Social "Games" / Virtual Worlds

potacopotaco Member Posts: 82

Are there any big social games these days? Second Life's popularity seems to have peaked quite a few years ago and most of the other social aspects in games have been replaced by Facebook, Twitter, and the like. Wondering if there are any others worth checking out? Are any more "mature" than others? I'm not looking for anything explicit or nasty, but I'd rather not be surrounded by whiny pre-teens (I know, I know... I shouldn't play MMOs then).

- Second Life

- There

- IMVU

Hmmmmm- I THINK I knopw what you are looking for.

I would look into persistant world games that are NOT MMOS. Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 have some fantastic private servers with custom maps, Graphics, Housing etc. These can be very social based (some have very little combat even) , RP based and even "Adult" based.

You will need to get the game, and then search out a server which has what you are looking for. I have no recomendations but back in the day had a real blast on a private server- We were all involved in some fantastic "high level" intrigue and there was mystery, a good story and a M team who acted as a Dungeon Master as we played. Was cool stuff.

Other than that... I think you are out of luck =/

EDIT: MODS please dont delete for discussing "private servers"- These are PART OF THE GAME. The game was made to host your own server , add graphix, script and mod it to your liking and host a persistant server.

    Thanks for the replies.

    - Regarding NWN and NWN2... I am not really familiar with the server structure. I always assumed each server was a relatively small, player-run operation (i.e. a core group of players co-oping it up). I won't rule it out, but I think I would be looking for something a little more "massive" in scope. It seems like I'd be able to fulfill something similar by finding a good guild in an existing game.

    - Regarding ATITD... I haven't played much, but from the times I've tried, the game has seemed like a ghosttown. I love the concept, but without a strong playerbase, it seems to fall flat.

    - Regarding Wurm... I actually did like this game, and it did have some strong social interaction aspects at times (more along the lines of working together than simple communications). What turned me off was that it ended up feeling like more of a job than a game. I enjoy wanting to log in, not feeling like I have to log in.

    - Regarding Salem... I've played the beta a bit (as well as Haven & Hearth). I love the colonial feel, but it shares some of the same drawbacks that I listed above for Wurm. I am looking forward to the actual launch, thoug (it's just hard for me to spend a lot of time on a beta that will be wiped).

    - Regarding Project Entropia... This is another one I generally like the concept of. Unfortunately, I haven't seen a lot of real social interactions (besides shooting the breeze occasionally while gathering sweat). I also have a love/hate relationship with the "real" economy. I know I will be prevented from truly progressing to the "top" of the game not only due to my lack of funds, but the constant nagging feeling that everything I do in-game costs real money. Even if I earn 1000 PED in-game, instead of spending it on some upgraded weapon or tool, I would always be tempted to just cash out.

I don't mean to sound like a downer, and I definitely don't mean to imply that any I've listed are free from issues (far from it). I appreciate the replies so far and am looking forward for more.

LOL- Yeah you pretty much summed up my feelings as well on those titles.

NWN servers are the closet I have found and as you rightfully say- These are small, player run affairs and certainly not massive in scope. Which is really too bad...

I think you are in the same boat as many of us here, spinning our wheels and waiting for a "World" to play around in. The current "sandbox" offerings are severly flawed and very PVP centric with very little "sand" and often far too small to really work as intended.

Repopulation is a game which could be what we are seeking. But although I am wishful I am not hopeful...

Entropia Universe is more of an online casino than a virtual world.
