll it, but while it sold initially well it is in huge problems now and seriously need to be revamped to be more social.

I feel your pain man, it must be hard to be one of the last eleven people still playing a game that just might the biggest failure in MMO history.

GW2 development costs were propably a whole lot less than that of SWTOR, but I'm sure you thought of that when you decided to create this thread full of holes.

I played SWTOR for 7 months. I supported, I defended, I was patient. I was there for the reasonably solid release. I was there for several of the beta's. I was there when the community began to wonder why bugs, reported months before release, were still there at GoLive. I was there when "The Pimple On the Ass of Gaming" (Georg Zoeller) made his infamous "teams of stun locking operatives will make people quit the game" statement and the even more idiotic "what kinda of Huttball matches are you guys playing where you never leave combat and are able to re-stealth?" comment.

It was a reasonably good game that, in context of the IP, the producer and the amount of time/money/effort put into it, was a COLOSSAL FAILURE in regards to what *WE* got. The instant they announced the F2P transition, I tapped out.

GuildWars2 had a similarly solid release. There WERE/ARE bugs. There remains the account hacking/login servers down crap that they desperately need to fix. The game is very, very solid. Unlike SWTOR it is my opinion (and I'm not alone on this) that ArenaNet was able to deliver on most of it's promises. Certainly more so than BW did with SWTOR.

Check my posting history. I played and defended SWTOR. For you to use it as a benchmark for "success" is an indication that you are either a troll or an idiot.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say "probably both". So trot yourself back over to the SWTOR forums. I'm pretty sure the circle-jerk misses it's team captain.

That is because SWTOR was bought by many people for the sole reason, that Star Wars was written on it. If you'd write "Star Wars" on solar submarines, they'd also sell well.

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

And TOR cost 3X more to make and market, almost 4X.... than GW2

And then lost 80%-90% of its playerbase to the present.

And is going F2P, and cost a bunch of execs their jobs and went a long way to sinking the stock price of the company that made it.

In what way is TOR not a failure?

For the same money, as TOR, Anet could have made GW2, GW3, and GW4, and not a fully voice acted, POS wow clone.

“What an incredible smell you've discovered!”

    GW2, 3 weeks 2 million+ sales :http://www.shacknews.com/article/75736/guild-wars-2-sales-pass-2-million-copies

    SWTOR, 6 weeks 2 million+ sales: http://www.vgchartz.com/game/31584/star-wars-the-old-republic/Global/

Not that this particular epeen measuring is particularly constructive.

    Except that it didnt.

And, how funny is that, the more you pump up the numbers the worse it looks:

    2.3m - 2m people hated the game

    2.7m - 2.4m people hated the game

    5m? - 4.7m hated the game

    Yup, just astonishing rofl

Its the biggest failure in MMO history, being financially or player wise, more people quit SWTOR in first 1-6 months than lot of games ever had combined, there has to be a medal for that lol, its a record that will be VERY TOUGH to break :)

SWTOR will forever be a game with bad gameplay mechanics (unless they rebuild it) while GW2, like WoW, has good gameplay mechanics.

    SWTOR was destined to fail.

Uhm, while OPs numbers are based on numbers saying it took GW2 1 1/2  weeks longer to reach 2 million sold boxes and making a big deal out of that (comparing it with TSWs 200K sold in the same time) your numbers seems suspicious as well.

I never seen an actual number on how much TOR cost, just $120M+ and neither have I seen GW2s cost.

So give us some official links please.

    This thread is sad.

If you purposely tried to make a huge disappointment you would have trouble accomplishing what Bioware has, and is still, shoveling. It's fucking embarrassing at this point. Reminds me of this sketch.

Anyone want to mention here that GW2 passed 2 million. Not only that but they did so even after stopping all sales of the game for like a week.

SWTOR is very successful.  We are changing payment models in order to share our wonderful game with more people.  Our AI programmers have developed programs to generate content without the need of programmers or artists.  We have provided generous bonuses to all employees of Bioware and have let them find positions with companies that are not able to provide machine generated content.  We have also let our wonderful community relations staff find other positions as we now generate bug free content and rarely receive customer service calls.

These threads get more ridiculous every day.  GW2 has nothing to do with SWTOR.
